TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF OFC AND ACCESSORIES

1.0 FIBER OPTIC CABLE SPECIFICATIONS

1.1 The Fiber Optic Cable shall, as a minimum requirement, meet the ITU-T
recommendations G-655 characteristics of 9.5/125-micrometer single mode optical
fiber cables.

1.2 All fibers shall be colored, single mode, double window (1300/1550nm) composite
design with step index suitable for DWDM.

1.3 The Fiber Optic Cable shall be suitable for direct burial in the ground.

1.4 Physical make up of the supplied fiber optical cables shall include single mode fibers
with composite coating on each fiber, loose tube configuration, color coded buffer
tubes, a non-metallic central strength member, filled core, a polyethylene inner
jacket, corrugated steel tape armor and a protective outer jacket.

1.5 Physical make up of the supplied fiber optical cable shall include but not limited to
the following:

1.5.1 loose tube configuration with the following specifications:

1.5.1.1 Shall be made of hard abrasion resistant compound.


1.5.1.2 Shall provide mechanical and environmental protection of the
optical fibers.
1.5.1.3 Shall be appropriate quantity to accommodate optical fiber
requirements
1.5.1.4 Shall be individually color-coded.
1.5.1.5 SZ-stranded.
1.5.2 Outer jacket shall be resistant to crude oil, petrochemicals and its
derivatives and be carbon black in color for protection against ultraviolet
radiation.

1.5.3 Single mode fibers with composite coating on each fiber

1.5.4 Color coded buffer tubes

1.5.5 The central strength member shall be KEVLAR with polyethylene


overcoat, or dielectric glass fiber reinforced plastic.

1.5.6 filled core.

1.5.7 polyethylene inner jacket


1.5.8 Over the inner jacket a corrugated steel tape armoring with polymer
coating shall be provided.

1.5.9 Reinforced with armored yarn for tensile strength.

1.5.10 Water-blocking compound shall be provided within the interstices of the


grooves. The compound shall be non-conducting, non-toxic, non-nutrient
to fungus and rodents resistant.

1.5.11 extruded aluminum shield.

1.5.12 Optical Fiber Characteristics:


1.5.12.1 Type of Fiber: Made of single mode, high-grade
silica glass; Cores doped with germanium and
covered individually and tightly with UV
acryl ate. The interstices in the cable core shall
be filled with jelly compound for moisture
protection.

1.5.12.2 Size of Fiber: 9.5/125 micrometer (9.5 +/- 10 %


micrometer /125 +/- 10 % micrometer).

1.5.12.3 Operating wave length: 1300/1500 nm (double


window).
1.5.12.4 Attenuation at 1310 nm: Less than 0.36 dB/Km
maximum.
1.5.12.5 Attenuation at 1550 nm: Less than 0.22 dB/Km
maximum.
1.5.12.6 Max. Dispersion loss over the range: Less than
3.5 ps/(nm x km) at 1310 nm and less than 18
ps/(nm x km) at 1550 nm.
1.5.12.7 Cut off wavelength: 1100nm - 1330nm.

1.5.12.8 Fiber mode diameter: 9.5 +/- 10 % micrometers.

1.5.12.9 Fiber outer diameter: 125 +/- 3% micrometers.

1.5.12.10 Fiber protective coating diameter: 250


1.5.12.11 micrometer with minimum coating thickness of
40 micrometer.
1.5.12.12 Optical bandwidth of fibers: 1.2 GHz/km
minimum.
1.5.12.13 Each fiber to be individually color coded.
1.5.12.14 No. of Fibers/cable : 48.

1.5.12.15 No. of tubes: 6.

1.5.12.16 No. of Fibers/tube : 8.

1.6 MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS

1.6.1.1.1 The cable shall be capable of withstanding a pulling load


(tension) of at least up to 2500 Newtons upon and after
installation.

1.6.1.1.2 The allowable bending radius for the cable shall be 10 times
the outer diameter

1.6.1.1.3 The cable shall have a minimum resistance of 344 lb/sq. inch.
(600 New tons/sq. cm.) against any crushing load.

1.6.1.1.4 The operating temperature range shall be -10 C to 60 C.

1.7 CABLE REELS

1.7.1 The fiber optic cable to be supplied by Contractor shall be coiled on


cable reels of minimum 1 Kilometer lengths. Each cable end shall be
secured in order to withstand all conditions of transportation. Any
damage during transportation due to poor packing will be sole
responsibility of Contractor.

1.7.2 The cable shall be delivered on a reel with both ends accessible for
testing purposes. Testing of the cable shall be possible without the need
to unwind more than 2 meters of cable. The cable ends shall be suitably
sealed to avoid the ingress of moisture. Also the cable ends shall be
secured to avoid any damages to fibers.

1.7.3 Both flanges of each cable reel shall be distinctly marked the following.

1.7.3.1 Manufacturer's name and country of origin with detailed


address.

1.7.3.2 Purchase order number with date of placement of order.

1.7.3.3 A short description of the cable stating the type and the
number of fibers.

1.7.3.4 The cable length in meters.


1.7.3.5 A unique drum identification number.

1.7.3.6 The weight of the drum both net and gross.

1.7.4 At the time of inspection in Contractor's storage area, if any cable reel of
cable is found or is suspected to be damaged in any way, Contractor in
the presence of the Company shall test the entire length of the cable on
the reel. If the test results are not satisfactory, the entire length of the
cable shall be rejected. No visible defect on the cable sheath shall be
permitted.

1.8 Optical Distribution Frame (ODF) and Patch Cords

1.8.1 ODF is installed between optical line terminating equipment and the
optical fiber cable. It shall provide SC-SC 48 port Optical adapters for
connecting pigtail fiber cords from the optical fiber cable and fiber patch
cords from the optical equipment.
1.8.2 All optical fibers of the cable shall terminate to the optical bulkhead
adaptors via the single mode optical fiber pigtail assemblies. The optical
fibers shall be spliced to the single mode optical fiber assemblies within
the terminal joint box.

1.8.3 ODF Rack supplied shall be 19 inch type conforming to latest ITU
CEPT and ETSI standards. Each rack shall be capable of housing the
required number of fiber termination and distribution panels.

1.8.4 The capacity of the ODF at each location shall be suitable to terminate
fiber optic cables with SC connectors for all location unless instructed
by the company.

1.8.5 In all the locations ODF shall be installed in a 19 rack to be supplied by


Contractor.

1.8.6 Offered racks at each location shall accommodate the following

1.8.6.1 Optical bulkhead adapters for single mode optical fiber

1.8.6.2 Corresponding single mode optical fiber pigtail assemblies


with SC type optical connectors to mate with optical
bulkhead adapters.

1.8.6.3 Sufficient tray areas for excess optical fiber storage with
provision to assure that the optical fiber do not exceed
50mm bend radius.
1.8.6.4 Designation strips for identification of the optical bulkhead
adapters.
1.8.6.5 Splice drawer consisting of 3 Nos. of splice trays, each
splice tray shall accommodate a minimum of 12 Nos. of
fusion splices or it shall accommodate all the available
fibers.

1.8.6.6 Splice drawer to allow for storage of excess lengths of


pigtail assemblies and buffer tubes/optical fibers of the
fiber cable.

1.8.6.7 Labeling for each fiber.


1.8.6.8 Protective covering and coating shall be applied to all
splices.

1.8.6.9 The ODF shall have enough space between the connectors
to easily plug/unplug the fiber patch cords.
1.8.7 Cable clamps are to be provided to secure fiber optic cable to the
chassis.

1.9 Installation Verification Tests:

1.9.1 Installation Verification Tests : Fiber Optic Cable Tests

1.9.1.1 Tests on fiber optic cable tests shall be performed both before
and after installation in accordance with the Companys
testing requirements.

1.9.1.2 Before installation and with the cable still on the reel the
cable shall be inspected to ensure the following:

1.9.1.2.1 That the exterior of the cable is free from nicks,


gouges and damage in so far as the cable can be
inspected.

1.9.1.2.2 That the cable is of the type and configuration


specified.

1.9.1.2.3 That the cable reel has the correct identification


number and is of the correct length as to ensure
that any splices can appear in the designated
places.
1.9.1.2.4 That the overall attenuation does not exceed the
Technical Specification limit.

1.9.1.3 After installation an inspection shall be carried out to ensure


that:

1.9.1.3.1 Cable of the correct size and type has been


installed.
1.9.1.3.2 The cable is properly installed and supported in
the correct location and that adequate slack has
been provided to prevent strain in the
terminations.
1.9.1.3.3 The cable has been correctly identified and
tagged.
1.9.1.3.4 The overall attenuation does not exceed the pre-
installation measured value.
1.9.1.3.5 Attenuation of each installed length through each
splice does not exceed the specified allowances.
1.9.1.3.6 Attenuation for each line i.e. end to end in both
directions does not exceed the specified
allowance.

1.9.1.3.7 The Maximum allowable loss through any splice


does not exceed 0.1 dB.
1.9.1.3.8 OTDR trace shall be carried out on each fiber and
the printed copy of the trace shall be provided in
the As Built Documentation. The OTDR Test
will be carried out using 1300 nm and 1500 nm.
