Wilson County Humane Society Adoption Policies

1. Adopter must be 18 years of age or older.
2. All animals adopted from WCHS must be spayed or neutered. Animals over 4 months of
age will be altered prior to adoption. Animals under 4 months require a spay/neuter
contract and prepayment of the surgery included in the adoption fee.

3. NO gift adoptions. The person that is going to be responsible for the pet must be present
at the time of adoption.

4. No pet will be adopted without applicant signing a SPAY/NEUTER contract. If current pets
of potential applicant have not been spayed or neutered and there is no medical reason,
the potential adopter will not be allowed to adopt from the WCHS. Adopter must furnish
proof adopted pet has been spayed/neutered according to the date specified on the
adoption application, upon request.

5. Applicant with poor pet history cannot adopt. All present and past pet history must be
verified upon request by WCHS.

6. No large dogs adopted to people who live in apartments.

7. Adopter must provide proper and sufficient food, water, shelter, medical care as needed,
and kind treatment to the pet at all times.

8. No puppy/dog will be allowed to be chained or tied to any object, indoors or outdoors.

There must be a fenced yard or, at least, a large pen for exercise, as well as a dog house
for shelter.

9. All animals adopted are to be pets (no guard dogs or hunting dogs).

10. Adopter agrees to license the animal in compliance with the laws and ordinances in
force in the municipality in which adopter resides.

11. WCHS reserves the right to reject any applicant we feel would not serve the best interest
of the pet.

IT IS THE DESIRE OF THE WCHS TO MAKE A GOOD MATCH BETWEEN PET AND OWNER. WE
WILL QUESTION YOU REGARDING YOUR LIFESTYLE, HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS, AND HOW YOU
PLAN TO KEEP THE PET WHEN YOU ARE NOT AT HOME. PLEASE RESPECT OUR RIGHT TO DO
THIS, KNOWING THAT WE HAVE BOTH THE PET AND YOUR BEST INTEREST IN MIND. WE DO
NOT WANT OUR PETS TO BECOME REVOLVING DOOR PETS AS THIS CREATES STRESS ON
ANIMALS AND DEFEATS OUR PURPOSE TO PROVIDE STABILITY IN THE LIVES OF THESE
DESERVING CREATURES.
