The role of the coach

In the contemporary life, media often shows the results of the

competition and less concerning about how and what kind of procedure they

were taken. It often shows gratitude towards the winning side but almost no

sympathy on the losing side, degrading their loss even further. Obviously,

everyone`s objective is to win. Nevertheless, there are few individual or

teams that are willing to give all of their blood, tears, sweat to earn the trophy.

This is why there is a coach as a guidance. The right mentality of a coach can

take athletes or teams to the next level. There is more to coaching than just

ordinary concept of teaching. The coaches need to give precise advice

players to improve their performance. The coaches, figuring out role of each

players, utilize to best of his or her ability for the team. Coaches need to be
open trying new things. Primarily, coaches need to give motivation to each

players.

To begin with, coaching consist of giving clear instructions in the

practice to form unity within the team. In Japan, baseball is considered as

one of the biggest sports. Almost every child`s dream is to go to Koshien(the

National high school baseball competition). This deep fulfillment of dream

comes across their mind from their childhood into adolescence. In order to

meet their demand, coach has an important role to the players. The coach by

the name of Kawanami, former Yakuroto player for Yakuruto Swallows,

describes simple way to play catch ball to enhance their performance. The

catch ball is not just a matter of throwing a ball at each other. It is important

to create continuous movement between the players. This natural movement

naturally create dance. In other words, it is important to create chemistry

between the players to form the harmony.

Coaching, in general terms, can be viewed as someone that gives

instructions. However, coaches role is comprised of more than just giving

principles. The significant part of coaching is asking the right questions to

allow players to think rather then providing them with answers. For example,

Tennis coach asked the ski coach to teach his players. If coaches gave the

purpose and answers, then players often do not contemplate about why this

practice is suitable for them. Instead, coach asked the specific questions such

as what is the purpose of such a practice, what is the motive for doing

specific task. By asking these questions make tennis players think and know

exactly why they need to improve. This approach is effective because this

could not only encourage them to work harder but also can adjust to

individual skill.

Coaches serve to build the good relation in the team. The New

Zealand legendary rugby player named John became a head coach for the

University in Japan. The matter of subordination is deeply embedded in

Japan. The young people have to approach older player with the respectful

manner particularly in sports and corporation. John did not like such a matter

because he believed that subordination will bring about difficult relationship

in the team. This could hinder the talent of an individual. He, regardless of

their age differences, asked the captain treat his teammates as same level.

This brought improvement in the atmosphere and the chemistry of the team.

The relationship of the team improved dramatically.

In addition, coaches have to bring the team together and make right

decision. The coach by the name of Phill Jackson is one of the best coaches

in the professional basketball. He led Chicago Bulls to six championships.

Phill`s vision of the game begun to unfold in christen family where he was

taught righteousness. However, he could not quite grasp the concept of

christen. Then, he turned to Zen Buddhism, learning to become more aware

of what is happening at the moment. His philosophy principle of self lessens

and compassion was applied to the teams he coached. It may be true that

people and media like to make assumption on whether the team they are

cheering for is going to win or lose. This, even in the professional sports,

could trigger the players to get carried away in the moment and losing their

focus of the game. Phill`s concept intrigues the idea of enjoying in the every
moment without letting your feeling take over. To implement this task, he

told everyone on the team to mediate. It was effective way for the team to

concentrate in the moment. Therefore, by raising the teams consciousness,

can raise the performance.

In conclusion, it is clear that coaching is subtle process. It require

leadership skills, orchestrate the unity of the team, change the teams

atmosphere, understand psychology of the players and most importantly of

all, need to give players motivation. Great coaches direct players to the right

path to success.

As Albert Einstein eloquently described his rule of work one: out of clutter,
find simplicity. Two: From discord, find harmony. Three: In the middle of
difficulty lies opportunity.
