Whentheeverythingintheroomispositionedinawaytoencourageconversations,studentswillbe
morewillingtocommunicatewitheachother.Ithinkthatthereiscertainlyavalueinstudentssittingtogetherin
pairsaswellworkingingroupsof4.Itwasinterestingtoseethedifferencebetweenfirstobservationwhere
studentsweresittinginpairsandthesecondobservationwherestudentsweresittingingroupsof4.When
studentsarearrangedingroupsof3or4,theteacherneedstomodelhowtointeractwithpeerssostudentsare
awareofwhatisexpected.Asamathcoach,Ineedtodiscusswaystomodelgroupdiscussionswhen
suggestinganewseatingarrangementinaclassroom.Manystudentsareusedtosittingaloneinrowsandthey
donotknowwhatisexpectedfromthemwhentheysitingroupsoffours.
