1. Anak lelaki saya tidak pernah mengangkat telepon genggamnya ketika saya
meneleponnya, saya selalu harus mengirimkannya pesan singkat (SMS).

Do you know anyone who never answers their phone?
= Yes, I have a friend that never answers her phone, because her phones speaker is
broken so even though she answers the phone, she wont hear anything. Thats why
she never answers her phone.

Do you text or phone more? Why?


= No, because now we are in digital era. Everything uses internet. It means we dont
need to text or phone anymore because we can replace phone call with video call and
we can replace text with chatting with Internet. Video call and chatting is easier and
cheaper than text or phone call.

Do you know anywhere that often puts you on hold?


= In the hotel usually when the staff tells to wait if we ask for something and in the
office when we want to speak with a particular person, the staff usually puts us on
hold.

Why might you get cut off during a phone call?


= Because of the bad signal or because I have used all my billing phone (pulsa).

Do you know anywhere with bad coverage?


= In the villages and forests.

Have you ever hung up on anyone? Why?


= Yes, because at that time my lecturer already entered the class so I need to hung up
the phone.

Choose one of the short news stories about phones and emergency from the book and
then retell it with your own words.
There was an unfortunate incident that happened to Matthew Stevens, 23 years old.
He got bitten by one of the most poisonous spiders in the world, the Brazilian wandering
spider. He got bitten by the spider when he was cleaning the kitchen in a pub in south-west
England. The spider maybe came into Britain in a box of bananas.
Mr. Stevens took a photo of the 12-centimetre spider with his mobile phone after the
incident and then came home even though his hand is swelling like a balloon. At home, he
fainted with breathing troubles and had to take to the hospital immediately. Luckily, he
could show the picture of the spider from his mobile phone. So the photo was sent to a
university to be identified the species of spider and a cure for the poison.

A. Read the first sentence of each of the stories below. Discuss your ideas about the
answers to the question. Dont read the full stories yet.
1. A police force has launched a campaign against misuse of the emergency phone
number.
a. Whats the emergency number?
= The emergency number is 999.
b. How are the people misusing the number?
= By requesting unnecessary things like someone wanting a ride home, a man
complaining about his TV not working, two people who reported lost cats, and
also accidentally dialled 999 number by young children.
c. What things are part of their campaign?
= They are sending leaflets (brochures or pamphlets) to houses to explain the
problem and have introduced 80 fines for those who make improper calls.

2. A doctor in Australia has saved the life of a young boy using a domestic drill and a
mobile phone.
a. What happened to the boy?
= He fell off from his bicycle and hit his head.
b. What did the doctor use the drill for--and why a domestic one?
= The doctor used it to make a hole in the boys head in order to do the
operation.
c. Why did he need the mobile phone?
= Because he needed the mobile phone to call his colleague in Melbourne to
explain where and how to make a hole because he had never done that kind of
operation before.
3. A chef has saved his own life, thanks to the photo of a rare spider that he too with his
mobile phone.
a. Where was the man?
= He was cleaning in the kitchen.
b. What happened to him?
= He got bitten by a most poisonous spider in the world.
c. What was the spider like?
= The spider was 12 centimetres long.
d. How did the photo save his life?
= The photo that he took was sent to a university to be identified the species of
spider so that they can find a cure for the poison.

C. Discuss what the words in bold in the stories mean.


Reported : To give an account or representation of in words.
Fines : Money extracted as a penalty.
Swelling : Something that bulges out or is protuberant or projects
from its surroundings
Rushed : Act or move at high speed.
Transferred : Move someone from one place to another.
Despite : Regardless of, in defiance of.
Collapsed : Fall or become unconscious due to fatigue, illness, or a
sudden attack
Species : A specific kind of something.

F: How was your day?
D: Quite strain, actually!
F: Really? What happened?
D: I just operated a boy today.
F: So what? You are a doctor, you must be get used to it.
D: The problem is, I had never done an operation which required me to make a hole
in someones head before. And I had only a normal household drill to do that
operation to the boy!
F: So how was it? How did you make it?
D: I phoned a colleague in Melbourne to explain where and how to make a hole.
F: Wow! Youre amazing! And you have saved that boys life. You really are a hero!
D: Thats just part of my job.

M: Quite scary, actually!

number by young child.
F: Wow! You must be really patient.
O: Its okay. The police are handling this. They are sending leaflets (brochures) to
houses to explain the problem and have introduced 80 fines for those making
improper calls.
