For MSc Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Education - Cardiff University

Without education, there are no doctors is a phrase that deeply describes the
importance of medical education in producing best quality doctors, yet Indonesia
Medical Council showed that in 2015 only 17 (22,7%) out of 75 medical schools in
Indonesia had a grade A in accreditation. In my opinion, one of the problems is the lack
of medical education expert in Indonesia and most of them focus only on undergraduate
program. My faculty, Universitas Padjadjaran, is one of grade A campus for medicine
in Indonesia. However, we only have one expert in medical education who focus on
the undergraduate program. I propose medical schools in Indonesia need to add more
experts that beside focus on undergraduate program, also focus on postgraduate,
clinical, or specialization program. By studying medical education at the Cardiff
University, as one of the leading center in the world, I believe that I will be equipped
with necessary tools to develop an effective medical education system for my campus
and Indonesia with a better quality.

In the spirit of my vision to take roles in improving medical education quality in

my campus and Indonesia, I started my effort by joining a medical students
organization. I chose to involve in medical education division. My eyes were widely
opened that the problems were not only my campuss dilemma but in all schools. I tried
to improve students awareness and contribution to medical education by some
programs; as students contribution does not really count in almost all medical schools
in Indonesia. I made a program related to inter-professional education and practice that
brought me into Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia through a project
named Health Professional Education Quality (HPEQ) Project. I involved in the
improvement of medical and health professional education in my country by programs,
research, and advocate. This chance also brought me to Newcastle, Australia, and
Oxford, the UK to present my program in two international conferences. Until today, I
have no formal experience in teaching but I liked to teach my junior assistant doctor
while in clinical phase in the school. For me, teaching is way to understand deeply
about a subject.

In order to translate my passion in improving medical education into a tangible

contribution to Indonesia, I need a wider knowledge in medical education and how it
should be done. I particularly interested in the module of Learning and Teaching in
Clinical Education and Assessing Learning at the Medical Education Program of the
Cardiff University. It is my opinion that those three modules are related to my biggest
schools problem. Thus, with a good knowledge, I hope that I can give a bigger
contribution for my campus and my nation.

After finishing my study, I would like to start my contribution by joining the

medical education division in Universitas Padjadjaran. By adapting and implementing
my knowledge to locals condition, I will improve medical education in every segment,
especially in clinical education and learning assessment.

Hopefully, I was able to convey my eagerness to study at the Cardiff University; I

am looking forward to discussing our medical education system in Indonesia and
receiving more knowledge about medical education from all sources in the university.
I believe my experiences and boundless enthusiasm in medical education will enable
me to bring perspectives and ideas to the university life at the Cardiff University.
