3. Asian Development Bank Report
4. Pakistans Planning Commission Report

Pakistan is a rich country in terms of natural resources which includes energy

resources (like coal and gas), minerals and agriculture. In spite of these vital
resources, we are still lacking behind. Those countries that got freedom after
1947 are included in the developing or developed countries like China and
Bangladesh, but we are still to register ourselves in that list. The main cause of
this is poverty which is the root cause of many problems. The government has always
strained to give a high priority to social welfare and providing basic facilities to the poor

Poverty has been one of the biggest problems that Pakistan faces today. It is rightly said
that poverty anywhere is a threat to prosperity everywhere. Nearly 60 per cent of the
Four out of 10 Pakistanis are living in
population of Pakistan lives in villages
acute poverty with the population of Balochistan faring the worst
among the provinces, according to Pakistans first-ever official report
on multidimensional poverty. Currently 60 million Pakistanis are living
below the poverty line,
. The successive governments have always claimed that Pakistan is essentially a welfare State. This
commitment has been reflected in different development plans. The Constitution of the country has
assigned a special importance to promoting general welfare of the people with a focus on alleviation of
poverty but unluckily Every government who take over the leadership of this country
have taken some effective actions but due to the loopholes in ineffective
policies, new construction projects and bureaucracy, the progress of poverty
alleviation has been disturbed severely. Despite these issues, Pakistan has made
notable advancement in dipping poverty. In recent previous years, governments
have launched different schemes for the betterment of the common people like
Benazir Income Support Programme, Tamer-e-Watan Programme, Pakistan Bait-
ul-Maal and welfares also are taking part to decrease the poverty in Pakistan

Causes
A number of factors explain the existence of and increase in poverty in the last decade. However, poor
governance is the key underlying cause of poverty in Pakistan

With regard to economic factors, decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate is the
immediate cause of the increase in poverty over the last decade.

Overpopulation illiteracy unequal distribution of resources corruption poor law and order
are chief causes of this poverty

currently Pakistan has prepared a Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper

(PRSP) that proposes to link poverty alleviation to the provision of
education, health, nutrition and empowerment of women as well as to
ownership of assets in rural areas. Additional financial resources are
being earmarked and the implementation mechanism for the poverty
alleviation programme is also being put in place. The Governments
economic revival plan includes a programme of special schemes of
small public works in most poor urban and rural areas, a programme of
food supplement scheme and the establishment of a micro-credit bank.
In the past, many such schemes were developed, but due to lack of
institutional mechanisms to implement and monitor the programme,
the number of people in poverty kept on increasing.
Challenges to Education
Pakistan is a diverse economy that includes agriculture, chemical, food processing and other industries.
During the last two decades, Pakistans economy has suffered due to international political disputes, a
fast growing population, high inflation rate, mixed levels of foreign investment, confrontation with
neighboring country like India etc. Poor saving rates, low exports, inadequate investment in socio-
economic infrastructure etc accounts for the fall in growth rates

Poor Governance in Pakistan had created uncertainty and lack of transparency in Government policies
resulting into loss of time and money through government corruption which created an unfavorable
environment for private sector investment

Pakistan is worlds 6th largest country in terms of population and its

population is mostly
rural. The rural population of Pakistan is totally depending on agriculture. As
in most
cases where the canal system is lacking or on arid lands, the production of
food is limited
as agriculture is said to be subsistence and meager to provide extra costs
associated
to quality of life. The quality of life is the measure of development, the more
the
development, the better the quality of life. A better life means, better
education, health
and sanitation facilities and better future associated for young population.
The rural areas
are relatively poor with respect to urban areas
