Welcome to Western Arts Theatre Inc. Were so excited to stage Into the Woods for our
upcoming production, and just as excited to have you be a part of it. Below youll find all the
information youll need to prepare for your audition. This pack is designed to make the
process as efficient as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at

The Show
Into the Woods, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, has
been an audience favourite for decades.

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales,
exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This is all tied together by
a story involving a childless baker and his wife, and their quest to begin a family, their
interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other
storybook characters during their journey.

It also examines the moral consequences of having your wish granted, and what happens
after happily ever after.

Sunday, June 25th 1:00pm - 2:30pm Callbacks

Callbacks will take place after the dance auditions from 1pm; you will be notified if you are
required for a callback after preliminary auditions finish on Saturday. Material will be
emailed to you to prepare for your callback.

Auditions on Monday, Thursday and Saturday will take place at:

Essendon Baptist Community Church, 134 Buckley St Essendon
You will be notified at the audition if you are required to attend the dance audition.

Solo Vocal Audition

Bookings for auditions can be made through the trybooking link on the Western Arts
Theatre Facebook page.
Please print out and turn in the attached Audition Form when you arrive for your audition.
Juniors under the age of 18 will require the signature of a parent/guardian on their Audition
Form.
Please arrive 10 minutes before your audition time to be fully prepared, have audition forms
filled out and have your casting photo taken.

Vocal Auditions
All songs should be in the style of the show. A piano accompanist will be provided. Please
prepare the best sections of the song, ie. If there are three verses in the song, please
prepare just one verse, the chorus and bridge.

During the audition there will be a vocal range check and auditionees may be asked to
repeat a short phrase.

Please ensure that your Sheet Music:

- Is in the correct key
- Has any cuts/alterations clearly marked
- Is printed and in a display folder

Please DO NOT:
- Staple the pages
- Provide the pdf on your phone or tablet

Please prepare two contrasting songs in a style of the show. We may choose to only hear
one song, or both, or a part thereof.

You may be asked to read dialogue for the role you are auditioning for, or for a role the
creative team feel you may suit. Script excerpts will be available when you arrive, and you
may read through them before being called in.

Dance Audition

Please wear comfortable clothing thats easy to move in. Other things that would be helpful
to bring include appropriate footwear (no bare-feet please), a water bottle, and a small
towel if you think you might need it.

The dance call will be a fun and supportive environment even for the least confident
dancers, and everyone will be encouraged to smile and give it a go!

Dont be nervous. Every one of us on the audition panel has stood before an audition panel
before and knows how you feel. Just do your best and have fun!

The Narrator 18+ Baritone/Mezzo-Soprano. Male or female.

The Baker 20+ Baritone. Headstrong but insecure.

Bakers Wife 20+ Mezzo-Soprano. Determined and optimistic.

The Witch 18+ Mezzo-Soprano. Self-serving and sarcastic.

Cinderella 20+ Soprano. Kind and nave. A survivor.

Jack 16 22 Tenor. Impulsive, but inexperienced.

Little Red 14 20 Mezzo-Soprano. Deceptively innocent and coy.

Rapunzel 16+ Soprano. Innocent and emotionally exhausted.

Cinderellas Prince 22+ Baritone. Vain, charming, but never sincere.

Rapunzels Prince 22+ Baritone. Vain, charming, but occasionally sincere.

Jacks Mother 30+ Soprano. Hard-working, anxious, with a big heart.

Cinderellas Stepmother 30+ Mezzo-Soprano. Vain, greedy and black hearted.

Lucinda 20+ Mezzo-Soprano. Vain, greedy and black hearted.

Florinda 20+ Mezzo-Soprano. Vain, greedy and black hearted.

Royal Steward 18+ Baritone/Tenor. Bureaucratic and self-important.

Mysterious Man 40+ Baritone. Mischievous but solemn.

The Wolf 22+ Baritone. Hungry and deceptive.

Cinderellas Father 30+ Baritone/Tenor. Drunk and dismissive. Aloof.

Cinderellas Mother 30+ Soprano. Ethereal and all-wise.

Granny 40+ Mezzo-Soprano. Surly and brash. Big comedy role.

Giant (voice) 18+ Spoken. Female. Must have a booming presence.

Milky White 16+ No dialogue. Very physical role. Cow-reography.

*There will also be some adult male, female and junior ensemble roles.*

Casting Announcements
Cast offers will be made on the evening of callbacks, Sunday the 25th of June, via phone.
Email notifications will be emailed out to all auditionees after final casting is confirmed
which must be confirmed in writing as soon as possible. Casting will be announced on
Saturday July 1st to coincide with a preview performance at TheatrePeople Sings.
Important Dates
Please notify us of any unavailabilities on your audition form. If not notified, we expect you
to be available for all of the following dates unless in the case of an emergency or upon
negotiation with the Production Team.

Special Rehearsal: Thursday the 29th of June at 7:30pm for the Princes.
Cast Announcement/Preview: Saturday the 1st of July at 8pm at TheatrePeople Sings.
First Rehearsal/Meet & Greet: Monday the 3rd of June at 7:30pm.
Intensive Rehearsal Weekend: 26th and 27th of August between 10am and 5pm
Other rehearsals: Starting the 3rd of July, rehearsals will be held in Essendon every Monday
and Thursday evening from 7:30pm to 10:30pm and on Sundays from 12:00pm until
5:00pm.

Not all cast will be required at all rehearsals. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be provided
with at least 2 weeks notice in all cases.

*Please note: All rehearsals will be closed rehearsals.*

Cast Fees and Membership

All cast members are expected to pay a Cast Fee of $70 to help cover the costs of
participation in the show. Additionally, all cast must have an active membership with
Western Arts Theatre, which costs $30 for adults.
The Cast Fee and Membership are due at the first rehearsal.
Additionally, WAT will provide all cast members with rental material containing the script
and the music for the show if required. If these are damaged or lost, the cast member is also
responsible for covering that cost.

Fundraising and Promotion

Cast members may be asked to participate in fundraising and promotion for the show.
These may include performing at a fundraising event, distributing promotional material,
appearing on broadcast radio programs, participating in photo-shoots and/or promotional
performances at public venues. Availability will be considered once these events are
secured.
