Just wanted to feed back on the activity with Sheena It was fabulous! I could
see that all the patients were really enjoying all the interactions and not only
that but it made all the staff smile. I noted that this type of interaction activity is
really good for allowing reminiscence and fun but it seemed to give patients
a chance to show that their cognitive skills are maybe not as bad as staff first
thought.

This type of activity (more interactive activity) is really easy to see the benefit of
and allows everyone to see the more positive side; not only of care provision
but of people too.

Thank you so much for involving our ward and I really hope they can come
again.

Thanks a million for arranging the poetry event with Anne Connolly; patients
are still talking about it. A thoroughly beneficial session, both stimulating and
relaxing at the same time. Great!

Hoping that you can afford us with some more sessions.

Also, Anne Elliots Art Therapy Class went down a treat; Anne truly went the
extra mile with them. Everyone is looking forward to her forthcoming visit. It
goes without saying that Annabelles singing group was rapturously received.

Introduction to Programme

As the title of this brochure suggests, we believe that when you move forward
you should do it with a nod to what has gone before, in order to learn from
past work and build on our successes.

Our new 3-monthly brochure has spurred us on to alter how we programme

the gallery spaces across the 4 hospitals. One of the major changes in the
gallery programme up until January 2018 is that there will be an overarching
curatorial theme, with one exhibition, in 3 parts, spread across 3 hospitals.
More information on this is included in the Exhibition sections.

In all the work we do, the relationships we build and sustain are crucial to
informing our programmes of activity. The better the relationship between
artists and patients, the Artlink team, the nursing teams and all the other
organisations we work with, the more relevant the activities are to the
environments they happen in.

Its exciting and refreshing to learn from each other, with each individual and
organisation bringing their experience and knowledge into the conversation,
enabling us to construct an exciting programme.

We have received some great feedback, so please keep it coming. All our
contacts are on the back page so dont be shy about getting in touch.

We look forward to working with you all over the next 3 months and hope
that everyone has a great summer.

Exhibitions

In response to feedback from past exhibitions, Artlink is changing how we

programme exhibitions across the hospitals. This will allow us to reflect on what
we have done before, how it has shaped our work to date and how it will inform
our work in the future. From August to January the exhibition will be in three
parts across St Johns, the Royal Infirmary and the Royal Edinburgh.

Each part of the exhibition will be designed with the particular hospital in mind,
there will be arrangements of works brought together through their aesthetic
relationships, finding a shared visual language between them to enable us to
make more abstract connections. Each space will have a slightly shifting focus.
If you are able to travel between all 3 hospitals you will see artworks by artists
Claire Barclay, Gary Burden, Malcolm Thomson, Jonathan Owen, Neil Grassie,
Jocky and Nicky.

Across the hospitals, we will look at how

working together through the process of
making can dissolve hierarchies, allowing
people to develop artwork and express
their individual identity, whilst finding lasting
forms of artistic expression. Can automatic
actions express deeper emotionalthought?
Come along and decide for yourself.

In the meantime we will offer a programme of activities and workshops on

wards and in public spaces that we know from your feedback you love having
at St Johns. We have two public events happening in the coffee lounge. From
the return of the celebrated Tea Dance with Lord Holyrude, to the popular and
participatory Hooptacular, who are making an appearance at St Johns for the
first time.

There should be something for everyone in the programme. We hope you

are able to participate in the open events and that patients and staff enjoy the
performances on the wards.

Event

For the first time Sheena Byrne will be doing workshops at St Johns. She has
been working at some of the other hospitals and it has gone down a storm, and
we thought you would like the opportunity to take part. Sheena is a dynamic
dance teacher working within a wide range of community settings for health and
wellbeing. These fun movement classes are great for people of all ages and you
dont need to be able to dance to take part!

Discover the benefits of hooping for health, learn new techniques and get active

is a chance for the whole St Johns community to chat and reminisce over a cup of
tea together and enjoy some fabulous vinyl. Find a dance partner and take to the
dance floor!

Deirdre Nelson: Two Works; Easterhouse Shopping List,

Exhibition

Pride and Participation

We have invited Glasgow-based textile artist Deirdre Nelson to undertake a
residency with patients and staff at the WGH.

As an introduction to Deirdres work, we are pleased to show the Easterhouse

Shopping List in the gallery, an artwork from another residency that she
participated in at Platform Arts, Glasgow. She worked with people in the
Easterhouse community aged 60+ to create an ideal shopping list.

After taking this work as a starting point, Deirdre did a residency here that lasted
throughout February, and during this time she collated a catalogue of pride called
Pride and Participation. This has taken the form of a wall installation of stickers
that gathers the many things that make staff and patients proud at the WGH, from
passing an exam, to hearing their granddaughter sing, to an act of everyday
kindness.

Get involved:
Contribute what makes you proud for this accumulative artwork. The more people
that get involved the better!

Please add your own suggestion to the display that is currently on the gallery wall.
The artist will host an event at the WGH in August to share the outcomes, so keep
an eye out for more information.

The Artlink Gallery at the Western General is located in the Link Corridor between
the Anne Ferguson and Alexander Donald Buildings.

Anthony Schrag: Amongst Other Things
Anthonys idea for this project comes from the premise that the way we move is
sort of a non-conventional way of communication. As part of Amongst Other
Things at the Western General, beginning with a core group of hospital staff, artist
Anthony Schrag will explore forms of physical expression with hospital staff, and
develop an iterative, informal choreography of the Western General hospital.The
collaboration will evolve as the artist begins to work in the hospital and will have
some form of public outcome towards the end of the project but going on Anthonys
past work in hospitals which involved lots of activity, dance and movement, we
know it will be fun and engaging. Look out for more info in July.

say, variety is the spice of life. It also has a rich history in the UK. Cabaret singer
Miss Annabel Sings will take you on a whistlestop tour of the Music Hall hits right
up to the present day, encompassing the nations love of talent shows.

We will become like (a) family

Workshop

The geodesic dome is now complete and looking wonderful in the garden. The
dome looks great, but we are proudest of the fact that one of the patients was very
active in helping to construct and build the dome with James.

The dome is a great place to sit and relax, providing much needed shade for the Albie Clark
gents when the sun is out. It is also a lovely place to sit and have a chat or a cup
of tea. Over the next period we will be doing outdoor workshops in the dome
that will be open to other dementia wards at the REH to participate in. Look out for
posters advertising those events a bit later in the year.

We will continue to work closely with Frank Charleston, SCN Pentland Ward and
Frances Aitken, SCN Ward 14 to explore an even closer working relationship
between the two wards, particularly in terms of workshops, but also in relation to
enabling relatives from both wards to work together as one Learning Team.

As a way of getting everyone together we plan to do a couple of one-off short
practical workshops, such as offering training in how to do simple hand massage.

As mentioned in the previous brochure we are developing

a research project with Fiona McLachlan, Professor of
Architectural Practice, University of Edinburgh and we are
delighted to report that Fiona has been successful in being
awarded an Innovation Initiative Grant from the University of
Edinburgh for this project.

We are excited about future developments and look forward

to updating you further in the next brochure.

The Glasshouses

The Big Sing 2017 Anne Elliot

Artlink have been working at the REH for over 25 years, based at the Glasshouses
for the last 5 years. Its a fantastic resource where we deliver a regular programme
of workshops Monday to Thursday.

We also use the garden around the Glasshouses for 4 events each year, the most
recent one, The Big Sing, happened on Thursday 1st June where we had over 100
people joining in the singing and the picnic.

There are various places around the Glasshouses where you can sit and have lunch
or just sit and relax and have a 10 minute de-stress, everyone is welcome to use
the outside space.

drawing. People often think they cant do art,
you will be surprised at what you can achieve
in this supportive and encouraging environment

DIY and GardeningVolunteers at the Glasshouses

The Glasshouses are amuch-lovedfacility for patients at the Royal Edinburgh.

The tradition of helping out with smallDIYand gardening projects continues in this
supportive and encouraging weekly workshop. Just come along and join in if you
are interested in picking up gardening & maintenance skills? All tools, supervision,
advice and protective clothing will be provided.

Volunteers are looking for more benches and garden furniture to rescue with

Garden Club at the Glasshouses
Get some hands on time with nature at the Glasshouses with Anne Elliot. Enjoy
working in the warmth of the middle greenhouse to do some gentle indoor tabletop
gardening. Why not try activities such as potting on, watering, sowing seeds and
learn how to propagate plants. If the weather is fine you can also work outdoors
digging, planting potatoes, cutting grass and helping to weed.All great fun and
good to get you active in a gentle way. Volunteers will start to reap the rewards of
what they have sown. Look out for pop-up plant sales in the main corridor of the
hospital and at the Summer Fte.

Expressive art group exploring many different techniques and themes. During July
and August patients will be working on making props, costumes and banners for the

Sing for Fun at the Glasshouses

Workshops

Patient singing group led by musician Penny Stone in the Glasshouses. Open to all
patients who like to sing! We are looking to get more people involved in the patient
singing group so if you have an interest in singing or music please contact Penny to
get involved. She will visit the wards to encourage more people to participate, so
please speak to her if you are interested.

Making Workshop with Claire Barclay
To coincide with Amongst Other Things, Claire Barclay will undertake
a five-week making workshop during the summer. Some of the work that is
developed during this time will be displayed in the new Vitrine Galleries on the
wards at the Royal Edinburgh. More information about the Vitrine Gallery project
will be included in the next brochure.

Workshops

From January 2017 Anne Elliot, Artlink and Lynda Girvan, Art Therapies have been
working with patients and staff to explore ideas for a new artwork commissioned
especially for the R.F.U. Anne and Lynda have already undertaken 10 sessions and
there has been an additional workshop with Francis Priest, who is one of the artists
who has been commissioned to make an artwork for the new hospital.

The emphasis now is to engage more staff in the process, present back ideas for the
final artwork and then commission an artist to undertake production of the work.
The aim is to make an artwork for the unit which has been touched by many hands.
We will update with photos of the finished piece when it is completed.

Summer Fte Friday 11th August, 11am - 2pm

The highlight of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital calendar is the Summer Fte which takes
place in front of Mackinnon House on Friday 11th August. This special occasion brings
together everyone at the hospital and its a great chance to have some fun, catch up
with old friends and win prizes!

Artlink will be there adding their contribution to the diverse and exciting mix of stalls,
the official Fte raffle, games, therapets and live music. Refreshments will be available.

Outdoor Garden
Anne Elliot has been working closely with activities nurse Jacqui Mackay, Prospect
Bank staff, relatives and the local community to develop their outdoor garden
space.Relatives have been very generous with their donations of plants etc as well
as their time.A volunteer team from Tesco spent two days transforming the space
making incredible improvements. Annes role now is to involve patients in using
and enjoying their outdoor space and will be working with them right through to
September of this year.
