Digital Story

Written Component

June 27, 2017

In this lesson students are learning how to create a storyboard to plan for their

digital story. Digital stories can be used in so many ways. Teachers can use digital stories

when introducing new topics of instruction. Research says, integrating visual images

with written text both enhances and accelerates student comprehension, and digital

storytelling is an especially good technology tool for collecting, creating, analyzing, and

combining visual images with written text (Robin, 2008). In this lesson students are

creating informative digital stories.

Common Core Standards

The Common Core standard this lesson is aligned to is W 2.2 and W 2.7. W 2.2

says, students write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use

facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement. This is being

met by this lesson because students are focused on one topic, which they will research,

and inform the reader about via the digital story. W 2.7 says, students participate in

shared research and writing projects. This is being met because for the students to create

the storyboard and digital story, they will have to complete research on a topic.

ILA Standards

I connected this lesson to ILA standards 2.2. This standard says, candidates use

appropriate and varied instructional approaches including those that develop word

recognition, language comprehension, strategic knowledge, and reading-writing

connections. This lesson meets this standard because I use modeling, guided practice, and

independent practice during the lesson. These different approaches help students

understand how to complete the activity.

Kentucky Teacher Standards

This lesson connects to KTS 6.2, 6.3, and 6.5. Standard 6.2 says, teacher uses

available technology to implement instruction that facilitates student learning. This

standard connects because in this lesson I will use the smart board and document camera

to model for students how to move from the graphic organizer to the storyboard. I will

also use the smart board to model how to search on Google for images and to share the

digital story I created. I will use technology to facilitate learning because students will be

using chrome books to complete their storyboards. Standard 6.3 says, teacher integrates

student use of available technology into instruction. This standard is met through this

lesson because students will use chrome books to complete the storyboard during work

time. Standard 6.5 says, demonstrates ethical and legal use of technology. This standard

is being met because my use of technology and the students use of technology we will be

ethical and legal.

ISTE Standards

This lesson is connected to one ISTE standard, with two sub standards. The

standard says, students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop

innovative produces and processes using technology. The first sub standard says, apply

existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. This is met through the

lesson because students are using the research they have done to create a new and

creative digital story to share the information. The second sub standard says, create

original works as a means of personal or group expression. This is met through the lesson

because students are working independently, using their creative juices, to make a digital

story.
TPACK

This lesson embodies each component of TPACK. I am using my content

knowledge to prepare an appropriate lesson for a class of second graders in which they

are working on a standard that is an important skill. All students must know how to write

informative pieces and do research. I have incorporated appropriate technology that both

the students and I are using. Students are using the computer to create their storyboard. In

lessons that will follow, students will use the computer to create digital stories that

inform their audience on a topic they have chosen. This lesson has whole group, small

group, and independent instruction. This is a part of the pedagogy that I know and helps

me plan how to go about teaching this lesson.
