1. Technical description
Elastic couplings reduce intermittent short period torsional shocks, by briefly storing elastically part of this shock energy. Any degree of uneven
movement and load transference is consequently reduced. Elastic couplings restrain body resonance, and therefore contribute to noise reduction.
The elastic SPIDEX-coupling transmits the torque safe against break-down. The convex generated profiled tooth crown allows compensation of
radial and angular displacements of the two connected shafts. It consists of a thermoplastic Polyurethane elastomer, which is exclusively pressure
loaded and designed for high abrasion resistance and elasticity, and to have good damping characteristics, and to be resistant to oils, greases,
many solvents, atmospheric effects and ozone, as well as good resistance to hydrolysis in tropical conditions.

The operating temperatures are between - 40 and + 100C. Short max. temperatures up to + 120C are admissible.

The standard hardness of the spider is 92 Shore A. For low torques a spider of 80 Shore A, can be used and for higher torques a spider of 95 to
98 Shore A, can be used. From figures 1 and 2, it can be seen that the convex rim of the tooth takes higher proportion of deformation-energy, the
more deformation increases. The value of the torsional stiffness CT of the tooth crown increases with the torsional angle . Consequently, the
coupling is relatively soft under small load conditions and becomes harder and harder as the torque increases. This causes a progressive torsion
curve. The dynamic torsion curve has an insignificantly steeper course.

Special advantage of the progressive torsion characteristic is in the resonance suppression achieved by the SPIDEX-coupling, as the critical
resonance speed depends on the torsional stiffness CT.

The progressive curve therefore mainly protects the coupling against inadmissible overstressing. Furthermore, the torsional stiffness CT of the
spider can be influenced by the choice of an appropriate Shore hardness material. A larger Shore hardness moves the resonance speed higher,
and a lower Shore hardness moves resonance speed into a lower range. If in doubt, we recommend a calculation of the system parameters by
using the moments of inertia of the driving and driven sides.

3. Hints

3.1 General Hints

Before you set this coupling into operation please read carefully these assembly instructions. Please
pay special attention to safety and danger instructions.

As the SPIDEX coupling is approved for use in hazardous areas the safety instructions and remarks
(page 6) are to be observed!

This mounting instruction of the coupling belongs to the documentation of the coupling and has to be
kept closed to the coupling.

3.2 Safety and advice hints

Please pay special attention to the following remarks of this operating and assembly instruction:

DANGER! Danger of injurance of people

CAUTION! Possible damages at the machines

ATTENTION! Important items

PRECAUTION! Hints concerning explosion protection

3.3 Hints of danger

DANGER!

The complete system is during assembly, operation and maintenance to be protected against
unintentional engagement. The danger of being hurt through rotating parts is very high.

The following safety intructions are very important. Please make sure that you read and
observe them:

During all operations with the coupling the safety instructions are to be observed strictly.
Before you start to your on the coupling make sure that the power pack is disengaged.
The power pack is to be protected against unintentional engagement (Removing the fuse for
current supply, providing hints!).
Do not touch the operation area of the coupling as long it is in operation.
Pay attention to the safety distances as long as the coupling runs.

3.4 Proper usage

The coupling has to be used only in accordance to the proposal advised by the manufacturer.
Therefore the mentioned technical datas are to be observed strictly.

Unauthorized modifications on the coupling design are not admissible. We do not take warranty for
resulting damages.

Assembly and maintenance at the coupling is only allowed for authorized people.

The operating and assembling instructions are to be observed strictly.

4. Storage

The couplings can be stored at a dry place between 6 and 9 months. The preservation of the
manufacturer should not be removed.

The spiders made from polyurethan are able to be stocked approx. 5 years in case of favourable stock
conditions.

CAUTION!

Make sure that there is no humidity in the stock rooms. There should be no condesation. The
relative air humidity should be below 65%.

Ozone-generating devices (e.g. flourescent light sources, high voltage appliances) in the
stocking area are not allowed.

5. Mointing

Components of the coupling

The coupling is delivered generally in single parts. Please check the coupling before starting the
assembly in terms of completeness.

2 2 Setscrew 1 + 2

3 1 Spider

5.2 Changing of components

DANGER!

A changing of the components of the coupling is only allowed after rechecking with the
manufacturer!

If the user machines the borings on his own the following instructions should be followed up:

The maximum permissible boring diameters (see page 2, technical datas) must not be exceeded.
If these figures are disregarded the coupling may break. Particles of the coupling rotating in the air
may cause seriuos danger!!
The concentring or axial running parameters of the manufacturer has to be observed.
A careful alignement of the coupling hubs is important to have a safe running of the coupling.
For the axial fastening on the shaft please use a setscrew or an end plate.
If you use a setscrew (DIN 916) pay attention to the mentioned torques in the below shown table.

5.3 Assembly of the couplings

ATTENTION!

Before assembling we recommend to check bores, shaft, keyway and feather key for
dimensional accuracy before assembly. To allow an easier installation of the hubs we
recommend to heat up the hubs slightly (approx. 80C).

DANGER!

To avoid burns through touching the heated hubs wear safety gloves!

PRECAUTION!

Pay attention to danger of ignition in hazardous areas.

CAUTION!

Make sure that the distance dimension E (see page 1, technical datas) is kept to ensure that the
spider can be moved axially.
If you disregard this hint the coupling could be damaged.

After assembling the hubs onto the shafts (driven and driving side) set up the dimension E of the
coupling through moving the aggregates or the hub on the shafts.

Fasten the hubs against moving on the shafts by tightening the setscrews (DIN 916) with cup point.
Pay attention to the torque mentioned on page 5, table setscrews and torque.

If the shaft diameters with inserted feather key are smaller than the dimension dH of the spider, the
shafts could protude into the spider.

5.4 Displacement of the coupling

PRECAUTION!

To avoid dangers in hazardous areas and to ensure a long lifetime of the coupling the shaft
ends must be accurately aligned.

Please abolutely observe the displacement figures indicated (see page 6). If the figures are
exceeded, the coupling could be damaged.
In case of use in hazardous areas for the xplosion group IIC (marking II 2G c IIC T4), only the
half displacement figures are permissible!

The figures shown in the table are valid for a temperature of T= +30C.

CAUTION!
In case of a higher temperature the maximum allowed figures for angular and radial
displacements are to be multiplied with the factor of the temperature!
The checking if the permissible displacement figures are observed are to be done with a dial gauge,
ruler or feeler.
