1. The assumed slab thickness of 100 mm will be used to establish the effective interior beams
in the two directions to determine their respective moments of inertia as well as that of the
slab. The initial effective beams shown in Figures 3.2 and 3.3 has a T-shaped section with
dimensions defined herein :
To determine the moment of inertia of the slab IS in the longitudinal direction, the width of
equivalent frame must be established.
Along longitudinal direction:
BS = with of equivalent frame = average width of adjacent slab panels

BS = 5.70

2. Calculate the value of = Ib Eb/ Is Es along both directions and ,the ratio of long to short
clear spans.
Consider Eb = Es assuming monolithic construction of the floor system
4 4
Longitudinal Ib = 0.00783 m Is = 0.00048 m

Transverse Ib = 0.00893 m Is = 0.00048 m

Longitudinal ln = l - width of beam in transverse direction
ln = 6.00 - 0.30
ln = 5.70 m
Transverse ln = L - width of beam in longitudinal direction
ln = 6.00 - 0.25
ln = 5.75 m
= 5.75
5.70
= 1.009
3. Required minimum thickness h is calculated by either of the two formulas below whichever
is applicable.
and not less than 0.090 m. and not less than 0.125 m
Since m > 2.0, use formula (1) with fy = 276 MPa. ln = 5.75m
= 1.009
h = 5.75(0.8 + (276/1400))
36 + 9(1.009)
h = 0.127
Use h = 0.130 m
4. Weight of slab using the above thickness will be added to arrive at total dead load D and ratio
of live to dead load will be determined.
D = superimposed dead load + (weight of slab= h x weight of concrete)
D = 2.90 + 0.130 x 24
D = 6.02 kPa.
L = 2.40 kPa.
Check ratio of live to dead load is within limitation of Direct Design Method
Ratio L/D = 0.40 OK, < or = 2.0
5. Column and middle strips are established then section properties of effective beam and slab
such as Ib, Is and in both directions shall be calculated. The values of average width of
adjacent panels Bs are same as before but final slab thickness of 130 mm will be used.
Because the calculations are similar to steps (1) and (2), results are shown immediately
without substitution of values as shown previously.

6. Solve for the combined factored loads wu as per Sec. 409.3.1 page 4-43 of NSCP Vol. I -
2010
wu = 1.2D + 1.6L
wu = 1.2(6.02)+ 1.6(2.40)
wu = 11.064 KPa.
7. Analyze moments of the slab panel in longitudinal direction by computing for the total static
moment Mo and distributing it to critical sections for negative bending which is at the face of
the supports and for positive bending at mid-span.
2
Mo = w u l 2 l n /8
l2 = 6.00 m
l n = l- width of supporting beam = 6 - 0.30
ln = 5.70 m
Mo = 269.602 kN-m
For an interior panel:
Neg. M = 0.65Mo = 175.2 kN-m
Pos. M = 0.35Mo = 94.4 kN-m
8. Distribute the above moments laterally between the column strips and middle strip. The
following table is used to determine column strip moments with the aid of interpolation
involving parameters; l2/l1, 1l2/l1 and T.

Neg. M = 0.15 x 131.4 = 19.71 kN m
Pos. M = 0.15 x 70.8 = 10.62 kN m
11. Determine effective depth d and maximum spacing Smax of reinforcement bars. In some
textbooks on reinforced concrete, d in two-way slabs is calculated using the following
equations:
d = slab thickness concrete cover 0.50db along short span
d = slab thickness concrete cover 1.50db along long span
db = bar diameter
Instead of using both equations, the second will be used in calculating d in all problems
dealing with two-way slabs in this book. It is a more conservative and practical than using
two values of d for the design of each slab panel in a floor system since it is equally likely
that rebars in the outer and inner layer will be interchanged during construction
d = hs - 20 -1.5db
d = 130-20-1.5(12)
d = 92 mm
For two-way slabs, maximum spacing Smax of reinforcement is the least value of the
following:
Maximum spacing of temperature reinforcement
Twice the slab thickness
450 mm
12. Calculate required reinforcement for each critical section of column strips and middle strips.
To compute required reinforcement ratio for each critical section of all column/middle strips:
X = Mu
2
bd fy
Mu = moment at critical section (end/interior support and midspan)
= strength reduction for flexure = 0.90
b = width of column or middle strip
= 1-(1-2mX)
m
m= fy = 276 = 15.46
0.85f'c 0.85(21)
Then the minimum must be determined as per Sec. 410.6.1 to .2 page 450 of the Code
min. = 0.25(f'c) = 0.2521 = 0.0042 OR
fy 276
min. = 1.4/fy = 1.4/276 = 0.0051
Reinforcement for two-way slabs is convenient when given in terms of spacing of bars S at
sections of critical moments and this is done by using the formula,
S = area of bar/d
To complete the design process, calculation of required reinforcements for the slab panel at
the column and middle strips along the two directions are performed. Given below are such
calculations for the longitudinal direction. The same is also done for the transverse direction
although not shown, but the complete tabulated results are presented here.
