Lesson Idea Name: Characteristics of functions

Content Area: Algebra

Grade Level(s): 9th grade
Content Standard Addressed: MM1A1
MM1A1. Students will explore and interpret the characteristics of functions, using graphs, tables, and simple algebraic
techniques.
a. Represent functions using function notation.
b. Graph the basic functions f(x) = x(n), where n = 1 to 3, f(x) = x, f(x) = |x|, and f(x) = 1/x.
c. Graph transformations of basic functions including vertical shifts, stretches, and shrinks, as well as reflections across the x-
and y-axes.
d. Investigate and explain the characteristics of a function: domain, range, zeros, intercepts, intervals of increase and decrease,
maximum and minimum values, and end behavior.
e. Relate to a given context the characteristics of a function, and use graphs and tables to investigate its behavior.
f. Recognize sequences as functions with domains that are whole numbers.
g. Explore rates of change, comparing constant rates of change (i.e., slope) versus variable rates of change. Compare rates of
change of linear, quadratic, square root, and other function families.
h. Determine graphically and algebraically whether a function has symmetry and whether it is even, odd, or neither.
i. Understand that any equation in x can be interpreted as the equation f(x) = g(x), and interpret the solutions of the equation as
the x-value(s) of the intersection point(s) of the graphs of y = f(x) and y = g(x).

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner

Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing,
achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals,
informed by the learning sciences. Students:
a.
articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies
leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning
process itself to improve learning outcomes.
b.
build networks and customize their learning environments in ways
that support the learning process.
c.
use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their
practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
d.
understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations,
demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current
technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore
emerging technologies.

Lesson idea implementation:

After a quick review about functions. Students will explore and interpret the characteristics of a
functions using Excel to create their own spreadsheet and graph the given basic functions.
They will use tables and graphs to investigate its behavior. They will compare rates of change of
linear, quadratic, square root.
After finishing this activities students will have a better understanding of the proprieties of basic
Functions: Linear, Quadratic, and Square root. They will be able to determine the domain of a
function (the set of inputs for the function), The range (The et of output), and the idea of function
transformations (vertical and horizontal shift).
I will challenge my students to look for the behavior and the transformation of more complicated
function (rational and polynomial) in this part of the lesson they will work with partners. In order to
provide a feedback and assessed to my students I will ask them to complete an exit ticket (Determine
the behavior of the function f(x) = 3(x-2)^2)
