Fiskville

It has its own postcode; it had a state school; it

employed hundreds and now the CFA training campus
at Fiskville is in the process of being decommissioned.
The 300 acre institution suspended operations in 2015
after a cancer cluster was discovered among those who
lived and worked there since the 1970s. The site was
closed permanently not long after the suspension and
a parliamentary inquiry report was released.
The CFA said on Friday 7 July, through a media
release, the first major step would be the demolition of
the Practical Area Drill (PAD).
This work will include the removal of all training
props and other structures within the training area,
the statement read.
The former accommodation areas, Learning Centre
and other structures outside of the PAD are not
impacted by these works.
CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said it was a
requirement of the CFA to remediate the site.
While this was an emotional time for many, the
safety and wellbeing of our people and the broader
community is our first priority, he said.
The start of these works will be closure for some,
difficult for others, but hopefully we can all move
forward and focus on the future with new facilities
such as the new, and recently announced, Central
Highlands Training Campus.

Submissions are now open for
Moorabools premier business awards
and expressions of interest have
already started coming in.
The Ballan and District Chamber of
Commerce Business Excellence Awards
are open to businesses throughout
the shire, and submissions for the
categories opened last week.
Weve already received expressions of
interest on the website, from businesses
that will be submitting for the awards,
said Awards Committee Secretary
Angie Colliver.
And the time to start putting together
submissions is right now.
Have a look at the guidelines, and start
drafting your submission now; have a
look at the criteria, start talking to your
staff about it, and make everyone aware
that you are going to put a submission
in - there might be different people in
the business that look after different
parts of the submission, so you might
start to engage different staff in it as a
group.
Its a busy time now, but if you just
put aside a little bit of time each week
to get some submission things done, it
will come together.
Categories include - Hospitality,
Manufacturing, Home Based, Trade
Services, Local Producer, Retail,
Professional Services, Accommodation,
and the Business of the Year Excellence
Award.
Businesses make their own
submissions for the above awards,
and can also make submissions for
the following three awards but can
also be nominated for them as well
in the categories of Young Achiever,
Outstanding Tradie, and the Mayors
Award acknowledging an Outstanding

The Launch
There are great local businesses in the Ballan &
District Chamber of Commerce and according to
President Robert Eskdale the group is proud to
auspice this event once again.
Our businesses employ local people and the
Chamber has a few achievements under their belt
over the last couple of years.
The Farmers Market has been going now for five
years, the Community Bank since 2011, donating
almost $160,000 back into the community, and
more recently the Arboretum Group that is changing
Ballans streetscapes and improving our local
amenity whilst working with Council, he said.
Moorabool Mayor David Edwards attended the
launch of the Business Excellence Awards and
explained what that really meant.
Businesses are the backbone of society; they bring
people in when a town dies. Businesses open up
any town, which then will ignite.
I congratulate the Chamber for getting this
organised.
Cr Edwards spoke about diversity in the Moorabool
Shire from the Lal Lal falls, grazing and fertile lands
at Bungaree to sand quarries, a coal mine and the
market gardens in Bacchus Marsh.

Cars float like boats Fiskville

It can take as little as 15 centimetres of water for a vehicle to
start to float thats the size of an average pen.
The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) has launched
a campaign which brings to light the dangers of driving in
floodwater.
Acting Chief Officer Operations, Tim Wiebusch said the
campaign 15 to float came off the back of the increase in
flood fatalities associated with motor vehicles in recent years.
Over the past nine months, VICSES volunteers have
responded to over 100 requests for assistance related to
vehicles that have become stranded in water. In 2016, we
responded to 126 callouts regarding vehicles trapped in
floodwater and weve seen incidents already this year that
just shouldnt be occurring.
Vehicles that become stranded in water place our SES
volunteer crews and other responders at risk. Thats why we
are launching the 15 to float campaign, to highlight just how
easy it is for vehicles to become stranded in water.
Mr Wiebusch said in terms of natural hazards, floods were
the second highest cause of fatality in Australia, following
heatwaves.
We have long advocated that it is dangerous to drive
through water over the road, but many people wouldnt
realise just how little floodwater it takes for a car to lose
control.
Research conducted by University of New South Wales
discovered how small and large cars behave when they
encounter flash floods, replicating scenarios faced by many
stranded motorists.

Manhunt mayhem

A Melton man was pep-
per sprayed in the face and
hosed down with water fol-
lowing a dramatic police
chase, including the police
airwing, that ended in Shea
Street, Bacchus Marsh.
The 26-year-old was ar-
rested on the property on
Saturday (July 1) around 12
noon and charged with 22
offences including burglary,
theft, unlicensed driving,
evading police, dangerous
driving, possessing a drug
of dependence, assaulting
police, resisting police and
committing indictable of-
fences while on bail.
A 29-year-old Burnside
man was also arrested
and charged with similar
offences.

Police Rounds

A 24-year-old man was flown to hospital
with serious head injuries last night after
his vehicle flipped on its roof on the Western
Highway, near Pykes Creek reservoir.
Ambulance Victoria were called to the scene
at around 10pm. The St Albans man
was flown by air ambulance to the Alfred
Hospital in a stable condition.
A spokesperson for Victoria Police said the
man was the only occupant of the car, which
was travelling in the east bound lane near
Myrniong.
No other vehicles were involved. An
investigation continues.

Hamish Coulton pulled on a different

The young Bacchus Marsh talent was select-
ed in the final team of 22 that lined up against
its VAFA metro rivals at the Frankston Oval.
Coulton was one of four players in the Bal-
larat Football Netball League that took to the
field over three training sessions, and mak-
ing the final squad.
The squad was coached by Yarrawonga co-
coach Damien Sexton, who took the reins for
his ninth season.
Coulton said the selection was a relief.

A Bacchus Marsh woman found with more
than eight-grams of methamphetamine has
narrowly avoided jail time.
Emily Oakley was arrested on May 7 this
year, after she was pulled over by police for
driving a car with stolen registration plates.
During a search of the car, police found
a satchel containing 8.64 grams of
methamphetamine, $3150 cash, scales,
straws, syringes and four diazepam tablets.
Oakley told police the drugs were for her
own personal use, with a drug habit sparked
from a motorcycle accident that ended her
motocross career and left her unemployed.
The money, she said, was a collection of
Centrelink payments saved for a house she
planned to purchase.
Oakley pleaded guilty to trafficking
methamphetamine and a string of minor
offences in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates
Court on Friday (June 30).
She was assessed for a Community
Corrections Order.
The Bacchus Marsh court heard Collinson
had a long history of priors, beginning in
2014 with numerous drug, violence and
driving related matters. As punishment for
a number of those crimes he was required to
complete 50 hours unpaid community work,
of which he did zero.
The unlicensed driving charge occurred on
July 2 last year when police recognised
Collinson driving a car on Gisborne
Road. Police followed the accused to a
residence where the vehicle was found to be
unregistered, had false plates and Collinson
unlicensed.
During questioning Collinson told police he
was in fact eligible to apply for a license and
was looking to purchase the car, also stating
that theres no reason to do things like this
and that he was sorry.

had paid all fines he has received, stating
that if he hadnt it would have tipped [him]
over into a prison sentence.
Collinson received 150 hours of unpaid
community work to be completed over
12-months, with sporadic and random drug
tests to be taken during that time. He also
has an adjourned undertaking hearing for
this case on December 1, which Mr Saines
has requested be heard by himself.
If he (Collinson) steps out of line
again, on the first of December [he] will
face imprisonment, Magistrate Saines
concluded.

A photography exhibition showcasing
the work of Moorabool is set to cap off
the winter season.
The 2017 Photography Winter Salon
will be held at the Bacchus Marsh Arts
Council gallery between July 28 and
September 3.
A group of ten local photographers
have joined forces to exhibit a range
boxes and encaustic an alternative
technique that uses beeswax as a
medium.
Photographer, Katy Filonenko said
the exhibition was a fantastic way to
showcase the towns local talent.
This is the first time the gallery has
held a group photography exhibition;
we hope that it ties in well with the
Ballarat International Foto Biennale, as
available for viewing during gallery
hours.
The 2017 Photography Winter Salon
will kick off with an official opening
ceremony at 6pm on July 28.
The date of submissions of interest
has been extended to Monday July 17.
Work can be dropped off at the gallery
between July 23 and 27.

Read all about it - libraries in Moorabool are set to benefit
from more funding than ever before.
The state government last week announced that it will be
providing record funding for public libraries to buy books,
update computers, and deliver programs for school kids.
But as it turns out, Moorabool Shire Council is already on
the job.
Councils draft budget contains $371,631 for library services,
along with a new initiative to extend the library opening
hours at a further contribution from Council of $29,000,
which is also in the Draft Budget.
This state government funding is recurrent funding, with
Moorabool Shire Council to receive $250,590.
The Victorian Budget 2017/18 provided $42.5 million for the
Public Libraries Funding Program - a 2.5 per cent increase
from last year.
The funding comes on top of the $4.5 million Living
Libraries Infrastructure Program, which provides grants to
build, redevelop or refurbish libraries across the state.
On average, just under one in five Victorians visit their local
library.
We understand the importance of libraries to Victorians
and thats why were continuing to support them with record
funding, said Minister for Local Government Natalie
Hutchins.

a hessian bag or an old blanket, he said.
The important thing is to ensure the meter is fully covered
to trap the warmer air inside.
Mr Holt said the residents should also ensure that the cover
is easily removable for meter reading and maintenance.
Frozen pipes can also be an issue if the weather is very
cold. To stop pipes from freezing, first ensure they are clean
and not leaking, then wrap in insulation material, available
from hardware shops.

older Victorians still resid-

More importantly, there is
no evidence to suggest four-
sided isolation barriers will
reduce toddler drownings
in backyard pools. Accord-
ing to Coroner reports more
than 20 Victorian toddlers
have drowned in backyard
swimming pools and spas
since 2000. An even greater
number of toddlers have suf-
fered near-fatal incidents.
The proposal also ignores
the advice of numerous in-
dustry experts including
Life Saving Victoria, SPASA,
the REIV and Kidsafe -
which have urged Govern-
ment to introduce manda-
tory barrier inspections for
all residential properties
with a pool or spa. The REIV
has also called for safety cer-
tificates at the point of sale or
lease.
Legislated in Western Aus-
tralia since 1992, mandatory
barrier inspections have re-
duced toddler and infant
drownings in that state by
more than 80 per cent. More
recently both Queensland
and New South Wales have
also introduced mandatory
barrier inspections.
Given other relevant leg-
islation the Sale of Land
Act 1952 and the Residential
Tenancies Act 1997 is also
being reviewed for the first
time in decades, the REIV is
calling on the Andrews Gov-
ernment to introduce proven
legislation which will de-
liver greater protection for
Victorian toddlers.
