The Bonds Between Us

Lam Faith Bivianne

Nguyen Clapper Munguia

The bond that link your true

family is not one of blood, but
of respect and joy in each
others life. - Unknown
In The Bonds Between Us..
Through all the texts, we find that not only the
human race, but animals and even objects can help us
form bonds. We learn this by forming the slightest
connection of sympathy towards one another. As a
society, humans may look and act different but just
being part of the race is already a bond. Many animals
follow what others of the same kind do, such as birds
flying in the same direction. And of course, objects as
well play a very important role in bonds due to the
feeling of a flashback of sorts. There are more things in
common than many think, and shows the many bonds
between us.
When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine
By Jhumpa Lahiri

In the short story When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine by Jhumpa

Lahiri, it shows how people can bond together by having the same
nationality and background. The author states, In the search of compatriots,
they used to trail their fingers, at the start new semester, through the
columns of the university, directory, circling surnames familiar (Lahiri 104).
This quote describes how the characters bond with having the same
nationality/background. The passage also shows how people can connect
with their nationality/ background and bond close with each other. The
quote is related to the theme The Bond Between Us because it shows
nationality showing who they are and are alike between each other. As a
result, people can connect with nationality because it connects who they
are with them.
And of Clay We Are Created
By Isabel Allende
In the short story And of Clay We Are Created by
Isabel Allende, it supports the idea of people connected
with their own tragedy. The author states, He was
Azucena; he was buried in the clayed mud; his terror was
not the distant emotion of an almost forgotten childhood,
it was a claw sunk in his throat. (48). This quote
describes that Rolf understands how Azucena feels
because they have the same tragedy and he feels he was
her. This quote is related to the theme The bonds
between us because it shows the readers that Rolf tries
to help Azucena to get out of the mud because they have
the same tragedy which is buried in fear and hopeless. As
the result, the readers learned that people can connect
with others by their own tragedy.
Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect
By Frans de Waal
The science article, Monkey See, Monkey Do,
Monkey Connect, by Frans de Waal, examines how
animals and humans are able to form bonds between
each other. In the text, Waal states, It began much more
simply, with the synchronization of bodies: running when
others run, laughing when others laugh, crying when
others cry, yawning when others yawn (Waal 124). This
explains how people are easily able to bond through
synchronization with others. The passage shows how
both animals and humans are able to connect through
simple actions such as copying the other. In conclusion,
the article supports how bonds are formed by humans
and many other animals through easy tasks.
With Friends Like These
By Dorothy Rowe

In the information text, With Friends Like These By

Dorothy Rowe, it shows how people bond over friendship. The
author states, We need to find friends whose individual world is
somewhat similar to our own, so that we are able to communicate
with one another (143). This quote describes how people can
bond with other people to come close to other such as friends
and families. The text relates to the theme, The Bonds
Between Us because it shows how people can bond with similar
mindsets and can create friendship. In conclusion, people are able
to connection to one another due to similar views on the world.
At Dusk
By Natasha Trethewey
In the poem, At Dusk by Natasha Trethewey,
addresses how people are also able to form bonds
non-directly. The text states, ...I too might lift my voice,
sure of someone out there, send it over the lines stitching
here to there, certain the sounds I make are enough to call
someone home (Trethewey 25). The line describes how
the characters form a bond over loneliness because they
think the sounds they make are enough to call someone
home. However, the passage displays how the characters
never talk to each other throughout the text, but form a
bond over their feeling of loneliness. In conclusion, the
poem shows how people can bond non-directly over a
feeling.
Connections to the world

One of the major conflicts that can prevent people

from bonding with each other is racism. Judging
someone by color can cause harm to bonds because one
might feel out of place because of their skin color.
Racism is everywhere around the globe, however there
are ways to stop it. For example, when you look at a
person, you do not need to judge them based on skin
color, but rather who they are as a person based on
their personality. This is related to the theme because
we are all bonded through being human no matter skin
color, gender, or age.
