Harmonics in power system, Power Distribution and Alternative

Assignment title
energies

Purpose of this assignment

This assignment will give you the opportunity to show your knowledge of basic
engineering problems involving Harmonics in power system, Power Distribution and
Alternative energies. You will analyse power quality and solve the problems caused by
harmonics in power system and find the solutions of harmonics mitigation. Moreover,
you will be able to determine and evaluate the parameters of distribution system and
understand alternative energies.

Scenario

You are working as a Project Engineer in Omega Integration Pte Ltd. You are attending
a training session arranged for the Project Engineers by your sister company Alpha
Integrations. After the training you have been asked by your trainer to solve the following
tasks in order to assess your level of knowledge and understanding. You are given a
WiFi equipped notebook and you can use any information you may need.

Task 1 : (LO 2: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and M1, M2, M3)

1. Power quality and harmonics in power system

a. Present and analyse the phenomena/problems that affect to power quality.

b. List and evaluate some different methods of mitigation of harmonics.

c. Compare and explain in detailed about the parallel resonance and series
resonance in power system.

2. A power system is given as shown in Fig.1. Series resonance occurs when the
shunt capacitor and the inductance of a transformer or distribution line may appear as
a series LC circuit. Known that:

Z s (60 Hz) 0.075 j1.061

C 100uf X c (60 Hz) j 26.5258
I 2 20 A I 3 20 A I 4 20 A......
XC

Fig.1

a. Explain the effect of series resonance when it occurs in the system in which
parallel resonance exists.

b. Present the method to determine system parameters such as the Source

Impedance (Zs), Capacitance Impedance (Xc), Impedance with Capacitor (Cap)
and without Cap, Impedance Gain and Current Gain.

c. Using appropriate software to calculate those system parameters. Then plot the
graph to see the effect of series resonance when it occurs.

Task 2 (LO3: 3.1, 3.2)

1. Power distribution:

a. Present the different types of power system topologies.

b. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of radial and ring distribution system.

2. A two-wire distributor 1200m long is loaded as shown in Fig. 2 as below. The

power factors at the two load points refer to voltage at R. The impedance of each
line is (0.15 +j0.2) . The voltage at point R is 230 V. Calculate:

a. The sending-end voltage

b. Load current at R, Q, PQ

c. Power factor at sending-end

d. Phase angle between the voltages at both the ends.

Task 3 (LO 4: 4.1, 4.2 and D1, D2, D3)

1. Single-phase and three-phase distribution

a. Compare the economics of single-phase and three-phase distribution.

b. Give examples or present the applications that are suitable to single-phase and

three-phase distribution systems

2. Alternative energies

a. Illustrate an alternative energy resource that you are concerning about or relevant
to the topics whose students presented in the class.

b. Give some detailed applications.

c. Demonstrate a technical method to design an appropriate system using the

alternative energy resource presented in 2.a.
