Letter to Parents/Guardians: Welcome!

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

My name is Erin Allen-Freeman and I am the 11th-12th grade business and finance teacher at xxxx
High School. I am looking forward to a fantastic year with your student and am thrilled they
chose to explore and expand their skills in business and, most importantly, finance! To begin, I
am a new member of the community, so I would like to tell you more about my background and
how to contact me.

I grew up in Graham, TX near Possum Kingdom Lake and graduated high school at Graham High
School. I went on to study at Tarleton State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science
in Business Management and Administration with distinguished honors. While in college, I
worked for the Health & Human Services organization, Consumer Directed Services, Inc., helping
children with disabilities with daily personal or educational assistance in order to achieve a more
independent lifestyle. I moved to the Dallas/Ft Worth area in 2012 where I worked for an
IT/telecommunications staffing company as a Human Resource Administrator. Later on, the
company went bankrupt and layoffs began. I went on to work for Pier 1 Imports Home Office
as the Human Resource Coordinator for our 1,200+ North American stores. In 2016 I relocated
back to my hometown where I worked remotely as a product marketing and sales manager at PC
Pitstop, makers of PC Matic security, and assisted in expanding their first ever B2B brand, PC
Matic Pro. For the past year and a half, I have traveled multiple times to government and
education conferences, ultimately sparking my interest to get back in the classroom this time
as an educator.

Now, I am currently a graduate student at Tarleton State University and a part of the Teacher
Model of Accelerated Teacher Education program (TMATE) in Fort Worth, TX. While this is my
first year teaching, it has always been a dream of mine to become an educator, and I come to
this school with years of applying the business/finance skills I have acquired. I am excited to
teach your children some of what I have learned along the way!

Lastly, I take my role as a teacher seriously, and it is my responsibility to provide an effective,

encouraging, safe learning environment for all class members. I truly believe in your childs
potential and I want them to believe it, too! With engaging learning communities at school and
at home, together we can make it happen.

In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My e-
mail address is erin.allen@go.tarleton.edu.

Have a fantastic year!

Mrs. Freeman

In the upper right corner, write your class period.
Under your name, write the date.
On the class period, write the assignment.

Turning in Completed Work/Homework:

When you enter each day prepared, you will place any work due in the correctly labeled slot.
The student will:

due as students arrive in class.
If a physical paper copy is due, the completed assignment is placed in appropriate
file labeled at back of classroom.
Any soft/electronic copies must be submitted per instructions prior to class time
on due date.
Take a seat.

4
Students or teams that finish an in-class assignment prior to other students or groups will listen
to teachers enrichment instruction, which typically consists of:
o Working with your team on iPad app, Biz Kid$
o Writing in weekly journal
o Peer-assisting other groups and provide professional input as needed
o Collaborating with group to create a sensory product to apply what was
just learned (i.e. infographic, presentation, podcast, etc.)

Absenteeism The student will:

Follow school policy & provide any documentation needed.

Locate missed assignments from the class calendar (online or turn-in table).
Have 2 days to make up missed work for excused absence.
Our class is an organization, functioning together daily. If you know you will be absent, talk with
me beforehand to gather materials needed and ensure your team has your classroom role
covered.

Tardiness:
If you are not in your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy.
Bring a tardy slip, but come in quietly.
Listen for instruction.

Late Work The student will:

Choose to not submit work by the deadline.
If it does happen, the student will have:
a. 20 points deducted per late day
b. Only 2 days maximum to turn in for any points for unexcused absences.
For excused absences, please refer to the Absenteeism information (pg. 5).

Agenda/Assignments:
The beginning of every week, students are required to pick up the weeks agenda
which includes:
1) The skill(s) we will be covering that week.
2) Any assignments (online or hard copy) due.
Students can find the agenda on the turn-in table.

5
Wheres the turn-in table?
Here.

Notes from Home:

Parents can reach me via e-mail at erin.allen@go.tarleton.edu for any questions, feedback, or
concerns throughout the school year. If needed, students and guardians can schedule time with
me during my office hours or after school (days/hours are TBD).

Also, in an effort to keep parents/guardians in-tune with their students performance and
progress, I will be providing a newsletter communication every three weeks via e-mail.

Classroom Procedures

Entering class:
After you walk in the door, turn in any homework assignments that are due.
If it is the beginning of the week, ensure you pick up the agenda for the week. If it

Procedures for Instruction

Collaborative Group Work

I value collaborative learning environments, as I feel it is important that our class members
understand we are all in this together. When collaborating with our teams:

We are all responsible for equal contributions.

To keep individual input equal, I will assign each group member a role.
A portion of each collaborative grade will reflect your peers feedback on your
contributions towards the assigned role.
Rely on your partners. If you have a question or need assistance, lean on your
shoulder partner for coaching.

8
Cultivating Social Skills
From day #1, we will begin working building and maintaining professional relationships with
those in our class, school, and community. In a world where we are so connected by technology,
it is more important than ever to ensure students have learned effective, positive social skills. In
this class, we will further develop our social skills via technology; however, the 4 keys to respect
below will need to be remembered at all times when cultivating relationships or networking:

Taking a Test

Clear desk completely except for a pen/pencil or computer (depending on type of

test).
Teacher will provide other test materials and extras will be available in the supply
bank.
Test taking (unless told otherwise) is the work of your own.
a. No talking.
b. No cheating.
If you have a question, the teacher will respond to you by quietly raising your
hand.

Correct Test Taking Incorrect Test Taking____

9
Error Correction

I give students an opportunity to correct some assignments through the year, but there are steps
associated with error correction. For these assignments:

Teacher will personally hand back corrected work to each student.

Revise and edit work for added points.
Corrections are due in the file at the beginning of the next class.

Procedures for Teacher

Student Feedback:

Ensure multiple assessments are given during a unit as a proactive approach to

decreasing negative feedback about coursework or teacher.
Always respond to student feedback with showing appreciation for feedback and assist
accordingly.
Every semester, students are encouraged to provide feedback by completing a teacher
survey via SurveyMonkey.

New Student Orientation:

For new students, it is our job to ensure they are welcomed into our community and classrooms
with open arms. In an effort to ensure this transition to our classroom is flawless, we will do the
following:
Folders containing classroom procedures and expectations are available for new
classmates.
Ensure new student has all necessary supplies and refer to the supply bank if
supplies are needed.
The classroom/period supervisor will be assigned to introduce the student to the
class and help this student get acquainted with our classroom and members and
is enthusiastic to help new student as needed.
Remind all students on cultivating social skills procedure.

Classroom Visitors:

Safety is key. In our classroom, the door automatically locks when the door is closed. If you hear
a knock at the door:
Students will remain seated unless instructed otherwise.

10
Teacher will respond to knock, unless it is a team member returning from a restroom
break. From that point, the classroom supervisor or team manager can open the door to
let teammate in.
Volunteers/presenters will advise teacher no later than 3 days before planned arrival.
Have all outside visitors refer to school policy and check in to front desk upon arrival.
Prior to any volunteers/presenters that speak to our class, remind students of the 4 keys
to respect.

Substitute Teachers:

The teacher will:

Have a lesson plan prepared and left on desk daily in the event of an unexpected event
where a substitute teacher is needed.
Have materials easily accessible at all times.
Have the elected classroom/period supervisor be the helper if the substitute teacher
has any questions.
Leave contact information for the substitute to reach teacher if the period supervisor
cannot help.
Have a folder labeled Substitute Teacher to include the school handbook, daily
schedules, as well as classroom policies and procedures.

Home and School Connection:

Prior to the first day, teacher will send out the first newsletter communication to parents.
Prior to the first day, each parent/guardian will receive an initial phone contact call from
teacher to welcome the student to class.
Ensure all parents have all contact information: e-mail, teachers number, schools
contact, etc.
Continue to maintain online profiles throughout the year.

Technology in the Classroom:

11
Technology will be implemented significantly in the business/finance course. Following the first
day of classes, the teacher will have/allow the students:
Create a Google+/school e-mail account.
Create a professional LinkedIn account with e-mail account.
Bring cell phones to class, but they must be on silent, as this will be monitored.
Please note: Test days are treated differently in regards to cell phones. Cell phones will be
collected by the teacher during testing and returned at the end of the period.
Provide a completed online security awareness training report from KnowBe4.
Review the Internet Safety Rules handout together in class.
