Introduction

This unit will be on double digit multiplication and is designed for fourth grade students. It

will take five days to complete, and students should already understand place value, addition,

and multiplication. The next sections will give more detail on this unit

Instructional Goal and Objectives

The Utah Core Standards states that students will multiply 2 digits by 2 digits and properly

create equations from real world story problems

The following is a list of educational objectives for this lesson plan:

1. Students will multiply two digit numbers using strategies based on place value and will

show an increase in their pretest score.

2. Students will use area models to find the product of double digit multiplication

equations and will show an increase in their pretest score.

3. Students will multiply two digit numbers using regrouping and will show an increase

in their pretest score.

4. Students will multiply two digit numbers using the Associative Property of

Multiplication and will show an increase in their pretest score.

5. Students will solve multi step word problems using double digit multiplication and will

show an increase in their pretest score.

Instructional Strategies

This unit will begin with a pretest to assess students knowledge before beginning the

lessons. The unit will end with a posttest to assess students understanding of double digit

multiplication. This unit will be taught in five days, therefore there will be five lessons taught

over the duration of the unit. In the first lesson, students will multiply two digit numbers using

strategies based on place value. In the second lesson, students will use area models to find the

product of double digit equations. In the third lesson, students will multiply two digit numbers

using regrouping strategies. In the fourth lessons, students will multiply two digit numbers using

the Associative property of multiplication. In the fifth lesson, students will solve multi step word

problems using double digit multiplication and regrouping. Each lesson in this unit will be one

hour and thirty minutes. The instructor will teach the whole group lesson for thirty minutes.

After the whole group lesson, math centers and small group instruction will begin. During this

time students will participate in tier two small group instructions with the teacher, complete

interactive notebook pages related to math topic, play math games relating to the topic, play

math games using IPads, use QR Code task cards, or work on IReady Math on a Chromebook,

which is a school selected educational program. At the end of the lessons students are given time

to write down what they learned during the lesson, or answer a question about the lesson in their

math notebooks

Learning Activities

Lesson One

Students will multiply two digit numbers using strategies based on place value. Place value

has been taught since First grade, but students need to understand the importance of place value

while solving multi digit multiplication equations. Use the place value chart to review place

value with students. Use the base ten blocks to show students place value strategies.

Lesson Two

Students will use area models to find the product of equations. Using area models will help

students separate the tens and ones of each factor, resulting in finding the product of the multi

digit equations. Use grid paper to help students draw their own area models to solve multi digit

multiplication equations.

Lesson Three

Students will multiply two digit numbers using regrouping. Using the anchor chart, students

will learn the correct steps of solving multi digit multiplication equations. They will also use

base ten blocks to model regrouping.

Lesson Four

Students will multiply two digit numbers using the Associative Property of Multiplication.

They will also illustrate and explain multiplying by tens by using equations.

5
6/24/2017

Lesson Five

Students will solve multi step word problems using double digit multiplication. Once

students have learned different strategies to solve multi digit multiplication equations they can

choose which strategy they prefer. Students will make sense of word problems and solve them.

Assessment and Overview

To assess student understanding and learning they will be given formative and summative

assessments. Formative assessment will be used by observing independent math pages and

students math journals. Questioning will also be a formative assessment during whole group

lessons and tier two small group instructions.

Summative assessments will be given to students allowing students to prove if they can

solve double digit multiplication equations. This summative assessment will include equations

that students must solve, and double digit multiplication word problems.

Materials Needed

The instructor will use the My Math program and students will use workbooks, place

value charts, double digit multiplication anchor charts, interactive notebooks, multiplication

charts, multiplication math games, math journals, and the IReady program for this unit. Other

resources needed for this unit include; classroom smart board, classroom ELMO, student

workbooks with math pages, Chrome books, and multiplication charts. QR Code task cards,

IPads with QR Readers, IPads with downloaded math games, and clickers will also be used.
