DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS

This, that, these and those are demonstratives. We use this, that, these and those to
point to people and things. This and that are singular. These and those are plural. We
use them as determiners and pronouns.

DETERMINERS PRONOUNS

This, that, these, those as determiners

We use this and that with singular and uncountable nouns:

Try to repeat this exercise every morning and evening. (this + singular countable noun)

What does this music make you think of? (this + singular uncountable noun)
Ive never been to that part of France. (that + singular countable noun)
Can I have some of that juice, please? (that + singular uncountable noun)

We use these and those with plural nouns:

You can use any one of these computers. (these + plural noun)
I need to paint those windows. (those + plural noun)

Time phrases
We often use this with words describing time and dates like morning, afternoon, evening,
week, month, year to refer to the one thats coming or the one were currently in:

Ill be with you some time this evening.

Johan seemed very happy this afternoon.

Ian is in Germany all this week.

This, that, these, those as pronouns

Referring to things or ideas

We normally use this, that, these and those as pronouns to refer to things or ideas:

Pgina 4
Put the butter, chocolate and sugar in a saucepan. Heat this over a low flame until it
melts.

Were going to eat first and then go to the film. Are you happy with that? (Are you happy
with the idea of eating first, then going to the film?)

[talking about the TV]

Can you turn that off if youre not watching it?

[talking about shoes]

What colour are those? Black or dark blue. I cant see.

Referring to people

We can use this and that as pronouns to refer to people when we want to identify
ourselves or others, or to ask the identity of other speakers:

Linda, this is my mother, Anne.

Is that your brother over there?

We often do this in telephone calls and in answer-phone messages:

Hello, is that Ken Orm? This is Jane Bromham here.

THIS AND THESE, THAT AND THOSE: USES

Physical closeness and distance

We use this and these most commonly to point to things and people that are close to the
speaker or writer, or things that are happening now:

Shall I use this knife here?

Is this what you mean?

Ill post these letters on my way home.

Do these belong to the Bradshaws?

We use that and those most commonly to point to things and people which are not easy
to identify in a situation. They are often more distant from the speaker, and sometimes
closer to the listener:

Whats in that bottle over there?

Could you blow out those candles near you?

Sometimes they are not visible to either the speaker or listener:

Budapest! Thats my favorite place!

Emotional distance

We sometimes use this, these, that, those to identify emotional distance. We use this
and these to refer to things that we feel positive about, that we are happy to be
associated with, or we approve of:

I love these new woollen mobile phone covers that you can get.

We use that and those to create distance:

[talking about a restaurant]

I didnt like the decoration. It had those awful paintings.

Shared knowledge and new information

We sometimes use that instead of the to refer the listener to shared knowledge, often
when we are telling a story or explaining something:

You know that old shop on the corner? Well, theyre going to turn it into a restaurant.

We sometimes use this instead of a/an to refer to something important or recent, or to

introduce a new person or thing in a story:

This guy knocked on the door and asked if I wanted new windows.

Then suddenly she pulled out this big pile of papers from her briefcase and threw them
on the table.

Substitution with that, those

In formal contexts, we can use that and those as substitutes meaning the one(s):

The most important information is that given at the beginning of the manual. (that
substitutes for the information)

The methods employed are those familiar to researchers. (more formal than The
methods employed are the ones familiar to researchers.)

In formal contexts, especially in academic style, we use that of/those of instead of the
one of/the ones of or the one/the ones. This is preferred to the possessive Xs
one/Xs ones:

The proton has a similar mass to that of a neutron. (Preferred to The proton has a similar
mass to the neutrons.)

The emotions in the poems are those of loss and grief.

Not: The emotions in the poem are loss and grief ones.

Why study computer technology?
The computer is a truly amazing machine. Few tools can
help you perform so many different tasks. Whether you
want to track an investment, publish a newsletter, design a
building, or practice landing an F14 on the deck of an
aircraft carrier, you can use a computer to do it. Equally
amazing is the fact that the computer has taken on a role in
nearly every aspect of our lives. Considerer the following
examples:

- Today's automobiles could not even start (let alone run efficiently) without embedded
computer systems.
- An estimated 10 million people now work from home instead of commuting to a traditional
workplace, thanks to PCs and networking technologies.
- People use e-mail for personal communications nearly 10 times as often as ordinary mail
and nearly five times more than the telephone.

Computer are everywhere

Does it sound like an overstatement? No matter how you perceive the impact of computers, the
statement is true. Computer are everywhere. In fact, you can find them in some unlikely places,
including your family car, your home appliances and even your alarm clock.

In the past two decades, computers have changed our lives at home, work and school. The vast
majority of businesses now use computerized equipment in some way and most companies are
networked both internally and externally. More than half of all home in the United States have at
least one computer and most of them are connected to the internet. Workers who once had little
use for technology now interact with computers almost every minute of the workday.

In the World, there are many types of computer that are in common use today. This work will
focus on personal computers.

Definition of computer
In basic terms, a computer is an electronic device that processes data, converting it into
information that is useful to people. Any computer is controlled by programmed instrucctions.

The computer (that are all around us) are digital computer (see
Figure 1). Digital computer are so called because they work with
numbers. That is, they break all types of information into tiny
units and use numbers to represent those pieces of information.
Digital computer also work in very strict sequences of steps,

Figure 1.
Pgina 9
processing each unit of information individually, according to the highly organized instructions
they must follow.

A lesser-known type of computer is the analog computer, which

works in a very different way from digital computers. The first
computers were analog systems and todays digital system owe
a great deal to their analog ancestors. In addition, analog
computers were mechanical devices, weighing several tons and
using motors and gears to perform calculations. For example,
Vannevar Bush created the differential analyzer. This computer

used electronic motors, gears and other moving parts to solve equations (See Figure 2). Figure 2.

Computer can be categorized in different ways. For example, some computers are designed for
use by one person, some are intended to be used by groups of people and some are not used by
people at all. They also can be categorized by their power, which means the speed at which they
operate and the types of tasks they can handle. Within a single category, computer maybe
subcategorized by price, the types of hardware they contain, the kind of software they can run, in
addition to other features.

Computer for individual users

Most computers are meant to be used by only one person at a time. In some occasions, these
computers are often shared by several people. (For example, computers that are in the schools
computer lab), but only one user can work with the computer at any given moment.

The main types of computers in this category are:

Tablet computers

Desktop computers Types of Smart phone

computers

Handheld computers Workstation

Pgina
10
These systems are all examples of personal computer a term that refers to any computer system
that is design for use by a single person. Personal computer are also called microcomputers,
because they are among smallest computers created for people to use. Although personal
computers are used by individuals they also can be connected together to create networks.

Desktop computers
The most common type of personal computer is the desktop computer. This computer is designed
to sit on or under a desk or table. These are the system you see all around you, in school, homes
and offices.

Now, the desktop computer are far more powerfull than those of just a few years ago and are
used for an amazing of tasks. Not only do these machines enable people to do their jobs with
greater ease and efficiency, but also they can be used to communicate, produced music, edit
photographs and videos, play sophisticated games and much more. Desktop computer are
indispensable for learning, work and play used by everyone from preschoolers to nuclear
physicists.

The main component of a desktop PCs the system unit, which is the case that houses the
computers critical parts, such as it processing and storage devices.

Workstation
A workstation is a specialized computer for a single user, which usually has more power and more
capacity than a standard desktop PC. These machines are popular among scientists, engineers and
animators who need a system with a speed and power greater than average to perform
sophisticated tasks. Workstations often have large, high-resolution monitors and accelerated
graphics handling capabilities, making them suitable for advances architectural or engineering
design, modeling, animation and video editing.

Notebook computers
The notebook computers, as their name implies,
approximate the shape of an 8.5 by 11 inch notebook and
easily fit inside a briefcase. They are also called laptop
computers, because people frequently set these devices on
their lap. These amazing generally weigh less than eight
pounds and some even weigh less than three pounds.

Tablet PC
The tablet PC is the newest development in portable, full
featured computers. Tablet PCs offer all the functionality of a
notebook PC, but they are lighter and can accept input from a
special pen (called a stylus or a digital pen) that is used to tap
or write directly on the screen.

Handheld PCs
Handheld personal computers are computing devices small enough
to fit in your hand. A popular type of handheld computer is the
personal digital assistant (PDA). A PDA is no larger than a small
appointment book and is normally used for special applications,
such as taking notes, displaying telephone numbers and addresses
and keeping track of dates or agendas.

Many PDAs let the user access the Internet through a wireless
connection and several models offer features such as cellular telephones, camera, music players
and global positioning system.

Smart Phones
Some cellular phones double as miniature PCs. Because
these phones offer advances features not typically found
ini cellular phones, they are sometimes called smart
phone. These features can include web and e-mail access,
special software such as personal organizers, or special

Pgina

hardware such as digital cameras or music players.

Computers in Society
People can list countless reasons for the importance of computers. For someone with a disability,
for example, a computer may offer freedom to communicate, learn or work without leaving home.
For a sales professional, a PC may mean the ability to communicate whenever necessary, to track
leads and to manage an ever-changing schedule. For a researcher, a computer may be the
workhorse that does painstaking and time-consuming calculations.

Home
In many homes, the family computer is nearly as important as the refrigerator on the washing
machine. People cannot imagine living without it. In fact, a growing number of families have
multiple PCs in their homes; in most cases, at least one of those computers has an Internet
connection. Why do home users need their computer?

Communications
Schoolwork
Entertainmet
Finances
Bussiness Work
done at home
Education
More and more Schools are adding computer technology
to their curricula, not only teaching pure computer skills,
but also incorporating those skills into other classes.
Student may be required to use a drawing program, for
example, to draw a plan of Machu Picchu for a history
class, or use spreadsheet software to analyze voter
turnouts during the last centurys presidential elections.

Small Business
Many of todays successful small companies simply could not exist without computer technology.
Each year, Hundreds of thousands of individual launch businesses based from their homes or in
small-office location. They rely on inexpensive computer and software not only to perform basis
work function, but also to manage and grow their companies.

Pgina
13
Industry
Now, enterprises use different kinds of computers in many
combinations A corporate headquarters may have a standard
PC-bases network, for example, but in production facilities
may use computer controlled robotics to manufacture
products. Here are just a few ways computers are applied to
industry.

o Design
o Shipping
o Process Control

Government
Not only are governments big consumers of technology, but they help to develop is as well. The
U.S. government played a key role in developing the internet. Similarly, NASA has been involved in
the development of computer technologies of all sorts. Today, computers play a crucial part in
nearly every government agency:

o Population
o Taxes Portable computers are
o Military now among police officers
o Police weapons choice

Health Care
Pay a visit to your family on the local hospital and you will find
yourself sur-rounded by computerized equipment of all kinds.
Computers, in fact, are making health care more efficient and
accurate while helping providers bring down costs. Many different
health care procedures now involve computers, from ultrasound
and magnetic resonance imaging, to laser eye surgery and fetal
monitoring.

Looking inside the computer system

A computer is a collection of parts, which are categorized according to the kind of work they do.
Although there are many, many variations on the parts themselves, there are only a few major
categories. If you learn about those families of computer components and their basic function.
You will have mastered some of the most important concepts in computing.

Pgina

The parts of a computer system
The computers come in many varieties, from the tiny computers built into household appliances,
to the astounding supercomputers that have helped scientist map the human genome. But no
matter how big it is or how it is used, very computer is part of a system. A complete computer
system consists of four parts.

Hardware People

(The computer) (Users)

Data
Software
(Information)
(Programs)
Hardware
The mechanical devices that make up the computer are called hardware. Hardware is any part of
the computer you can touch. A computers hardware consists of interconnected devices that you
can use to control the computers operation, input and output.

Ventilator
Hard disks
Motherboard

Monitor
Printers
Hardware

The keyboard
Scanner
Memory RAM
Processors
Mouse

Software
Software is a set of information that makes the computer perform tasks.
In other word, software tells the computer what to do. Some program

exist primarily for the computers use to help it perform tasks and manage its own resources.

Data
Data consist of individual facts or pieces of information that by
themselves may not make much sense to a person. A computers
primary job is to process these tiny pieces of data in various ways,
converting them into useful information.

Users
People are the computer operators, also known as users. It can be
argued that some computer systems are complete without a persons
involvement; however, no computer is totally autonomous. Even if a
computer can do its job without a person sitting in front of it, people
still design, build, program and repair computer system.

Sometimes I get to feelin'
I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids when we were young
Thing seemed so perfect - you know
The days were endless we were crazy we were young
The sun was always shinin' - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don't know
The rest of my life's been just a show

Those were the days of our lives

The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing is true
When I look and I find I still love you

You can't turn back the clock you can't turn back the tide
Ain't that a shame
I'd like to go back one time on a roller coaster ride
When life was just a game
No use in sitting and thinkin' on what you did
When you can lay back and enjoy it through your kids
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don't know
Better sit back and go with the flow
Cos these are the days of our lives
They've flown in the swiftness of time
These days are all gone now but some things remain
When I look and I find no change

Those were the days of our lives - yeah

The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing's still true
When I look and I find
I still love you

I still love you.
