Press Release
On June 24th, 2017 at approximately 3:45 p.m., the Lansing Police Department was dispatched
to the area of 192nd and Oakwood Avenue for a fight involving numerous juveniles.

Through subsequent interviews and investigation, it was found that officers responded to a 911
call, in which the caller stated that approximately 30 juveniles were involved in a fight.

Upon arrival, Lansing Police Officers located approximately 30 juveniles in the area; however,
the fight had already ended.

Officers met with a 12 year old, male black juvenile who stated that earlier, while he was in the
area with friends, a 15 year old male white juvenile gave him a beverage that may have
contained drugs in it. The juvenile became scared and went home and told his family what
happened. A short time later, an older brother of the 12 year old juvenile located and
confronted the white male juvenile. The two engaged in a physical altercation, resulting in the
white male juvenile being struck in the face repeatedly and receiving minor injuries. The male
white juvenile, along with other juveniles with him, fled the area prior to officers arrival.

According to reports provided by the off-duty Lansing Police Officer, while outside on his
personal property, he discovered a backpack in his fenced in backyard that did not belong to
him. After discovering the backpack and finding a baseball hat and a realistic looking bb gun
inside, he encountered a male white juvenile on his property, bleeding from the face. The 15
year old juvenile stated that he was just involved in a fight in which he was beaten up by several
male black juveniles. While speaking with the white juvenile on his porch, a 15 year old male
black juvenile approached, also wearing a backpack. Both of the juveniles attempted to leave at
that point in time. The off-duty officer told them to stay until the arrival of the police. The
juveniles refused to stay and attempted to leave, resulting in the off duty officer physically
detaining one of the juveniles. The juveniles were turned over to the responding officers upon
their arrival.

The juveniles parents were ultimately contacted and they were transported home pending
further investigation. Through interviews it was determined that there were in fact, no drugs in
the beverage.

The Lansing Police Department is aware of the video that has been subsequently posted on
social media regarding the incident, and had initiated an investigation into the matter prior to its
public posting.
