MASTER THESIS OR DISSERTATION PROPOSAL

Proposed Topic: The Sense of Self-concept and Self-esteem of Physically Abused

Filipino Women after undergoing intervention

About the Study:

As an individual progress there are numerous factors to be considered that can

affect ones growth. One of which was the environment that might add stressors,

challenges, or opportunities that can help uplift or degrade ones personal outlook in life.

Considering those, it is proved that having positive self-concept and high self-esteem

are one of the keys on having better chances for a happy and satisfying adulthood.

However, not all can surpass the challenges of life in an ideal way and one of the many

reasons behind this is the abusive behaviors manifested by the people on their

environment. Abuse can come in many forms verbal, physical, sexual, or emotional.

Many abusive relationships have more than one type of abuse, and none of them

should be tolerated. And in order to give aid to the victims there are lots of centers

established and interventions created by researchers that can help victims.

Here in the Philippines, the (1)2008 National Demographic and Health Survey

(NDHS) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) introduced the "Women

Safety Module" revealed that one in five women aged 15-49 has experienced physical

violence since age 15; 14.4 percent of married women have experienced physical

abuse from their husbands; and more than one-third (37%) of separated or widowed

women have experienced physical violence, implying that domestic violence could be

the reason for separation or annulment.

In addition, given that there are different forms of abuse, this study will focus on

physical abuse on Filipino Women aging from 15 to 30 years old. And by saying

physical abuse this study will refer to the situation when someone physically hurts you,

such as by hitting you or throwing something at you. Moreover, one of the aims of this

study is to identify if after entering these centers and participating different interventions

are there significant changes on the way they view themselves and how they perceive

the world. Somehow, did that help them enhancing their negative self-concepts into

positive ones and their low self-esteems into high one? This study aims to identify the

transition of their self-concept and self-esteem before and after undergoing an

intervention.

This proposed study will be conducted in partnership with some Non-

Government Organizations (NGOs) concerned with same matters. Administering

standardized tests related to evaluating their self-concept and self-esteem will be a

necessary action for this study. Furthermore, use of statistical treatment to properly

assess and describe the result of the study is also necessary. While having a small

interview with some of the participants might be conducted if needed for stronger

justification of the results. Thus, this is still a proposal and can be a subject to further

improvement.
