Topic of interest: Combustion and Environmental Engineering

Abstract
As a way for many sectors to generate electricity, internal combustion engines are still widely used.
The fact that these engines works burning fossil fuels, causes many damages to the environment,
due pollutant emissions such as: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, volatiles, carbon
particles and not carboned particles, in addition to compounds which are generated at the
atmosphere through chemical reactions that includes nitrogen oxide and secondary particulate
matter. Another inconvenience is the noise caused by these engines, which occasion complaints
from the operators and the neighborhood. Since the pressure from the environmental organizations
to reduce the emissions and the noise is rising, this research has the objective to develop and
analyze a computational model of an innovative device that makes both, reducing noise and particle
matter from stationary engines that burns commercial biodiesel. This device was modeled and
simulated in software ANSYS FLUENT. This device has a simple construction that allows easier
installation and maintenance. It is based by the principles of the gases scrubber, in which, the
exhaust gases flows through a compartment where water is sprayed with the purpose to agglutinate
particle matter. Therefore, these particles get heavier and fall on bottom of the apparatus, by
gravity, where it can be discarded or recycled. The noise are reduced through decentralized holes
made on the exhaust pipe, reducing, up to 5% dB.
