Reinterpreting the past legacy and addressing the transformations. Case: Thrissur
The city is an expression of human culture and tradition. Right from the Indus valley civilization a city
was born with careful planning, urban form and architecture respecting the natural setting. The basic
phenomenon of migration of population to safer riverine hinterlands forms the most primitive type of
urbanization giving rise to most rudimentary urban centres. (Thaper 1984). These urban centers
developed to towns and cities and forms a narrative. A narrative of various experiences, associations
and revelation of the place. It is a large outdoor room with myriad activities and forms a backdrop of our
day to day life. But the soul of a city lies in its genesis; the history and the legacy it curtails. The history
reveals the distinctive character of the city to a unique entity; a whole of multitude dimensions spread
across socio cultural economic, political and physical manifestation of human life. The overall structuring
of the city, its active public realms, streets, markets etc forms the parts of this whole and renders an
association and image in the visitors mind.
But cities are dynamic in nature; they are in constant evolution and where the main changes in our
society take place. Economic, social and cultural progress today takes place in large cities and relates
directly to the modification of the physical space involved and the living conditions of the people. The
consequences of the process of transformation often differ in the various parts of a city.
Thus the city forms an IRREDUCIBLE PLURAL TEXT (Prof. P.V K Rameshwar, Cept University, Ahmedabad)
At present the cities and towns have become more and more complex and heterogeneous with rapid
changes and demands of growth; the city has been increasingly under pressure. The profession of
planning and the act of individual building; architecture lacks the cohesive character of urban form and
space that existed before. We tend to forget its legacy and values in this era of globalization. Urban
design can address these concerns and can offer appropriate way outs.
The main objective of this studio is to broaden up the vision of architecture; reading the various
parts/components of a city and understanding the city as a macrocosm of these parts making a unified
whole. To impart knowledge and understanding of urban design concepts and the methodology for
arriving at urban design solutions and formulating policies and guidelines.
