AbrasivesandSurfaceCleanliness
Anotherareacommonlyaffectedbyalackofclarityisthequalityofabrasives.Atypicalspecificationstates:

Abrasivesshallbeclean,dry,sharp,angular,andfreeofclay,saltandoil,and,Abrasivesshallnotleaveexcessive
residueonthesurface.

However,acertainquantityofcontaminationisgenerallyacceptableandthetestmethodsfordeterminingtheir
presenceandconcentrationareincludedinstandardssuchastheISO8502series,whichwerereferencedinthis
particularspecification.

So,therequirementthatallabrasivesshallbeclean,dry,sharpandangularfreeofclay,saltandoilandshallnotleave
excessiveresidueonthesurfaceiscontrary.Thiscausesconfusionandleadstolossoftime,theneedclarifyandlikely
additionalcosts.

Ratherthantryingtocontroltheabrasivequality,thespecificationengineershouldhaveconcentratedoncontrollingthe
effectoftheabrasives,whichissurfacecleanliness.

otherindustrystandardsprovidethemeanstomeasuremanyofthecharacteristicsincoatingoperations,whichthen
allowthespecifiertostatetheacceptablelevelsforeachinacoatingspecification.

Doingitthiswayprovidesthenecessaryclarityanddefinition.Thoserequirementscanthenbeincludedinthe
ContractorsProcedureandtheInspectionandTestPlandocuments.Sowhenqualitycontrolactivitiesarecarriedout,

areclearlywrittenintotheweldingspecification.
