As a student, my primary and secondary school years were very difficult.

I
encountered great difficulty with Math, Reading and Spelling. During my primary
school years Friday's were the worst day for me because it meant my licks was
sure. This has a great impact on the way in which I looked at education. As a
result of my experiences, I was inclined to become a teacher to offer students
an alternative to what I experienced. For every student that walks into my
classroom I want to see them excel at what they can do best. However I will also
love to see them improve on the skills that they are not as strong in. It is my intent
for each individual student to explore all that they have to offer and work on
being the best they can be. My students will be given the opportunity to explore
their fullest potential.
As an educator my objectives for each student that comes into contact
with me is for them to obtain 21st century skills that they will be able to
contribute to society in a positive way. They are to become flexible thinkers,
remain open to learning continuously and to develop a sense of determination
and persistence. My students are to understand the benefits of thinking about
their thinking, being a reflective individual. This mindset will only enhance their
ability to achieve their goals and become successful individuals in whichever
path they have chosen.
As an educator I aspire to be a guide on the side and not a sage on the
stage. I subscribe to the concept where students must become active
participants for learning to take place. With this in mind I strive to maintain an
environment that encourages and facilitate hands on activities with a strong
emphasis on collaboration and interaction. Learners are encouraged to work
interdependently.
To achieve my goals and objectives I allow the students to have a sense
of community within the classroom. They are given the opportunity to be an
individual and be able to express their thoughts through actions and ideas.
Within the learning environment it is important to note that mistakes are
encouraged and this is based on the premise that learning is about the process
and not the product.
Within the learning environment the students are allowed to progress from
the known to the unknown. This is done in stages based on the student's
progression using the Concrete Pictorial Abstract Approach (CPA). Instruction is
conducted using the multisensory approach, as to facilitate the various learning
styles within the classroom environment. It is my goal to grow with each student
from where they are and to have a common destination between facilitator
and student. This will only be achieved if I am open to continuous and reflective
learning.
