Architecture Biennial, a series of exhibits, events and full-scale
installations, usually from October to January, that delve into the
future of design around the globe. And you cant talk about whats
new in the food world without mentioning Beverly Kim and Johnny

some of the attractions that have historically dened
visits to the island of St Helena. This speck in the South Atlantic
has a population of just 4,131 who, until this year, were linked to
the outside world only by a Royal Mail Ship, which also ferried
people interested in the endemic ora and fauna on the ve-
day trip from Cape Town. A new airport a ve-hour ight
from Johannesburg, starting this month will make it more
accessible for another breed of traveller, albeit one that can
no longer revel in the drawn-out task of reaching one of the
planets remotest inhabited islands. Twenty-rst-century contact
hasnt come without controversy: the runway cuts across the
home of the critically endangered wirebird and a number of
rare invertebrates, but its also an opportunity to generate a
wider interest in their protection. For now, the island still has a
wild feel. A barren coastline rings a verdant interior where forts,
waterfalls and the Longwood House museum (where Napoleon
was exiled) are catnip to hikers and history buffs. The tiny faded
capital, Jamestown, is squeezed between valley walls and has
just a few restaurants. The best of the limited places to stay

workaday pied--terre and extended guest house of
Charles Chaplin. Today, hidden away in a residential
block off Melrose Avenue, screened by owering
oleanders and wrought-iron gates, the 13 rooms
feel more like a tiny village, with their mock-Tudor
faades, shingle roofs, cascading ivy, leaded windows
and oral window boxes, connected by a winding
gravel path through lush and wild gardens. All
rooms have kitchens and strong natural light; some
have exposed ceiling beams and Twenties-style
checkerboard bath tiles. And while the interiors are
tastefully bland, most rooms have private terraces
and all have access to the gardens, barbecue deck and
stone replace with wraparound seating. The Clark,

a master bedroom with French windows opening on

Lombardi House Suite 1717 celebrates
Lombardi Houses
For decades since the Forties, this 1904 estate was home traditional architecture
to Philip and Sylvia Lombardi, vocal coaches to opera
divas, vaudevillians and Hollywood actors, including a
Grease-era John Travolta (his autographed photo hangs
near the vintage Kroeger piano in the foyer). But as
neighbouring estates were razed and redeveloped, the
rambling house faded and crumbled, seemingly destined
for demolition. Then Jacques Massachi unveiled the

San Vicente Bungalows
Just off the hot zone of Santa Monica, this place has a
heated pool with candy-striped awnings and a herd of
white-cushioned loungers, and is fringed with bamboo,
bougainvillea and banana trees. After sunset, the trellised
courtyard is lit with fairy lights and candles. Its relaxed
vibe and simple white bungalows reect a loose, pre-
corporate Californian dream. The decent-sized rooms
have a shabby-chic look and come at bargain rates for
the neighbourhood. Its mercifully no longer the sketchy,
clothing-optional haunt of previous incarnation San
Vicente Inn, although not everyone will appreciate the
well-used furnishings, room keys with plastic fobs or
overnight parking fee. Oh, and the cheapest rooms have
shared bathrooms. But if you book a King room with
en-suite bath, ditch the rental car for Uber, dont plan
on early nights and dont mind a little wear and tear
(scratched paintwork is standard), then its a clean,
budget option thats all about location.

atmospheric dark-green hallways, purple rooms though
not helpful when shaving or putting on make-up. The rooms
border on cramped but the beds are comfortable and the
showers are powerful. There is no pool and the AC is set for
the whole building, which can be frustrating. Walls are thin
so ambient noise can be an issue, but theres a Thai massage
room and the southern-style Hart and the Hunter restaurant

the famous H&H smoked trout. Local Californian vineyards

ith a cosmopolitan population and a rich heritage
dating back to 1770, Seychelles offers an ideal escape
for culture lovers.
The islands rich culture and traditions are drawn from
African, Malagasy and European origins. Discover this diverse
ethnic mix through a wide range of local music and dance
festivals. Traditional dances inspired by the islands unique
communities are an essential part of Creole festivities. The
Sega dance uses instruments like rattles, hand drums, gourds
and musical bows combined with hip swinging, while the
Moutya dance takes place around a campre and starts slowly
to the beat of a single drum and gets faster with the tempo
increase. Accompanied by banjos, accordion, violin and
triangle, the Kanmtole country dance has its roots in European
heritage and involves intricate movements to the instructions
of the Komandan or Commander who calls the sets.
The Seychelles Creole cuisine reects the ethnic diversity
of its local communities with India spices, herbal aromas
from France and rice dishes and steamed sh and vegetables
from China. Authentic culinary favourites include grilled sh
marinated in a crushed chilli, ginger and garlic sauce; avourful
coconut octopus and chicken curries; Kari Zourit (roasted sh

New York just cant be

native HANYA YANAGIHARA

O
ne of the many good things about
being a New Yorker is the liberty,
the obligation, even, one feels to
complain about ones home town.
Happily, there are plenty of things
to complain about. The weather:
so cold! And then: so hot! The
trafc: so congested! The subways:
so slow! The tourists: so many! And, in recent years, one can
add to the list what seems to be the unstoppable mallication
of the city, created by an inux of money and visitors (a
projected 67 million by the end of 2021): so depressing. But
while its true that the last two decades have transformed
certain neighbourhoods in downtown Manhattan and
Brooklyn to the point of unrecognisability, its also true that
despite the mass-market stores and general hipstercation,
the one-of-a-kind shops that have always dened the citys
sense of itself are as abundant as ever. With new money has
come a sense of retail innovation and stylistic diversity. The
result is a sort of golden age of New York shopping, with
everything you ever coveted, and plenty you never knew
you did, available to buy. Heres where not to miss.

of colours fading from cerulean at its centre
through radiant yellow to muddy russet in its
shallows mystied tribes and 19th-century
fur trappers, modern science informs us that
the rainbow effect is the result of colonies of
different pigmented bacteria that live in the
waters. But this is no colourful bubble bath:
the 370ft-wide pool is created by hundreds
of gallons of boiling water that surge from a
ssure in the earths crust each minute. The
site can be found in a wide, treeless valley
atop swelling subterranean lava vats that vent
through billowing geysers, and was described
by one famous chronicler of the British Raj as
Hells Half Acre. But far from deterring visitors,
the devilishly sulphurous and seismically active
landscape attracts three million visitors each
year. Established as a national park in 1872,
the 9,000sqkm of mountainous terrain is also
home to Jurassic fossils and a bison reserve.
