changed o v e r t h e y e a r s a s e a c h c o m m u n i t y h a s e v o l v e d . R e s e a r c h i n g t h e h i s t o r y o f
the S t . M a r y ' s C o u n t y F a i r h a s b e e n a n o n g o i n g e n d e a v o r b y t h e P u b l i c a t i o n ' s

L i f e o n a f a r m h a s n e v e r b e e n e a s y. A t t h e f i r s t c r a c k o f dawn, f e e t t o u c h

d a y. N o t a l l i s h a r d w o r k a n d l a b o r o n t h e f a r m , h o w e v e r . W a t c h i n g t h e s p r i n g
lambs s p r i n t a c r o s s t h e b l u e - g r e e n r y e g r a s s a s r o b i n s r u n t h e i r s h o r t l i t t l e

Farm f a m i l i e s h a v e a l w a y s k n o w n t h i s s e n s e o f f r e e d o m a n d j o y t h a t c o m e s
from b e i n g i n d e p e n d e n t a n d l i v i n g c l o s e t o t h e l a n d . T h e r e i s a s e r e n i t y t h a t
boosts t h e s p i r i t a n d calms t h e s o u l . I t i s n o wonder t h a t f a r m f a m i l i e s have
for generations f o u g h t hard and l o n g t o maintain t h i s l i f e s t y l e .
I t i s becoming i n c r e a s i n g l y h a r d e r , h o w e v e r, f o r t h e f a m i l y f a r m t o m a i n t a i n
i t s own. D r a s t i c i n c r e a s e s i n p r i c e s o f c h e m i c a l s , f e r t i l i z e r s , e q u i p m e n t , a n d
l a b o r a l o n g w i t h c o m p e t i t i o n f r o m f o r e i g n m a r k e t s a r e f o r c i n g many f a m i l y f a r m s
out o f b u s i n e s s o r c a u s i n g t h e m t o t a k e o n second j o b s t o m a k e e n d s m e e t . T h e

Leonard H a l l w a s f o u n d e d i n 1 9 0 9 a n d b y 1 9 1 4 - 1 9 1 5 a l r e a d y h a d i n p l a c e t h e
following aims:

i n t r a - s t a t e communication. A g r i c u l t u r a l agents were a s s i g n e d t o e a c h county i n
order t o h e l p f a r m s m e c h a n i z e t h e i r f a r m s and show them d i v e r s i f i e d t e c h n i q u e s
f o r f a r m i n g . J u l i u s Johnson was t h e e x t e n s i o n a g e n t f r o m 1 9 3 2 t o 1 9 5 9 , d u r i n g
which t i m e t h e o f f i c i a l S t . M a r y ' s C o u n t y F a i r w a s f o u n d e d , a span o f t w e n t y -
seven y e a r s , " a n d h e w a s t h e o n l y e x t e n s i o n a g e n t w i t h o u t a c o l l e g e d e g r e e - - a
self-educated man," s a y s h i s s o n , Bernard Johnson, who has been a c t i v e w i t h t h e

The g r o w t h o f i n d u s t r y a n d t e c h n o l o g y d u e t o c o n t r a c t o r s a f f i l i a t e d w i t h t h e
Patuxent R i v e r N a v a l A i r S t a t i o n , a n d t h e g r o w t h o f s m a l l businesses a s a r e s u l t ,
have h a d a l a r g e i m p a c t o n t h e e x p a n s i o n o f u r b a n d e v e l o p m e n t i n t h e c o u n t y . I t
is possible t h a t without t h e Naval A i r S t a t i o n , S t . Mary's C o u n t y ' s main source
of income w o u l d s t i l l b e a g r i c u l t u r e a n d seafood. P a x R i v e r and i t s v a r i o u s
m i l i t a r y r e l a t e d i n d u s t r i e s around t h e t r i - c o u n t y area a r e t h e s o l e r e a s o n s f o r
t h i s c o u n t y ' s r a p i d expansion coupled w i t h t h e f a c t t h a t people a r e moving t o t h e

Economics. D e v e l o p m e n t , g r o w t h a n d e x p a n s i o n a r e a m a j o r c o n t r i b u t i n g f a c t o r
added t o t h e c o m p e t i t i v e f o r e i g n m a r k e t f o r f a r m p r o d u c t s . T h i s u r b a n i z a t i o n h a s
i t s p o s i t i v e a n d n e g a t i v e e f f e c t s . M a n y people f e e l t h a t t h e development i s a
good t h i n g f o r i t h a s b r o u g h t a h i g h e r l e v e l o f e c o n o m y t o t h e a r e a . H o w e v e r ,
t h i s u r b a n i z a t i o n i s a l s o t a k i n g i t s t o l l . T h e a g r i c u l t u r a l i n d u s t r y and water
industry i s s l o w l y f a d i n g . T h e market value f o r a g r i c u l t u r a l p r o d u c t s s o l d has
dropped f r o m $ 2 2 , 5 1 7 , 0 0 0 i n 1 9 8 2 t o $ 1 3 , 2 7 1 , 0 0 0 i n 1 9 8 7 , a c c o r d i n g t o t h e 1 9 7 4 -

the f a c t t h a t o v e r t h e l a s t f e w y e a r s , a d r o u g h t s i t u a t i o n h a s h u r t t h e c r o p

integration in 60s. The Black Fair was first held on the grounds of the Cardinal Gibbons
High School then it was moved to Loveville and eventually to the current fairgrounds.
