art, sculpture, symphony, opera) that you did.
What do you like about it?
Are you intrigued by it?
Do you appreciate or
do you not understand why its

Where in the world is it happening?
Your personal opinion: Could this event
(if tragic) have been prevented? How?
In what way(s) does this event impact us here in Canada?

5.
Storyteller
:
Prepare ahead of time. Share a story that youve read, heard or
remember.
NO THEN I WOKE UP AND IT WAS A DREAM.

your story so you can tell it without the use of cue cards. Use rich
words.
Remember expression and gestures.

OR

Optimist:
Talk to the class about what makes you happy or why you
are grateful
Spend time telling us why it makes you happy, or why you
appreciate something.
How might the rest of the class also find happiness or
appreciate things more?

6.
Citizenship
;
Watch your classmates the week prior to TUSC. Watch for acts of
kindness, kind words towards others or any other
deeds that you believe makes a good class citizen.
CREATE CRITERIA (e.g., honest, supportive,
forgiving) Try to think of criteria to use that is
unique and different from previous Citizenship
speakers have used.
Explain your criteria to the audience before
naming the student and presenting the award.
Create an award to present to the recipient and
when the recipient comes up, be specific about
when you saw the citizen demonstrate these
positive characteristics.

7.
Demonstrator
;
Demonstrate how to do something in front of the class. This can be
something that you already know how to do that you think would
interest the class. It can also be something new that you have learned
how to do yourself in preparation for this role.
Have the steps to the demonstration clearly written out for the
audience to see and follow along with you as you perform the
demonstration. (chart paper, poster, slide)

8.
Travel Agent
Introduce us to a great place to visit. It should be somewhere we
havent heard of yet. Pick a continent, country we havent learned
much about.
Research a travel destination and share your
information with the class.
Show us where it is on a map. How would
someone travel there? How long would that
take?
Show us images (not just one) of this
location. What is there to do there? What is
the climate? The landscape?

9.
Healthy Lifestyle :
Choose something to speak to the class about that is to do
with a healthy lifestyle.
Choose from:
Healthy eating, nutrition,
Physical exercise
Mental health (e.g., How might we notice we are
stressed? What should we do? What if we feel like
something is really weighing on our mind. Who should
we talk to? What mental illnesses are an area of concern for
school-aged children/teens? What resources are available? Help Line?
Teachers? Friends. When should someone tell an adult about a friend
if theyre worrying about them?)
How to stay physically healthy

help this animal thrive?

11.

history.
one
Choose significant event that happened to explain in detail.
A short slide presentation using images and written facts is
recommended.

12.
Class Comedian :
Tell 2-3 appropriate riddles or jokes.
Encourage audience participation but dont let it
get out of control to the point where you continue
speaking and no one can hear. Take charge.

13.
Artifact Talk
:
Research artifacts from museums around the world (e.g., the
Smithsonian, British museum of antiquities, Canadian Museum of
History).
Find a picture to share of one particular artifact that interested you
and share interesting information: Where was it discovered? What
was it used for? How old is it? Is there an interesting story behind
this artifact? Why was this the artifact you selected to share?

14.
Website/App Reviewer :
DO NOT CHOOSE A GAME. Find a website or app that performs a
task that is interesting or new and cutting edge.
Why was this website/app created?
What uses might it have in business, education?
How did you find out about it?

15.
Musical Moment :
Choose a piece of music to share with the class. The music can be
from any genre (classical, an aria from an opera, jazz, rock)
You should know that Mrs. Tubman will award a higher score on
the creativity rubric line if you choose a genre outside of your
normal comfort zone and that has not recently (or ever) been
shared with the class. Consider musical genres from other
countries too! (e.g., Indian Raga, Japanese Koto, Nordic Folk)
At some point during your presentation share the title of the piece,
the artist etc.
What instruments are used?
What is the piece about? Is there a message, a story or a theme?
DO NOT just play the music and let that be your presentation. Make
sure you cover the above bullet points as well an excerpt of the music.
(not the whole piece.)

and the implied message(s)?
What product company has produced this commercial?
Are they part of an umbrella company that has other brands? Do their
other brands have contradicting messages? Explain?
(E.g., Dove is part or Unilever. Unilever also produces a product called Fair
and Lovely in Asia that is for women of Asian complexion to bleach their skin in
order to become more white. This does not match Doves message of
celebrating each persons unique beauty with their commercials showcasing
women of all complexions and forms of beauty.)

17.
Biographer:
Choose someone from history or current times who has had an impact
in their chosen field (e.g., medicine, education, politics, science,

another country/culture to Canada.

19.
Seventh Inning Stretch
Lead the class through some stretches because weve been sitting for
a while. Make sure that they dont need lots of space, or have to get
down on the floor; theres just too many of us in this room. Try and be
creative with how you get the class to do the stretches. For example,
We are going to do 12 toe touches (start doing them). Were doing 12 because, did
you know that the Hawaiian alphabet only has 12 letters?

20.
Community Correspondent:
Share2 community events or news items with the class. These can be
events that just recently took place or are upcoming.
If there is nothing of particular interest to you happening here within
Stitsville, look to the broader community of Ottawa. It is not
acceptable to say that nothing has gone on.

Present an invention that has made an impact on our
world.
Show pictures. Are there pictures you can show of
the earliest version and how it has changed over time?
Describe who invented it and why.
Explain why you think it is an important invention and how it affects us
today in 2015/2016.

22.
Photo Analyst
Find a photograph on the internet and interpret it. Why was this
picture taken? Who is the photographer? What is this photographer
known for in terms of subject, style? How did the photographer
construct the image (e.g., what is meant to be the main focus)? Is
there something more prominent in the image than other things?)
If the photograph has a title tell us what it is and what you think
might another appropriate title. If it doesnt have a title already
provide one.
What sensory details are in the image? Sight (colours), touch
(textures). What might be heard if you were in the
scene?
What do you wonder about?

23.
Talent
Show your talent (something you can do well) and
perform for the class.

more about.

before
answer or respond to this topic you survey people.
Why do you think they would respond this way?
Why did you choose this question? How would you
respond?
Survey at least 10 people prior to your TUSC
presentation. Collect and manage the data and create a
data organizer (tally, chart, graph) to share with the class. What
ratios did you observe in the data results?

25
Controversial Issue
Pick a controversial issue to speak about. This is your chance to give
your opinion on this issue without being
interrupted by anyone else. It can be
about something that is being debated
in current events right now, or trending
in social media.
OR
It can be a pet peeve. For example, one
of my pet peeves is when you hold the
door a little for someone following
after you and they just walk through it
with no thank you. Whats yours? Why?

26
Thanker
Play close attention to all the speakers. Keep this role sheet handy while
people are presenting. Thank 3 people who did their role well today say why.
What specific skills were well done today (e.g., attention grabber?
Memorable ending? Gestures? Engagement with audience? Rich Tier 2
words? Props? Images?)

27, 28, 29
Feedback
Keep this role sheet handy as well as
the rubric. Provide general feedback to
the whole class as to how well the roles
were performed in terms of speaking
ability, stance, preparation and
completion of all the elements in the
role. In your opinion, what needs to be
worked on the most in order for us to further improve?
