Alternative Herbicides
Turf Maize: corn-based herbicide that prevents germination of weed seeds. Contains 10%
fertilizer by weight. For the prevention of dandelion and smooth crabgrass seed germination in
lawns where established Kentucky bluegrass is predominant. This granular product can be
applied twice a year, in early spring and late summer, before the propagation of weed seeds in
lawns.

Bio-Weed: organic weed suppressor and slow release fertilizer.

Weed & Grass Killer: The formulation is made from plant oils widely used as food and
cosmetic additives "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) by the Food and Drug
Administration. All of the active ingredients are university-validated and tested. The Bioganic

Weed-Shield: Patented material guaranteed for 5 or 10 years. Cover with layer of organic

Scythe Weed & Grass Killer: Scythe is a broad spectrum post-emergent contact herbicide that
has pelargonic acid as its active ingredient. Pelargonic acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid
like that found in soap. It is much stronger than other fatty acid herbicides on the market. It is
the pelargonic acid (nonoaic acid) in Scythe that removes or "burns" the waxy cuticle of the
broadleaf or grassy weed. The tissue then dries ups. It is not systemic and has no residual
activity in the soil. It can be used in flower gardens, spot treatment in lawns (carefully), edging
grass, weeds in cracks and crevices, pathways, roadside and non-edible crop applications. A
unique use for it is to treat plants that have sent out suckers like sumacs, aspens, mint etc. It will
not harm the parent plant. When working in tight quarters an old paintbrush may be used to
apply Scythe to the unwanted vegetation. Like any soap it can be a skin and eye irritant. It does
not translocate in the soil or persist in the environment. It will not have any effect on non-green
woody tissue. Care must be used in application as it can damage any desired vegetation it
contacts. Pets and people must be kept off of treated areas until they are dry as walking on it can
transfer it onto desired vegetation.
WARNING: because it is broad-spectrum, it may kill aquatic flora if it gets to water bodies.
 Alternative Insecticides and Fungicides

Surround: food additive based protective coating that blocks and repels insects

Serenade: Bacillus subtilis strain based fungicide that destroys disease-causing pathogens and
makes it difficult for diseases to develop resistance. It can be used on organic crops, and it is
non-toxic to beneficial insects.

Stylet-Oil: Biodegradable fungicide, insecticide, and virus fighter that makes it difficult for
diseases to develop resistance. It can be used on organic crops, and it is non-toxic to beneficial
insects.

d’BUG: a citrus oil-based insecticide made with d-Limonene. Safe to use around humans,
animals, and food. The d-Limonene instantly strips away the protective wax coating from the
exoskeletons of insects, causing them to suffocate and die on contact. It can also be used as a
residual insecticide that works for several weeks after application.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE): DE is composed of finely milled fossilized shells of minuscule

organisms called diatoms. The microscopically fine, sharp edges desiccate the insects'
exoskeleton upon contact and the pests dehydrate and die within hours. The insects also die
when they eat the dust. While other insecticides kill chemically, and insects, most usually over
time develop an immunity to the chemicals, DE kills bugs physically and insects have not yet
been developed immunity to a physical action. Is non-toxic to humans and animals with no
harm to the environment. It’s totally organic and safe. It contains less than 1% percent of
crystal and silicon.

Pyrethrum: Pure powder derived from 100% African Chrysanthemum flowers. 100% organic.

Beneficial Nematodes (Steinernema sc, sf, and hb): nematodes are microscopic, nonsegmented
worms that occur naturally in soil all around the world. Steinernema carpocapsae and
Steinernema feltiae prey on ants, termites, and the larval and grub stages of various insects.
Once they are released, the nematodes seek out host insects and enter their prey through body
openings, injecting them with lethal bacteria, then feeding on the resultant material. The
nematodes reproduce and their offspring feed on the dead insect and emerge to seek out new
hosts. The endo-toxin generally results in death of the host insect within 48 hours.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. kustaki (also known as Bt var. Berliner): Bt var. kustaki can be
sprayed onto plants, where it is eaten by leaf-eating insects. The Bt disrupts the insects'
digestive system and they starve. Bt is completely environmentally safe.

Neem Oil Insecticidal Soap: An EPA-registered natural alternative to toxic chemical
insecticides. Neem Oil Insecticidal Soap interrupts vital functions of insects in different ways.
The primary mode of action is degradation of the protective, water-proofing insect exoskeleton.

Neem Oil: Is a natural control for insects, mites, and fungi. Neem Oil is a naturally occurring
compound made from the neem tree that is grown in India. Neem oil is pressed from the seed of
the tree and has been used for 4,000 years as a medicinal herb and insect repellent. Naturally
occurring compounds in neem oil discourage feeding on treated plants. It functions well as an
"antifeedant", discouraging insects from feeding but not directly killing them. When ingested,
neem disrupts the molting and reproductive cycles of many insects. Neem has proven
remarkably non-toxic to birds, mammals, and beneficial predators like ladybugs, spiders, bees,
and wasps. It can be watered in or applied as a foliar spray.

Soybean Oil: This product (Golden Pest Spray Oil) is a concentrate made with 93% soybean oil.
It controls mites, sooty mold, scale, whitefly, and mealybug.

Hot Pepper Wax Insect Repellent: This natural, non-chemical formula effectively repels insects
away without harmful chemicals. Hot Pepper Wax is made from a concentrate of Cayenne
peppers, assorted repelling herbs, and food grade paraffin wax. Simply mix with water and
spray. It stays on the plant up to three weeks even if it rains. This natural wax also offers
protection to plants from hot, dry, and windy conditions. Food plants do not absorb the heat of
the pepper and, if necessary, the wax washes off easily with warm water.

Hot Pepper Wax: A liquid concentrate containing chlorinated refined wax (FDA approved for

Peppermint Oil Soap: 100% Pure castile oil soap with peppermint, coconut, and jojoba oils

cleaning spray and insect repellent.

Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt) Thuricide®: A liquid formulation of bacteria. An Insecticidal Soap

that won't harm beneficial insects. Bonide (BT) is a bacterium which is selectively toxic to
many moth and butterfly larvae (caterpillars). The insects stop feeding and die within 2-3 days
of ingestion. There is no residue problem, and being exempt from tolerance requirements, this
product may be applied at recommended amounts up to the day of harvest.

Crab Shell: Crab shell is high in chitin, which promotes the growth of chitin eating bacteria. The
exoskeletons of fungus and harmful varieties of nematodes eggs are high in chitin. Crab shell
helps to create a hostile environment for the fungus and root destroying nematodes by
nourishing biological life that eats chitin-based organisms. The chitin in the crab shell
stimulates soil organisms to secrete enzymes called chitinases. These enzymes degrade chitin,
which is a component of flea egg shells. Japanese Beetle grubs, and grubs in general, have jaws
made of chitin, which is dissolved by chitinase bacteria. Crab shell can kill off grubs at the
same time. The presence of chitin makes it a natural biopesticide that is non-toxic to birds,
animals, fish, and plants.

Plantskydd®: Is an animal repellent developed in Sweden, now made in the USA. It is a 100%
natural product made from 100% natural ingredients. Made with dried blood (porcine and/or
bovine) and vegetable oils. Plantskydd contains no synthetic additives, is non-toxic, and is not
harmful to animals or the environment when used as directed. Dried blood is recognized by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an environmentally safe ingredient and is exempt
from EPA Pesticide Registration. Plantskydd repels by emitting an odor that browsing animals

Lime Sulfur Spray: An insecticide-fungicide for fruit trees, shade trees, shrubs, roses, and
berries. Protects against a variety of pests, including scales, mites, and borers. Also controls
diseases such as peach leaf curl, maple gall, powdery mildew, anthracnose, rust and black spot.
A dormant (winter) oil spray smothers over-wintering fungi, disease-causing viruses and insect
eggs.

Sharp Shooter: An all-purpose insecticide made from lemon juice components. Controls many
kinds of insects.

Dipel 150 Dust: A biological insecticide that effectively controls chewing larvae (caterpillars)
pests such as cabbage looper, imported cabbageworm, grape leaf folder, and hornworm.
Contains the bacteria, bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). The targeted pests ingest the bacteria, which
then infects and kills them.

Surround WP Kaolin Clay: Surround is made from 95% kaolin clay, a naturally occurring
edible mineral long used as an anti-caking agent in processed foods and in such products as
toothpaste and Kaopectate. When applied to fruit trees, crops, and other plants, it forms a white,
non-toxic particle film that places a barrier between the pest and its host plant. It sticks to their
body parts and encourages them to move on elsewhere. It can be applied up to day of harvest,
and at harvest time the white film can be removed simply by rubbing off. There appears to be
no mammalian toxicity or any danger to the environment posed by the use of kaolin
in pest control. Do not apply directly to water, to areas where surface water is present, or to
intertidal areas below mean high water mark.

Milky Spore Disease Powder: An environmentally safe way to control grubs, especially in
lawns. Milky spore is a disease that specifically targets Japanese beetle grubs and, once in the
soil, continues to control them for 20 years. Milky Spore will not spread in the soil unless grubs
are present. After milky spore has built up in the lawn, infected beetle larvae (grubs) will die
and decay, releasing billions of new spores into the soil. This process continues year after year.
Once the soil is saturated with spores and the grubs are destroyed, milky spore remains dormant
and viable, ready to go to work once again should new grubs appear.

Orius insidiosus for thrips control: The insidious flower bug, Orius insidiosus, is an effective
thrips predator. Like other predatory bugs, Orius insidiosus attack their prey with a needle-sharp
proboscis through which inject pre-digestive enzymes and withdraw the bodily fluids of the
prey. The midsize (2.5mm) adult females lay up to 100 eggs in plant tissues. When the nymphs
hatch and reach their second stage of growth, they start looking for prey.

Lacewings (Chrysoperla) for Aphid control: Known as "aphid lions", lacewings are nocturnal
predators. They are available as eggs, larvae, and adults. As larvae, lacewings are opportunistic
predators and they keep aphids and other soft-bodied pests at bay. Female adults actively seek
out colonizations of aphids. Mated females then lay their eggs among the aphids. The eggs
hatch into larvae which then devour the aphids.

Caterpillar control (Trichogramma pretiosum and Trichogramma minutum): Adult wasps lay up
to 300 eggs each, parasitizing an equivalent number of caterpillars, loopers, and worms.

Ladybugs (Hippodamia convergens) for Aphid control: The ladybug is a predator that feeds
opportunistically on aphids. Adult beetles seek out and devour aphids. In addition, the female
beetles lay up to 50 eggs per day. They lay orange, football-shaped eggs on the upper-sides of
leaves on infested plants. The eggs hatch into black, alligator-like larvae with orange markings.
The larvae are also fierce predators, devouring up to 400 aphids.

Parasitoids (Aphidius matricariae and Aphidius colemani): Aphid parasitoids are tiny (2-3 mm),
stingless mini-wasps. They help prevent and correct low-level aphid populations. They can
work together with other predatory insects to control over 40 aphid species. The wasps lay their
eggs in the aphids. The eggs hatch and the resulting larvae devour the aphids from within.

Aphid midge (Aphidoletes aphidimyza): Mosquito-like midges about 3 mm long, their larvae
are predacious. They control substantial populations of more than 60 species of aphids. Because
these midge are nomadic, they actively seek out aphids, even high up in trees. These midges
ship as pupae which soon hatch. The resulting adult midges mate, find some aphids, and lay
eggs. The eggs hatch into small orange larvae which devour the aphids from within.

as chipmunks, groundhogs, mice, moles, possum, rabbits, rats, shrews, skunks, squirrels, voles,

Neoseiulus fallacies, Phytoseiulus persimilis, and Stethorus punctillum for Spider Mite control:
These are an all-purpose predatory mites. These mites are tiny spiders which prey voraciously
on several spider mite pest species, including carmine red mites, European red mites, citrus red
mite, and many others. Adult females lay eggs amongst spider mite concentrations and their
webbing. The eggs hatch into small larvae which develop into nymphal forms before reaching
adulthood. Both larvae and nymphs are predators.

Cryptolaemus montrouzieri for Mealybug control: A type of ladybug beetle, the mealybug
destroyer has been used for decades to control mealybug infestations in citrus crops. They are
also effective in controlling mealybugs on houseplants and in greenhouses. The adult females
lay eggs in the cottony egg-masses produced by the mealybugs. The eggs hatch into larvae
which then begin feeding on the smaller mealybugs and their eggs and continue their feeding as
they become adults.

Sluggo: A blend of iron phosphate and bait additives to control slugs and snails. The bait

gradually settles to the bottom where the mosquito larva eat it and die. Mosquito Dunks are 2
inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick, with a small hole in the center. The Dunks float on top of
the water and will be effective for approximately 30 days. While floating, they slowly release
the larvicide that settles in the water where it is eaten by mosquito larvae. Alternate wetting and
drying will not reduce their effectiveness. The center hole can be used to anchor the dunks in
