INTRODUCTION

Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA)

The RULA Assessment Tool was developed to evaluate the exposure of individual workers
to ergonomic risk factors associated with upper extremity MSD. The RULA ergonomic
assessment tool considers biomechanical and postural load requirements of job tasks/demands on
the neck, trunk and upper extremities.

A single page worksheet is used to evaluate required body posture, force, and repetition. Based on
the evaluations, scores are entered for each body region in section A for the arm and wrist, and
section B for the neck and trunk. After the data for each region is collected and scored, tables on
the form are then used to compile the risk factor variables, generating a single score that represents
the level of MSD risk.

The RULA was designed for easy use without need for an advanced degree in ergonomics or
expensive equipment. Using the RULA worksheet, the evaluator will assign a score for each of
the following body regions: upper arm, lower arm, wrist, neck, trunk, and legs. After the data for
each region is collected and scored, tables on the form are then used to compile the risk factor
variables, generating a single score that represents the level of MSD risk as outlined below:

DISCUSSION

Task 1 : Workshop (Tyre Service)

For this task, the RULA assessment is taken at 1 of the tyre service center in Ipoh, Perak. The
assessment is done to the workers when changing the car tyre at 3 different posture. For the
Assessment 1, the posture is evaluate using the RULA assessment tools and the final score is 5.
For the Assessment 2, the final score we get is 7 while the Assessment 3 final score is 5. It is shown
that the posture in Assessment 1 and 3 have medium risk to suffer musculoskeletal disorders.
Therefore, these two workers posture need to be investigate further to avoid any injury or pain to
the workers. For Assessment 2, the score 7 shows that the work has very high risk to suffer the
musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). Therefore, the worker which used to be at that posture need to
implement change of their working posture as well said not to be in that posture for too long in
order to avoid the injury and pain.
