DR.

EVERTON ANTHONY GOODEN

Everton Anthony Gooden was born in Canada to Jamaican parents.

I fast forward his life to high school at George Harvey Collegiate on Keele St., in west Toronto.
He was considered a poor student until that day when he was hit with the reality, as an epiphany.
I imagine Everton saying something like, where am I going from here?; how can I find a good job
with these poor grades?; what kind of chances would I have in life as a young, black, and half-
educated man?; and my parents are going to kill me if I do not graduate! Everton became thirsty
and hungry for education he developed an insatiable appetite for learning. The change was
immediate and permanent. Perhaps he was motivated by the words of some of his teachers who
admonished him, to save him from wasting his time even thinking about a professional career, that
a professional career is not for everyone. Purposefully driven and armed with defiance, Everton
worked extremely hard and improved his grades each year through high school, university and
finally medical school. The Trade Winds were at his back. Everton just could not and would not
stop. The force that was driving him was far greater than he. Maybe it was mamas prayers.

The wind deposited Everton in an internship at a Toronto hospital. He was no less anhungered for
learning. This was his vision coming true right before his eyes his dreams unfolding, but the
pace was too slow for him. He saw an opening in a window curtain and pressed his face against
the glass as close as he could, in order to have the best picture and a window-side view of a
doctor performing a real surgical procedure. Wow. Awesome. But before he could really grasp
anything from this skilled performer, he was shooed away by him and was told never to do such
again. Oh. But there is no stopping a purpose-driven young man who has gone from poor student
to medical student. Everton Gooden had come too far for someone to try to deter him again. I
imagine that he extended his clavicles, cleared the lump from his pharynx, lifted his cranium, and
walked over to the best view between those same curtains. As lady luck would have it another
day, another doctor. This time, Heaven smiled on him and the head surgeon saw him and gave
him the royal escort to a table-side view of a real surgical procedure! I can visualize Everton
saying, from a window view to a table view, all the while wearing that big grin on his face.

I want to think that that table-side view was an initiation and anointing on Everton Gooden which
propelled him into the greatness he went on to accomplish. He was quoted as saying, It was
highly motivating. In 2001, Everton completed his training at the University of Toronto.
The thrill and motivation saw Mr. Gooden through to the specialty of Otolaryngology (the study
of diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and
neck). His name now reads:

Everton Anthony Gooden, MD, FRCSC

The titles of Medical Doctor and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada landed him
on the staff of North York General Hospital, fresh out of university in September, 2001. One
would think that Dr. Gooden would settle back and bask in his glorious accomplishments. Think
again. He went on to hold the following positions at North York General Hospital (NYGH):

2009 - Division Head, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery;

President, Medical Staff Association;
Board Member of the hospitals Board of Governors;
Board Member on the Medical Staff Association;
2014 - Chief of Staff; and
Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee.

This is Dr. Everton Anthony Gooden, MD, FRCSC, and North York General Hospital is his
affiliation. NYGH is the base for one of the biggest family and community medicine programs in
Canada and comprises over 380 family physicians in its affiliation. In general, there are over 800
credentialed physicians with North York General Hospital. NYGHs Surgery Program consists of
over 60 specialized physicians who perform more than 40,000 surgeries per year, one of whom is
Dr. Everton Anthony Gooden.

North York General Hospital is very proud of the effect of its philanthropic support. NYGHs
philanthropic Physicians Campaign was strongly supported by its team of doctors, and this was
an exhibition of their dedication to the excellent care that has always been provided by the hospital.
Phase I of this campaign exceeded the expectation of $1.4 million in funds donated by the doctors
and others in the community. Phase II was co-chaired by Dr. Gooden, and it also surpassed the
expectation. The doctors continue to give back to their hospital to the benefit of their patients.

North York General Hospital utilizes the funds raised through the Physicians Campaign to help
in all areas of practice, including tonsillectomies performed by Dr. Gooden and others. Dr. Gooden
also did a webinar called Paediatric Quality-Based Procedures (QBP): Tonsillectomy With and
Without Adenoidectomy, for the Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health, as Co-Chair
of the Tonsillectomy QBP Expert Panel. The following embedded chart is an excerpt from the
QBP overview, which documents paediatric tonsillectomies performed in Central Toronto
between 2007 and 2011:

Dr. Evertons exploits do not stop at North York General Hospital. He is also on the
Otolaryngology Health Care Team at Sunnybrook Hospital.

Someone who is very interested in learning can never take it all for him/herself. He/she has a heart
to share his/her hard-earned knowledge, and is always willing to mentor any and everyone who
wants to learn. That is why Dr. Everton Anthony Gooden is also an assistant professor of
Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, University of Toronto at North York General Hospital.
He also teamed up with the Sound Advice Hearing Clinic, Head and Neck Surgery Dept. This is
a privately owned clinic where Dr. Gooden shares his expertise and consulting services.

I truly feel spent chronicling all these exploits of Dr. Everton A. Gooden. Yet he seems to have
no boundaries. His personal practice is located at 685 Sheppard Avenue East, Suite 402 in North
York. With all this, one would expect less than perfect performance from such a busy doctor, but
on the contrary, Dr. Gooden has been receiving rave reviews for his work. The following are only
two of many 5-star reviews:

I have had thyroid surgery by Dr Gooden two times. The first

time he removed part of my thyroid and it cam[e] back as
cancer. I had to have a second surgery to remove the rest of the
gland. My whole experience was wonderful from the hospital
nurses and dr Gooden. His secretary ebony is amazing. Great
experience and I definitely highly recommend him

The other patient wrote:

last week removed part of my thyroid. He is very calm and puts

you at ease. Answered all my questions and was really patient.
His secretary Ebony is amazing too. Really good experience with
this doctor.

Dr. Everton Anthony Gooden remembers from where his journey began and how hard he had to
work to get to this destination. He commented that patients do a double-take when they learn that
this extremely talented doctor is a black guy. They are shocked, he said. Its not what they
expect. Im proud of that. It says, study hard and be good. You can make a difference by being
visible.

I know Dr. Gooden personally: he is my familys Otolaryngologist. In 2013, he performed a

tonsillectomy on my then 22-year-old daughter Princess. She had no complications, and we are
very pleased with the results. Princess concurs with all the favourable reviews.

I took this long, scenic route to say simply that when you go to North York General Hospital, you
are in excellent, capable, caring, hard-working, and empathetic hands.
