Ancient Styles Of Architecture

Architecture has been around for thousands of years. The first book on architecture was written
in the 1st BC by Vitruvius, who is considered to be the first architect. Even before that, the
Greeks and the Romans built huge structures and invented building materials which were so
strong that these buildings stand even today. An that we all know is the Egyptian pyramid of
Giza, which was built almost 5000 years ago.

Over the last 2000 years, many architectural styles have been created. Greek and Roman
architecture are considered to be the Classical styles because of the beauty and perfection of
the buildings. After that came the Middle ages, which saw the rise of Christianity and hence
many churches were constructed, especially in Europe. The architectural style famous during
this time is called Gothic style. This style is still widely used for churches.
INDUS VALLEY CIVILISATION

One of the oldest cities to be built was the Indus Valley Civilisation. This city had close to five
million people living here and was hence the largest city at the time. The city was well planned
with wide roads and a market and had a drainage system that is considered one of the best in
the ancient world.

BUDDHIST STUPA AT SANCHI

In Asia, from around 600 BC to 200 AD, many Buddhists structures were built as many people
became followers of Gautama Buddha. Buildings made of wood and stone became very popular
during this time.

Though many modern styles have been invented architects still look to these styles for
inspiration and sometimes even use the ancient methods of construction.
