Bowls Club Pavilion Opened in Time for the New Season

May 23rd saw the official opening of the new Bowls Club pavilion, a
project that has been eighteen months in the making. It was provi-
sionally expected to reach completion in autumn 2016 but took a little
longer. However, the result has certainly been worth waiting for and
is in time for the new season.
At the opening ceremony Peter Wadham, who has led the project
from start to finish, welcomed everyone present and thanked all those who had helped
make it happen. At the outset, Great Massingham Parish Council had generously agreed
to match fund the project with the Bowls Clubs own fund raising. The Club obtained a
grant from Norfolk Community Foundation and together with fundraising by club mem-
bers & non-members, a contribution from the Village Hall Trustees and the 50% matched
funding from the Parish Council, the target amount was achieved.
With speeches and the ceremony complete, everyone retired for drinks in the Village
Hall bar. All agreed that the pavilion has enhanced the facilities at the Village Hall and,
most importantly, has provided a more suitable home for the bowls club. All members
expect it to serve them well in the years to come. Thank you, Peter, for a great result.

Present at the opening from left to right: Phil Ward (Chair of Village Hall trustees), Robin Arbenz (Hall
trustee), Colin Whitmore (Bowls Club member), Peter Wadham (Chair of Bowls Club), Vic Cross (Chair
of Parish Council), Martin Matthews (Secretary of Bowls Club), Liz Foster ( Parish Councillor) & Arthur
Allen ( Hall trustee) and several other Bowls Club members not in the picture.

Many thanks also to: The Parish Council and the Village Hall trustees, to Arthur Allen and
Rob Burton with assisting with the planning application, to Colin Whitmore for initial help
with the specification, installing seating and carpet and more, to Bob Nash for assistance
with various tasks to complete the project, setting up the garden area and for doing a superb
job over the past three years tending the greens, to Irene Allen as treasurer of the Social
Club and John Setford as Bowls Club treasurer, to Alison Gagen and Mel Whitmore for
raising around 1,500 between them, to all the Bowls club members who donated prizes for
the bingo and manned the tables for the Race Night organised by Malcolm Hipkin and all
the members who were on the wheelbarrows to move the readymix and, finally, thanks to Vic
Cross for funding the reception drinks. All of you played your part to help make this happen.

Gert & Daisy.... .... Another month gone! Toime dont harf fly, dont it?
That seem ages since we wus on holiday but on thother hand that seem loike yesty. The

This month we hev hatches, matches & despatches - better git them owt of the way fust.
Ben Morton and his woife hed a little girl and they hev called her Cici not a Norfolk

Congratulations also ter Becki Fanneran on her wedding ter Daniel Pickard in May.
Apparently the Village Hall hed bin decorated inside sew bootiful it wus unrecognisable.
Daisy is very sad to report the death of her neighbour, Marshall Tilley. He passed away
peacefully in Rebecca Court Care Home on 19 th June - a true gentleman and very grateful
for everything anyone did for him. Until recently he lived in Acorn Cottage which is where
Daisy first lived in the village. His funeral is at Mintlyn on July 5th at 1.45pm.
On a happier note Gert and Bert really enjoyed their trip ter see Mrs Brown. That wus
a compilation of bits from their TV shows and, of course, very funny. Gert hed her spe-
cial birthday celebration at The Fox in Weasenham and, apart from the family, Daisy
and Sid wus invited. Gert now has a taste fer Jaeger bombs so the Irish holiday cud be
very interesting ken yew put them in Guinness? Daisy did NOT partake! Gert wud like
ter thank everywun fer cards and presents. She hed sum munny sew she hev bort a shed
that she and Daisy ken hide in loike the men do!
Daisy also hed her birthday and she and her mum went ter The Fox too. Sid didnt but
thas another story. Happy Birthday wishes also ter Derrick Rae wholl be 90 in July.
We would like to send Get Well wishes to Ant Robinson who has been in hospital for a
while now. We hope we will see him back on his little buggy in the not - too - distant future.
We awl went ter the Bowls Club Quiz on 24th June. We dint win but hed a lorra lorra

Sids book is almost sold owt sew if yew are thinking of gitting one yewd better hurry
up. He hev hed gud reviews so far.
Daisys son-in-law wus able ter show off his tractors on Sunday 18 th June in the Tractor

School News.. Over to our budding school reporters to tell us about their latest venture.

HORSTEAD RESIDENTIAL VISIT 2017

A Head Teachers View
In May the Great Massingham and Harpley C
of E Schools Federation KS2 pupils went on a
residential visit to the Horstead Centre near
Coltishall. Fifty-one year 3, 4, 5 & 6 pupils from
both schools went on the visit which lasted for
three days and two nights although it felt much
longer to the adults! The children from both
federation schools were put into Activity Teams
for the day time and dormitory teams for night-times with designated staff members. Due
to our termly federation days & weekly swap days where
the KS2 children work across both schools the children were
familiar with all the adults supporting the visit.
All activities at the centre are run by fully qualified coaches
and safety briefings and equipment checks were carried out
with the children and school staff at the start of every activi-
ty session. Activities selected were Bushcraft, Canoeing,
Crate-Stacking, Archery and the Climbing Tower & Zip-
Wire. Children and adults alike thoroughly enjoyed all the
experiences and threw themselves into each activity (quite
literally on the zip-wire!). The school also organised
activities which included creating a Wooden Spoon Team,
devising a team song or rap for the bonfire evening and making a stained glass window
from card and film to represent the values each team showed during the visit. These were
taken to the church on the last morning where groups presented a short reflection of the
visit. The windows were then blessed by the local rector and donated to the church. While
they might not have matched the stained glass already present in the church for crafts-
manship they were almost certainly made with greater enthusiasm!
On the first evening the centre ran a night walk for everyone after dinner. (See Rubys,
Hannahs & Bryns accounts opposite). The children were so excited that very little wild-
life was seen or heard over their chatter but we knew they were enjoying the experience
from the volume levels! Our special thanks to The Mallard for sponsoring this activity.
On the second evening we had a Campfire with silly songs, stories and toasted marshmal-
lows. This was enhanced by team songs and raps scored
strictly style by the school staff with lots of SEVENS! and
the odd Ten from Len especially for the staff rap!
The visit was brilliantly organised by Mrs Sarah Maloney,
senior teacher at Harpley and fantastically well supported by
all the adults who went along. We are so lucky to have such
committed staff in the Federation who volunteered to come
along and give up their own time. Long days & even longer
nights! I am very grateful to all.
Thanks also must go to the Parents and Friends Associations of both schools who each
generously sponsored an activity.
It was the first Federation residential visit so it was difficult to predict how it would go.
However, I am thrilled to say that it was hugely successful and we have booked again for
2019.The childrens behaviour was exemplary and they all gained so much from the ac-
tivities, teamwork and independence skills they experienced. At the end of the visit I felt
immensely proud of all the children, extremely grateful to all the staff but most of all very
VERY tired! Ann Beardall, Head Teacher

The Horstead Nightwalk.. As part of our Federation residential visit to Horstead,
we went on the Nightwalk, a walk through the countryside nearby. Two members of
the team came with us, one walked at the front - the other at the back. Beginning
on the edge of the residential site and lasting for approximately two hours, it was a
great way to enjoy nature and yourself. Although it wasnt dark and we would have
liked it to go on for longer it was interesting, different and like nothing weve ever done
before. The walk led us past many golden fields and hills of gorse that gave a
peaceful feeling and calm nature. Everyone loved the Shetland Ponies that were in the
fields nearby, the time to talk to their friends and the gorgeous scenery. On the return
journey, the sunset glittered on the horizon.
This all took place on Monday night which made all of us excited for the rest of our
adventure there. However, after all that walking, we were still ready for more fun
once back at our base! We loved the whole trip and the walk was a great part of it.
By Ruby & Hannah Y6 (Great Massingham)

Horstead 21st May. We left Harpley at 10.30 am. The journey on the coach was fun.
The dorm I stayed in was called Rollesby. Our teacher for the dorm was Mrs B. I shared
the dorm with Caleb, Archie, Chris, and Leon. In my activities group, our teachers were
Mrs Farley and Mr Heazel. The other people were Hannah, Aimee, Charlie and Jake from
Massingham and Chris, Leon, Ralph, Skye and Molly from Harpley and me!
We had five activities to do over the three days. The activities were Canoeing, Archery,
Crate Stack, Bush Craft and Tower. My most favourite activity was crate stack, mainly
because you have to do a lot of teamwork, like putting crates on to keep balanced with
your partner.
On both nights we did something special. The first night it was a night walk through the
countryside of Norfolk. We must have walked at least 4 6 miles that night and we did a
lot of climbing, as well, over stiles.
The bonfire was really fun. We got to tell ghost stories, sing songs and even perform our
own songs and raps. Then, all of a sudden, the teachers got up to sing their song which we
didnt know about. Also, they cheated with their scores!
I was proud of sleeping away from home with no relatives nearby. I didnt expect the zip-
wire to be so high. By Bryn Evans Y6 (Harpley)

THE PARISH COUNCIL AGM - CHAIRMANS REPORT
The AGM was held on Monday 15th May. Below is the Chairmans Report which gives
a very clear summary of the year 2016 to 2017. More details of the meeting, next issue.
Firstly, I would like to record my thanks to my fellow Parish councillors whose regular
attendance at scheduled meetings has enabled Council business to run smoothly.
We have also been well served by both our County Councillor and Borough Councillor.
They have attended most meetings providing valuable help and advice and keeping us
informed of County and Borough activities. I particularly thank County Councillor John
Dobson who has retired after several years. He has competently served the parish for
many years and always shown considerable interest in matters pertaining to Great
Massingham. We wish him well and hope he has a long and happy retirement.
Cuts in Government spending are having an increasing effect on the level of service we
receive from local councils and we have engaged in considerable correspondence to
ensure services we are entitled to continue.
Concern expressed about the state of some of the footways in the village has been re-
ported to Norfolk County Councils highways department but, as yet, there has not been
a response. Another area of concern is a problem of cars parked on footpaths, making it
very difficult for pedestrians, especially infirm or disabled people, to access local ser-
vices. This has also been reported. We ask Parishioners to keep telling us about any inci-
dents so we can put further pressure on the relevant authorities.
The Mike Tilbury Award was introduced this year in memory of our late Borough
Councillor and parishioner. The award is to recognise an individuals outstanding volun-
tary contribution to Village life. In considering nominees for the award the process illu-
minated the tremendous amount of voluntary activity by numerous individuals and
groups that goes on all the time. Many thanks to so many who bring credit to the village.
The playpark promised in last years Annual Report has been completed. Although a
funding application was unsuccessful the Parish Council released its contribution of fifty
thousand pounds to fully fund the first stage of the plan. The second phase is now totally
dependent on outside funding.
Detailed discussions have taken place with the Village Hall trustees regarding planned
refurbishment of the Hall and the Parish Council has Pledged one hundred thousand
pounds towards the project. We understand it will not be too long before their applica-
tion for Lottery and other funding is submitted. The funds released by the Council are
those that were ring-fenced in earlier years for Village projects.
Following the work last year on the Malthouse pond, in Weasenham Road, further work
was carried out to the pond outside Parsonage Farm, on the same road. A complaint by a
local resident highlighted a misunderstanding between the Parish and Borough Council
regarding Conservation Areas and Tree Preservation. This has been resolved and the
work completed as planned.
This year has seen the passing of several established village residents, changing forever
the makeup of the community. They will be sadly missed. Newer residents now play an
increasing role in all activities and bring a fresh impetus to everyday life. There is a real
need to find ways to enable young families to remain in the village. Further provision of
affordable and social housing goes some way to encourage young couples but the siting
of areas for such schemes often meets with local opposition and this requires careful
consideration. I am certain we will solve these issues. The planning authority has the
final say but the parish can make comment and try to influence their decisions.
As a Village, Great Massingham stands proud amongst its neighbours and I am hon-
oured to have served as chairman. I feel proud that our Village is free from so many of
the social problems that blight numerous others. Vic Cross, Chairman, May 2017

Message To All Parishioners
Religion and Politics Dont Mix! So some would say. Are they right?
Politics and religion are both important topics more important than most topics in our
lives much more important than sport and even the good old British weather! However,
they can both be controversial and generate different beliefs and feelings and so they are
sensitive topics to talk about. Its said that to bring either into conversation in a crowded
room will create an argument mention both together and theres likely to be a brawl!
It could be said that religion deals with eternal things, spiritual things, things not of this
world whereas politics is very much in the world dealing with the stuff of government,
law and order, pot holes in the road, taxes, welfare, safety and protection. So, on the face
of it, they dont appear to have anything to do with each other.
Jesus told his disciples (us) we are to be in the world yet not of the world. Complicated?
I often use stories or symbols when I am explaining matters of faith to people. Being in
the world yet not of the world can be demonstrated using water coloured with a little
food colouring (representing the people of God) and oil (representing the world). Pour
both into a jar and they will always separate out but shake it up a bit and they mix won-
derfully well! Left to stand, the oil and water will naturally separate out again but the oil
takes on colour from the water showing that when we go out and mix in the world we are
to have an effect on it. Being a Christian in the world by sharing Gods love and good-
ness with the world is the way we can all help bring a little colour and beauty to it.
The church is in the world. It may not be of the world but it is definitely in this world.
And this world is a political world. Christians are both religious and political people.
We believe, teach and confess things about God and we participate in the world of gov-
ernment and politics.
Some may still say politics and religion dont mix but faith, I hope, influences every area
of my life otherwise its less important than my hobbies or indeed the weather and
that surely would be an insult to God. Archbishop Welby reminded all Christians before
the General Election that Religious belief is the well-spring for the virtues and practices
that make for good individuals, strong relationships and flourishing communities. The
Christian virtues of love, trust, justice and hope should guide our actions, as well as the
actions and policies of all those who seek to lead our country.
The world in which we live is complicated and there are no simple religious answers to
the problems we, as individuals or the world, face but as the Archbishop of Canterbury
reminded us we all have a duty to play our part. With Love, Revd Jane
