1.To the west of the vast continent of Asia,

in the charming land Europe is situatecl Italy,
the source of countless virtues, the land of riches
and prosperity, the home of the learned and the
wealthy, the resort of merchants and traders from
distant parts of the globe, a country peerless
among all other countries. Its wonderful works of

the olden'days are yet fresh in the memory of man.
2.The northern boundary of this pleasantland

is protected by the mighty Alps with its lofty peaks,

6. In the olden days, this country, (Italy) was

adornedby peopleof the great. Aryan race reuowned
for their boundless prowess, men who had churned
the unfathomable depths of the ocean of Literature,
Sciences and Arts, and who, having drunk deep of
the nectar of knowledge won by them, forgot, in
their transport, all the cares and sorrows of this
world. They were like unto suns amid the cim-
merian darkness of ignorance, and were famous,
like Brihaspati, the chief preceptor of the gods,

in learning and wisdom.
7. The far-famed capital of Italy was Rome,

which surpassed the abode of the gods in eternal
prosperity, which was once the cradle of heroes,
where abounded mines of various precious gems,
which was illumined by countless virtuous deeds,
and at whose feet the nations of the eart once
bent their haughty brows, in fear of her mighty
legions and her thunderlike weapons of war.
