Building Construction Treasure Hunt Assignment

With Rubric
Course Objectives:
Classify major types of building construction in accordance with local/model building
codes
Explain the different loads and stresses that are placed on a building and their
interrelationships.
Identify the function of each principle structural component in typical building design
Project Description:
Using the Mittendorf & Dodson text as a reference, as well as other available resources, you
and your group are to go out in the community and find one example of each of the five types of
building construction. You are to identify the building construction type, era of the building,
provide a detailed description of the exterior features including possible hazards
to firefighters and emergency responders, and likely interior features and layout based on
knowledge gained from this class and life experience. You are also required to photograph the
building you are describing as well as any unique features that may be of interest. After you
have gathered the required information for all five of your examples, you will arrange the
information in an appropriate format (PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides, etc.) and present your
findings to the class as if you were conducting a training session for your fire department.
Think about what you would want to know about these specific buildings if you were the one
receiving the training. What about these building would either help or hinder fire department
operations? What are some specific things about the type of construction?
Please, no trespassing onto private property while completing this assignment.
