Alvin Bremseth Family

Alvin Bremseth was the seventh child born to Beret and Arndt Bremseth. He was born on a farm near
Mabel, Minnesota on February 28, 1892. We have no record of his early childhood days; however,
judging from his love for baseball and fishing in his later years, we feel confident that these activities
filled many of his leisure hours.

July, 1919 he married Stella Larson at Harmony, MN. Farming was his occupation. He worked hard,
especially during the depression years, having various outside jobs to keep his family fed. One job was a
milk pickup covering many miles around Highland with sleigh and horses. Children were plentiful. The
first 9 children were all born on various farms in the Preble, Carlton and Amherst Township areas. They
then moved to the home farm where the next five children were born. For four years they farmed a
neighboring farm where Rebecca was born. After the death of his mother, they bought the home farm.

Alvin was active in his civic obligations, serving both on the School Board and the Amherst Township
board. He had his convictions and often found himself in conflict with opposition. He was a member of
the Elstad Lutheran Church most of his life. He was however baptized at the Garness Church. He was a
janitor for some time at the Elstad Church, and of course the janitor was also in charge of ringing the
church bell every Sunday, so we always had to be to church on time.

In the early 1950s his health was giving him problems. He had double hernia surgery and cancer was
detected in his colon. After a few months the colon was removed. After months of illness, to his delight,
healing came and the lord was greatly praised. In January 1960 he suffered a massive cerebral
hemorrhage and died three days later on January 16th. He was laid to rest tin the Elstad Church
Cemetery. Even though 30 years have passed, he has remained a dominant person in our familys
collective memory.

He loved to travel and they made a trip to the Black Hills with his sister Lydie and her husband Clifford.
This he talked about often. A real thrill was when they went to see a Milwaukee Braves baseball game in
Milwaukee, WI with Judy and Chuck.

Farm work in those days was done with horses and milking was done by hand. He bought his first tractor
from his brother Casper and was he prod of it! At the end of the day he would often walk through the
fields checking the crops and later would sit on the front porch smoking his pipe. It was the time of the
day that the family would spend together in conversation and relaxation. He loved family gatherings at
Christmas and other times, especially the old time music and dancing. A good game of 42 (Dominos)
Rook or a good argument, usually politics, where always lively when he was involved. He plays a mean
game of marbles. He loved competitive sports. His friends were many and enemies, to our knowledge,
non-existent. He would always remember the children at home when he took the horse and wagon to
town for groceries by buying a supply of candy peppermints, peanuts, chocolate covered peanuts etc.
It took quite a while to make the trip however and we children barely would get a taste. His love for his
family allowed us to always forgive him and hope for better luck next time. He always managed to
anger us and make us laugh at the same time.
He was up early to fire up the stove, etc. and would call the boys to get up and help with chores. He was
often answered with the tap of shoes on the floor to indicate they were rising. It was obvious to him that
he was getting only false action and would have to start up the stairs and they would climb out the
window and be on their way to the barn when he arrived at the top of the stairs. He and Stella spent
many hours at auctions always bringing home boxes of treasures. He assisted in home parenting in
various ways from doing much of the disciplining to hair cutting and bread making.

Alvin was interested in people and no one ever escaped a family history inquiry until he was satisfied. He
was also a very good listener.

Lastly, he loved children, especially his grandchildren and his grandchildren knew it. God Bless his
memory among us.
