SUBJECT: Adopt a resolution authorizing a Sunset Center Free Theater Day for the Carmel
International Film Festival on Thursday, October 19, 2017.

RECOMMENDATION

Adopt a resolution authorizing a Sunset Center Free Theater Day for the Carmel International Film Festival on
Thursday, October 19, 2017.

BACKGROUND / SUMMARY

The Citys contract with Sunset Cultural Center (SCC), adopted by the City Council on June 6, 2017 and effective
July 1, 2017, stipulates that the City shall have the right to use the Sunset Center theater, lobby access and
dressing rooms for up to twelve (12) full days (Free Theater Days) each fiscal year without charge, provided
that the spaces have not already been committed by SCC to rental customers.

The Carmel International Film Festival, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is requesting one of the Citys
Free Theater Days on Thursday, October 19, 2017. The Film Festival, which features independent films and
contemporary art, is now in its ninth year.

Sunset Center is the events largest venue; granting a free use day of the Sunset Center Theater and Lobby
will help the event organizers offset the rental cost of the facility. The Film Festival has already secured the
theater and lobby for the requested dates.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact.

PRIOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION

The City Council granted Sunset Center Free Theater days to the Carmel International Film Festival in 2009,
2010, 2012, 2013, and 2016.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA AUTHORIZING A

SUNSET CENTER FREE THEATER DAY FOR THE CARMEL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ON
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2017

WHEREAS the Citys contract with Sunset Cultural Center (SCC), adopted by the City Council on June

WHEREAS the Carmel International Film Festival, a non-profit organization, has requested one Free

WHEREAS Sunset Center is the Carmel International Film Festivals largest event venue and granting
a free use day of the Sunset Center Theater and Lobby will help the event organizers offset the rental cost of
the facility.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-
THE-SEA DOES HEREBY:

Authorize a Sunset Center Free Theater Day for the Carmel International Film Festival on Thursday,
October 19, 2017.

PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA this

Dear Chip,

The Carmel International Film Festival, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization, will be

holding our 9th annual film festival October 18-22 throughout Carmel-by-the-Sea
with the Sunset Center serving as our largest venue. In the past the City has been
extremely generous in providing the film festival with a free day, w hich helps to off
set the rental cost of the facility. We would like to formally request the free day
usage again this year. u
