COMMANDING GENERAL
10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION (LIGHT INFANTRY)
FORT DRUM, NEW YORK 13602-5007
July 10, 2017
To the Soldiers, Families and Civilians of Fort Drum,
On Sunday evening our North Country community suffered a devastating loss, with
the deaths of a young military spouse, Nichole Walters, and New York State Trooper
Joel Davis.
A Soldier from 1st Brigade Combat Team, SSG Justin Walters, has been charged
with taking their lives. Army Criminal Investigation Command is participating with local
authorities in the on-going investigation.
Over the next couple of days | suspect there will be a lot of conversation in the media
and in our homes about the circumstances surrounding this incredible tragedy. It’s
important to me that you know there are services on post to help you, or your Family, if
this situation is overwhelming you. Please reach out to your unit Chaplain, behavioral
health specialist or chain of command if you need assistance. There is no shame in
seeking help, please do not shoulder the weight of grief on your own.
Please join me in remembering a member of our Fort Drum Family, and the New
York State Trooper who sacrificed himself in an effort to come to her aid, as we hold
their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.
