Practice Assignment: Breadboards and Multimeters II

This worksheet is due by the deadline posted on blackboard. This is an individual submission. Remember
that this worksheet gives you the skills to demonstrate competencies in two quizzes: Multimeter Skill and
Electrical Concept Application.
Turn the page over to find a pictorial representation of a series and a parallel circuit.

1. Build a series circuit with two resistors (both 220 Ohms) and an LED. Draw your circuit (you can hand
draw, scan and attach the image in your submission document).

2. Measure the voltage across each of the components in the circuit above (Include the units):

Arduino 5V-Ground ________

220 Ohm Resistor 1 ________
220 Ohm resistor 2 ________
LED ________
Do the voltages add up? (Arduino supply voltage = Voltage across Resistor 1 + Voltage across resistor 2 +
Voltage across LED).

3. Measure the current through the circuit. (include units):

4. Can you build the following circuit with a 220 Ohm resistor and explain the outcome? (LEDs lit or not lit
and why)

5. A. Build a parallel circuit with two resistors (use one 1kOhm and one 220 Ohm resistor) and two LEDs.
(One resistor and one LED in each parallel branch). Draw your circuit (you can hand draw, scan and attach
the image in your submission document).

B. Based on the circuit above what can you comment on the relationship between current through the LED
and brightness of the LED.

6. Measure the voltage across each of the components (Arduino 5V-Ground, resistors, LEDs). Do the voltages
in each parallel branch add up to 5V?

Between Arduino pins 5V and GND ________

Across 220 Ohm Resistor ________
Across 1 kOhm resistor ________
Across LED ________

7. Measure the current flowing into the circuit from the arduino 5V pin. Measure the current in each parallel
branch. Do these add up? (Current flowing from 5V pin in Arduino = current in branch 1 + current in branch
2)

8. In the circuit diagram drawn in Q5 show the voltage across each component and the currents in each branch.
Make sure to include units.
