NORTH VS THE SOUTH!

Vietnam in terror, War strikes and Over 1 million wounded
By Rajneel Lal 91
The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist rule
of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as the Viet Cong, against South
Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The war began in 1954 (though
conflict in the region stretched back to the mid-1940s), after the rise to power of Ho
Chi Minh and his communist Viet Minh party in North Vietnam, and continued
against the backdrop of an intense Cold War between two global superpowers: the
United States and the Soviet Union.

More than 3 million people (including 58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam
War; more than half were Vietnamese civilians. By 1969, at the peak of U.S.
involvement in the war, more than
500,000 U.S. military personnel were
involved in the Vietnam conflict.

United States led to bitter divisions
among Americans, both before and
after President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973. In
1975, communist forces seized control of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War, and
the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year.
Among South Vietnams other allies, Australia had over 400 killed and 2,400
wounded; New Zealand, over 80 KIA ; Republic of Korea, 4,400 KIA; and Thailand
350 killed.

Vietnam has a long history of being ruled by foreign powers, and this led much Vietnamese to see the United States
involvement in their country as neo-colonialism. The Vietnam War has now become the Second Indochina War, 19541973.
Usually, it refers to the period when the United States and other members of the SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization)
joined the forces of the Republic of South Vietnam in fight for communist forces comprised of South Vietnamese irregular
fighting and regular-force units, generally known as Viet Cong (VC), and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). The war took
place in locations like South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

We have interview Ms. Chi about the conflicts in Vietnam and how she feels after the death of her husband. I dont know what
to say, my husband left me and now I am alone she said. She also said that she sent letter everyday to her husband to read.
I have seen lot of men and women die and I feel sad but there is nothing I could possibly do. She added.

I had a interview with Anh, who was in the war. This is what he had to say. the war was horrible, I seen my best friends die,
right in front of my eyes. I was terrified, gun shots everywhere and I couldnt escape. I was dripping tears, the blood never
stopped dripping from my head and my arms. It was scary.

An horrific incident seeing everyday people lives changed from that event was heart-breaking and tearful. The North
Vietnamese continued to insist on complete U.S. withdrawal as a condition of peace, however, and the next few years would
bring even more massacre, including the horrifying revelation that U.S. soldiers had massacred more than 400 unarmed
civilians in the village of My Lai in March 1968.
