STRONGER WALLS
IN TODAYS AGE

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Blocks or commonly known as AAC blocks

were invented in Sweden back in 1923 and introduced as a concrete-
based material used for building internal and external walls. AAC blocks
made headways in developing countries and a favourite amongst property
developers and home builders.

AAC blocks are suited for urban and sub-urban buildings as it is highly
customizable, easily routed, sanded and cut to size on site. AAC blocks
best features are that theyre lightweight, fireproof and serves as a great
insulation. They are also highly resistant to sun, wind, fire, sound, termites
and pests. More and more state-of-the art buildings and contemporary
residential homes are built using AAC blocks.

AAC Wall Cracking Problems

The main issues that slow down the mass usage of AAC blocks in the construction and building
industry are:
- AAC walls cracking
- Water seepages and water retention

AAC WALLS CRACKING

1. Ground Settlement 2. Differential Settlement

Being cementitious, it requires sufficient
amount of water for the the mixture, which
will activate the hydration process, resulting
in the reduction of the volume of material and
the volume of excess water. In many cases, it
will cause shrinkage cracking. The autoclaving
process of the AAC block will reduce the
drying shrinkage significantly.

colour, which means the moisture level is at
its highest, and if its below 15% (indicated in
green), means the substrate is totally dry.

The reason for the paint peeling is due to the

Water absorption into AAC blocks is evidently visible
even after immersion into a waterbath for a short period of time

Water Absorption of AAC Blocks

This AAC block has been immersed into water over a period of 10 minutes and is then cut into
half to observe the water penetration depth. Evidently, water has absorbed in, amounting to
almost 35% of the total area of the block.

Unlike concrete walls, the air-cell structure of AAC blocks are not interconnected in parallel
formation, thus water penetrates by way of absorption instead of capillarity. However, water
can only penetrate AAC blocks to a certain depth even if it is subjected to longer hours of
water immersion due to its uneven cellular structure formation.

Water penetration problems within AAC blocks are commonly caused by cracks found within
the AAC block joint mortar or when the AAC block joint mortar fails.

Water seepages within AAC walls are mainly located at:

- The base of external walls, directly or indirectly in contact with rain water.
- Internal walls subjected to exposure to water eg. wet kitchens, toilets, etc.
- Other wall areas which come into direct contact with water.

INTRODUCING THE ROXSiL

AAC WALL SYSTEM

Its fast, its water resistant, its crackless, its so easy!

It is the only moisture resistant and crackless AAC wall system today.
Roxsil Silicone Sdn Bhd offers a complete range of products under the Roxsil AAC Wall
System which caters to a complete installation process for building an AAC block wall.
The Roxsil AAC Wall System alleviates the common problems of wall cracks and water
intrusions after it is installed.

HOW THE TECHNOLOGY WORKS?

The extensive research and development has enabled the Roxsil AAC Wall System
to be commissioned and adopted particularly to assist and solve the current
problems faced by property owners and developers.

Some features that enables this system to work well are as follows:

1. The Roxsil Double Inter-locking Technology

Roxsil AAC Adhesive absorbs and penetrates It will penetrate deep into the substrate

2. Bending Moment

A load test was conducted, which comprises of 4 AAC block pieces bonded with
Roxsil AAC Adhesive. It was loaded at mid-span to determine the bending moment.
Based on an effective span of 1.95m and maximum load of 2.325KN, the bending
moment was 1.13kNm. The self weight of the AAC blocks bonded test specimen
was ignored.

Specifications of AAC block during load test:

- Dimension : 100mm x 200mm x 600mm
- Dry Density : 600 +/- 50kg/m3
- Compressive Strength : +/- 5.5MPa
- Water Absorption : 8% +/-
- Thermal Insulation : 0.244W/mk
- Dimensional Stability : 0.1 0.2 %

Results:
Roxsil AAC Adhesive is able to resist a bending moment of above 1.00kNm

3. Direct to Block Stacking System

This system works when the Roxsil AAC Adhesive bonds up to 50%-60% of the contact
surface of the block and the balance of the block has 100% direct block to block contact.

The Double Inter-locking mechanism of the Roxsil AAC Adhesive ensures a seamless gap
between the blocks as it absorbs and bond the blocks together, creating a high bonding
homogenous strength wall.

A solid and stronger wall eliminates

the chances of cracking

Advantages of Direct to
Block Stacking System:

As a result of lab and field tests on the

Direct to Block Stacking System, and
because of Roxsil Double Inter-locking
technology, have helped to mitigate the
problems of wall cracking.
Thin joint mortar installation

The main cause for AAC walls to experience

cracks and water intrusions are found within
the thin joint mortar bonding method.
Excessive hydration of the cement weakens
the bonding strength of AAC blocks. Ground
vibrations and settlements will weaken these
walls further.

In this system, the stability and strength of

the wall is totally dependent on the
compressive and bonding strength of the thin
joint mortar.

The thin joint mortar used for bonding AAC

blocks is 2-3mm thick as compared to the
10-15mm cement joint mortar for brickworks.

THE TRUE PERFORMANCE OF

ROXSIL AAC
WALL SYSTEM
1. Labour
Skilled labour is the most important and valuable commodity in the installation
process of AAC block wall.

1.1 The cost of labour is a variable cost,

which means it can be lower if the speed of
installation can be increased. The cost of the
AAC block remains a fixed cost.

1.2 Cost of manpower to install a

total brick wall is 20 - 40% higher
than an AAC block wall.

Cost for clay brick installation is significantly

pricier than AAC block

1.3 Cost of manpower for installing AAC

block wall using the Roxsil AAC Wall System
is lower than laying a brickwall.

A handyman installing AAC block wall

2. Installation Speed
2.1 AAC blocks using thin joint mortar versus clay bricks
The installation speed of Roxsil AAC Wall System is approximately 6 - 8 times faster than clay bricks,
thereby lowering the total cost.

2.2 Installing AAC block wall using thin joint mortar versus Roxsil AAC Wall System
The installation speed of Roxsil AAC Wall System is easily 2 - 3 times faster than using thin joint
mortar. Thus, a quicker installation speed reduces the cost of labour thereby lowering the total cost.
