Observation Date: 6/15/17

Observation Time: 4:00 PM

Subject/Grade Level: Pre-Algebra 1/ 8th Grade

School Observed: Chisholm Trail Middle School

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if

known, for example, TEKS 111.39. Algebra I, Adopted 2012 (One Credit).

11(B) simplify numeric and algebraic expressions using the laws of exponents, including integral

and rational exponents.

Objectives: Students will be able to simplify expressions involving zero and negative exponents.

Students will be able to multiply powers with the same base.

Students will be able to raise a power to a power and raise a product to a power.

Students will identify the common errors and misconceptions on the paper and make corrections.
2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

She had a student read the objectives to the class. After saying thank you, the students she said

there no tutoring today and she introduced the warming up to the class. She put a quiz taken by

two different students and asked the student to analyze their paper and find their errors and

misconceptions and try to fix them.

After completing all questions with students, she gave them a homework; she writes a letter to

the parents of these two students by asking them how to start and what to write. They gave some

example and she closed the lesson.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Overhead projector, whiteboard, powerpoint, timer, markers, notebook

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry,

discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,

integration of technology, creative questioning, etc)

The teacher used discovery learning by letting them find the answers, she also used cooperative

by grouping and pairing them up. She used small group and the whole class discussion.

Questions and answer were another way she was randomly assigning a student to explain the

answer. She was also helping the groups by involving into their discussion and helping them to

move.
5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-

ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

This class was not about a new topic, it was a reviewing or going over a quiz. Since reviewed the

taken quiz it was a formal and formative assessment. She was also using the oral assessment by

asking them a question and evaluating the answers. There was feedback; the teacher was giving

the immediate feedback to them. The student will write a feedback letter to the parents as well.

6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?

(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)

The teacher was mostly using a student-centered method more than any other methods. She was

assisting the student to find the answer, and to explain them to the classes.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management

techniques used?

What I saw in this class was all about good behaviors and very good participation. Overall, the

class was not boring, and it was very interactive. Students were engaged in class very well. She

did not warn anyone for any misbehaving. Students were more self-disciplined and they follow

directions very well. The teacher did not sit down at all, she was walking around asking

questions, assisting the student and was keeping them active on the task.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-

task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct

them or get them back on task?

The teacher was always on the task and she was keeping student active on the as well. The

teacher was approaching to the student group and asking them questions about the assignment.

She was listening for their responses and she was doing this for class. She also called student

with their name loudly to answer the questions. Students had a tendency to raise their hands and

answer the questions as well.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal

communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

The teacher was using her body language very well and she was always keeping eye contact with

a student. The teacher was mobilized in class for the whole period. She asking them questions

and listening for their response e she was also taking their questions and explaining them by

looking at their face.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,

diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

There were about 20 students in the class; they were almost half-male-half-female students.

What I saw that, even if most of them were participating actively in the class, some of them were

just sitting and watching the class. I like the class participations but the teacher should have

noticed those who never participated and asked those questions too. Most of the student were

white, there some African-American students as well.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is

ineffective in keeping students engaged?

The teacher asked a student to read the objectives, which is effective, and she started with a

warming up. This warming up was a taken quiz by two homeschool students, which took their
attention. The teacher was walking, moving around, and observing students progress and was

giving them directions bout their progress. She was focusing on the student responses and she

was showing them that their responses are important for them. Even if the class was interactive,

the warming up took the whole class. She said it warming up but then it changed to a discussion

until the end of the class.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your

classroom?

I like note-taking strategies from the teacher, she was asking them to answer the questions on the

paper, she was asking them to give the feedback to the students parents as well, and she was

checking their progress as well. Discussion strategies were the other one, which I like most. She

kept her student very active with this method. For this reason, the class was very interactive

calls.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would

like to apply in your classroom?

The first important classroom management strategy is all about objectives. She let a student read

the objectives to the class and then she explained to the class the objectives so the class learned

what to do today. The second strategy is about a discussion she asking them and let them how to

find and fix the errors. Using discussion method and supporting own idea is very crucial for

students.
