Descriptionofpyriteandthephenomenon

Pyriteisamineralsulfur(FeS2)foundatlowlevelsinthesedimentaryrocks(limestoneandclay)usedtomake
crushedstonebackfill.Inthepresenceofcombinedwaterandoxygen,pyriteoxidizesandproducessulfuric
acid.Sulfuricacidreactswithcalciumcarbonatecontentinthecrushedstoneandcementinconcreteproducts.
Thischemicalreaction(sulfation)gypsumproductwhosecrystallizationcausesswellingofthestoneand
concrete.Sulfationhastwoadverseeffectsontheconcreteslababove.

Thefirsteffectistheswellingofpyriticgranularfillunderslabsofconcreteslabsandraisestheinterior
partitionsthataresupported.Damagemaythenbecausedtothefloors,walls,roofsandevenfloorslocated
abovethewallsthatrise.Thethickerfillisgreatswellingismoreimportant.Thatiswhytheproblemappears
moreinresidentialgarages,becauseherethethicknessBackfilloftenreaches1meterthick,whereasunderthe
slabsofthebasementthereisusuallyonly10to20cmthick.

Thesecondeffect,theswellingoftheconcreteslabisresponsibleforthemostdramaticupheavals(10cm).
Whensulfuricacidcomesincontactwiththeundersideoftheconcreteslab,theconcreteswellsand
disintegratesbysulfation.Itshouldbenotedthatthepresenceofpolyethylenevaporbarrierinstalledunderthe
concreteslabsholdingsulfuricacidandvirtuallyeliminatestheproblemofsulfationofconcrete,butdespitethe
recommendationsofarchitects,layingundertheslabsofpolyethylenedoeswasnotcommonpracticeuntilthe
2000s.Intheabsenceofavaporbarrier,especiallysulfationdisintegratesunderneaththeslabandtheproblems
donotoccuroftenas10or20yearsafterconstruction.Bycons,ifvapororrugisplacedontheconcreteslab,
theentirethicknessoftheslabwhichundergoessulfationandtheproblemcanoccurmorequickly.Theswelling
oftheconcreteslabtendstoexpandbothhorizontallyandvertically.Thehorizontalexpansionoftheslabbeing
retainedbythefoundationwalls,itistowardsthecenterofthebuildingthatuprisingsoccur,leavingavoid
beneaththeslabverycharacteristicofcracksformingandraisedinformsofstarsorcrosses.

Theoretically,thesulfuricacidcouldalsoaffectthefootingsunderthefoundationofthebasementwallsand
foundationsforgarages,butthishasnotyetbeenidentified.Pyriticbackfilldoesnotappear,either,cause
damagetosidewalks,drivewaysandotherexteriorworkcar.

Pyriticbackfillcanbequarriedstonewhichcontainspyrite,excavationoflargepublicworks(aqueducts,
tunnels,subways,etc.).Orminetailingsfrommineralseparation.IntheMontrealarea,thefillappearstobe
primarilyfrompyriticshales(shale)andpelitesofthesouthshoreofSt.Lawrence.
