Sunday, June 25, 2017, Third Sunday After Pentecost

A Peek At The Sunday Sermon

The calendar helped me decided the topic for my Sunday sermon.
No surprise its July 4th Independence Day. Ill be sharing a
message Ive titled One Great Nation Under God.

Okay, its not very original, but along with the Scripture text (Mark
9:33-37), Ill also be using a movie quote to illustrate a point. The
above picture is from the film, Independence Day (1996) starring
Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Will Smith.

What does a cheesy, Science Fiction movie have to do with

Jesus, the Disciples and the Fourth of July? Before you run off to
the lake for your annual family outing why not drop in for our
10:00 AM Worship? I promise Ill have you out the door and back
to your favorite picnic spot, before Noon!

Meanwhile, on the next page is the sermon text read it

prayerfully and carefully, and you will be ready for worship at
Dearborn Congregational. See you Sunday!
Mark 9:33-37 (NLT)
33
After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house,
Jesus asked his disciples, What were you discussing out
on the road? 34 But they didnt answer, because they had
been arguing about which of them was the greatest. 35 He
sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and
said, Whoever wants to be first must take last place and
be the servant of everyone else.
36
Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in
his arms, he said to them, 37 Anyone who welcomes a little
child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who
welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father
who sent me.

Beginning June 11th (Trinity Sunday) and until

November 19th the altar Colors are green,
symbolizing the renewal of vegetation and generally
of lving things and the promise of new life!

Our suggested Scripture reading from the 2017 UCC Church Calendar, is
found in Psalm 105:1-11.
Psalm 105:1-11 (NLT)
1 Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world
know what he has done. 2 Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone
about his wonderful deeds. 3 Exult in his holy name; rejoice, you who
worship the LORD. 4 Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually
seek him. 5 Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the
rulings he has given, 6 you children of his servant Abraham, you descendants
of Jacob, his chosen ones. 7 He is the LORD our God. His justice is seen
throughout the land. 8 He always stands by his covenant
the commitment he made to a thousand generations. 9 This is the covenant
he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac. 10 He confirmed it to
Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:
11 I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.

The Buck Stops Here - or - What The Bible Says About

President Harry Trumans famous plaque on his Oval Office desk read,
The Buck Stops Here. In other words, whatever the blame or
responsibility that passed from one person to another, it ended with him!

Similarly, the Bible represents our final authority for knowing Gods will for
our lives. From the Book of Isaiah to St. Pauls Letter to the Colossians
this is going to be an exciting adventure.

Each week - a different topic for study. Are you ready to discover what the
Bible says about the many issues of importance in your life?

See you Tuesday, July 11th at 7:00 PM!

Circle the Date!

th

DCCs Historic Detroit Churches Tour

Our Annual Historic Church Tour, organized by John Peters, was great!
We started at St Francis
D'Assisi Church on Wesson
St., in Detroit.

Our guide at the church was

Tom Rys. He provided us with
the history of this beautiful
building, which dates back to
1903.

Of particular interest was the original organ - a massive musical instrument

that was installed during construction of St. Francis. In passing, I asked
Tom if it was still being used. In reply, he left us for the organ loft and
played us a hymn! Wow!

The church, like so many, is struggling - but the congregation is optimistic

that they will be around for another 100 years. Our group took up an
offering for the church and thanked Tom for an enjoyable morning.
The Saint Francis sanctuary is breathtaking with an altar and stain glass windows that date
back to the 1900s.

Next stop, Holy Redeemer Church at the corner of Junction and Vernor in
Detroit. This is where I worshiped before our family moved to Taylor.

When I entered the Church, I remarked that it still smells the same.
Funny, how something like the scent of old, wood pews and burning
candles triggers memories.
Our tour guide, Dorothy Alcala,
shared the history of Holy
Redeemer. I learned something
new about my old church. During
WW2, the church held 11
services on Sunday with
attendance at EACH service
averaging over one-thousand!

Our day ended with lunch at Armandos Mexican Restaurant, located on

Vernor Highway, across from Clark Park. When you are Mexican Town
you gotta eat Mexican!

Im looking forward to Sunday with my Church family. Its going to be a

good day Worship, Communion, and Brian Sampson has some special
music for our time together!

Blessings,

Pastor Bill
