1.GENERATOR GAS DRYING:

Hydrogen gas is used in the generators as coolant. This requires operation of some drives such as heater,
drier fan and a CO2 flash evaporator. These are realised in

- Sub loop control CO2 flash evaporator (MKG71 EE001)

1.1 Task of Sub loop Control CO2 Flash Evaporator :

As a precaution against formation of explosive mixtures, neither air should be directly replaced with H2
during generator filling nor H2 should be replaced directly with air during the purging procedure. In both the
events, CO2 is used as a buffer gas, which is expanded in a CO2 flash evaporator. A heater is provided to
prevent freezing of CO2 in the flash evaporator.

This sub loop control when switched ON has the task of issuing commands to the CO2 flash evaporator
(MKG71 AH001). The CO2 flash evaporator is switched ON if the temperature is less than 145 Degree
Celsius. There is a protection OFF command acting on the CO2 flash evaporator if the temperature of the
evaporator is more than 150 Degree Celsius. The SLC of flash evaporator is switched on manually from
HMI. It has no SGC.

1.2 Task of Gas Drier :

This is realised by manual operation of 'GAS DRIER-1 or GAS DRIER-2.

MKG69 AH001
GAS DRIER-1
MKG69 AH011
GAS DRIER-2

These drives can be switched ON and OFF manually. The gas drier 1 (or 2) starts soon after switching ON
manually from MMI, console or local Push Button. During process, if Gas drier-1 (or 2) trips, Operator will
get alarm and he has to switch ON another gas drier manually. Auto-change over is not envisaged as
opening and closing of valves involved in process. Operator will also get alarms, if both gas drier are ON.
Local On/ Off Push Buttons and local indications for drier ON / OFF / Fault are available at Gas Drier also.

1.3 Task of Cold Gas Temp Control Valve :

The cold gas temp control valve has the task of maintaining the cold gas temperature inside the generator at
preset value The temp control valve is a motorized valve with 4-20 mA position feedback to the controller.
The opening/closing pulses are given internally in the actuator to the thyristorized modules for bi-directional
operation of the motor. The fast feedback signal is provided as additional input to take care of the fast
changes in operating temperature. There is also provision of full opening of the valve in event of cold gas
inlet temperature rising above 55 degree C.

2.GENERATOR BEARING EXHAUST FAN (FUNCTIONAL UNIT : YMKQ10) :

This is realised in the sub loop control 'Bearing Exhaust Fan (MKQ00 EE001).

MKQ00 EE001
SLC BEARING EXHAUST FAN

MKQ01 AN001
BEARING EXHAUST FAN 1
MKQ02 AN001
BEARING EXHAUST FAN 2

The sub loop control, when switched ON has the task of issuing commands to bearing exhaust fans
operation. The fan 1 starts automatically soon after switching ON of the SLC (by SGC also). During
process, if fan-1 (MKQ01AN001) tripped, then the stand by fan i.e. fan-2 (MKQ02AN001) is switched ON
automatically without any time delay. In event fan 2 is running and tripped, fan-1 starts automatically
without any time delay.

For stopping of the fans during shutdown or for other reasons, the SLC of the Bearing exhaust fan
automatically switched OFF.

3.GENERATOR SEAL OIL SYSTEM

Shaft seals supplied with pressurised seal oil are provided to prevent H2 losses at the shaft. The shaft seals
are supplied with AC/ DC seal oil pumps consisting of two nos. of AC seal oil pumps, one no of emergency
DC seal oil pump and two nos. of seal oil vacuum pumps. The controls of the pumps are realised in the
subloop control (SLC) of seal oil pumps (MKW10EE001). There is a subgroup control (SGC) MKY01EC001
in MMI for ensuring integrated switching ON of the SLCs required for normal operation after manual
switching ON of one seal oil pump and one bearing exhaust fan from console insert or MMI. There is option
of starting drives through common SGC in MMI or through individual SLCs on console /MMI. However for
protection inadvertent for switching off of SLC for DC SOP, gas pressure in generator casing P< 0.2 Kg/Cm2
Interlock is provided.

The subloop control, when switched ON has the task of issuing commands to seal oil pumps. The pump 1
starts automatically soon after switching ON of the SLC. During process, if pump 1 tripped or oil pressure in
the line of selected pump (MKW11APOO1) is less than a preset value, then the standby pump 2
(MKW12AP001) is switched automatically (without any delay on tripping and after preset delay on pressure
low). In event pump 2 is running and tripped or develops lesser pressure than pump 1 starts automatically
(without any delay on tripping and after preset delay on pressure low).

The standby pump may be stopped manually if reasons of fall of the pressure are identified. For stopping of
the pumps during shutdown or for other reasons, the SLC has to be switched OFF and the running pump
has to be stopped manually from MMI/Control tiles. Provision to Start/ Stop SO motors locally is also
provided.

The DC seal oil pumps subloop control when switched ON has the task of issuing commands to DC seal oil
pump (MKW13AP001). DC seal oil pump is switched ON automatically, when either seal oil pumps 1 and 2
are OFF or if the discharge oil pressures of both pumps are less than a preset minimum value. Once SLC of
DC SOP is Switched ON, same cannot be switched off until pressure in generator casing is less than preset
value. This provides extra protection for seal oil system.

An alarm is provided to switch OFF manually the DC seal oil pump after 60 seconds, if pump 1 or 2 starts
running or if the respective discharge pressure becomes more than the preset minimum value.

Besides AC/ DC seal oil pumps, there are two seal oil vacuum pumps. To make same pump ON and OFF
between required pressure, selection is provided in this case only. After manual selection of vacuum pump-
1, the sub loop control also switches ON seal oil vacuum pump 1 (MKW11AN001). This pump will switch
ON and OFF automatically between required pressure( -0.4 & -0.65Kg/cm2). During process, if vacuum in
vacuum tank does not build above minimum preset pressure (-0.4Kg/cm2), then the 2nd vacuum pump
(MKW12AN001) starts automatically and vice versa. If there is a failure of the running vacuum pump, the
other pump picks up automatically. There is provision to Start/ Stop Vacuum pumps locally.

4.GENERATOR MAIN EXCITER

This functional unit prevents the formation of moisture condense inside the exciter when the turbo generator
set is at standstill or on turning gear.

The drier dehumidifies the air within the exciter enclosure and is supported in its function by the heater,
which is installed at the exciter base frame. This is realised in the subloop control Air Drier (MKC71 EE001).

This subloop control, when switched ON has the task of issuing commands to air drier (MKC71 AT001) and
exciter shutdown heater (MKC71 AH001 to 03).
When the speed of the turbine is less than 210 rpm, air drier is switched ON. Air drier is switched OFF when
the turbine speed exceeds 240 rpm & heater is OFF.

Exciter shutdown heater is switched ON when air drier is ON and the exciter cold air temperature is less
than 40 degree Cel & Turbine speed is less than 210rpm. When either the turbine speed is more than 240
rpm or exciter cold air temperature is more than 50 Degree Celsius, the exciter shutdown heater is switched
OFF. There is also a protection OFF command that acts on exciter shutdown heater when the exciter cold
air temperature exceeds 90 Degree Celsius or air drier is OFF.

5.MECHANICAL GENERATOR PROTECTION (FUNCTIONAL UNIT : YMKY20) :

This functional unit initiates turbine tripping based on 2 out of 3 principle with functional checking feature on
any of the following faulty/alarming conditions. In the event of changeover to 1 out of 2 logic due to fault in a
particular sensor, discrepancy signal is automatically generated for CRT alarm.
