TPACK/ SAMR ACTIVITY DESIGN

Your assignment is to design a lesson/activity that incorporates the elements of TPACK,
or SAMR, standards, and a focus on specific technology that will help the class in
meeting your teaching goals. (Here is a list of classroom tools if you need ideas).

** Refer to the grading rubric in the syllabus for assignment expectations. A complete
sentence is appropriate for short responses. A paragraph-length response is appropriate
for longer responses.

Your name:
Anna

Grade level for the activity:

The grade level for the activity will be for elementary students in Kindergarten.

Content area (math, ELA, science, etc):

The content area will be focused on Language Arts.

Integration model (TPACK or SAMR):

The integration model I will be using is the TPACK model as this helps the teacher (me)
use technology integration in the classroom.
http://www.tpack.org

Technologies integrated:
The technologies students will use for the activity are ipads. I chose to integrate this
lesson plan with ipads so students can use a free app called Popplet Lite.

Activity title: Map It Out

Class demographics (describe your students):

My students should have a basic understanding of the English language.

Activity overview (describe the activity):

My Map it Out activity will be about the basic understanding of brainstorming ideas for
writing while using the Popplet Lite ipad app. The Popplet App will allow students to
make their own brainstorming maps for future writing. This app allows visual learning via
visual representation. I feel that this helps students actually see what they may be
2

thinking.

Activity goal (describe what the activity will accomplish):

The main goals for the Map it Out activity is to help students organize their thoughts in
a systematic and visual way by actually mapping out thoughts to eventually write a short
story.

Standards covered (pick from State, CCSS, NGSS, etc):

http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/

Common Core Standards in Michigan for Kindergarten

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.6
With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish
writing, including in collaboration with peers.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked
events, tell about the events in the order in which

Procedure (describe the steps students will follow):

1. Students will get an ipad (provided by school) and the free Popplet Lite App.
2. I will explain what a concept map is and how it can be used to organize thoughts.
3. I will also explain the importance of organized thoughts for writing (in particular a short
story)
4. Students will then brainstorm their ideas and keep track of their thoughts via the
Popplet Lite app.
5. Students will then share their ideas with their classmates and the teacher.
6. If students want to change their ideas for their short story they can do so using the
Popplet Lite app.
7. Students will then present their final map with others.

Assessment (describe how you will assess student understanding):

Students will create a short story by using the map they created via Popplet Lite from the
activity Map It Out. This will help determine if the students learned from the concept
maps they created.

Personal reflection (discuss how the activity you designed covers TPACK/SAMR
principles):
The activity I designed, Map it Out, covers TPACK because it discusses content,
technology, and pedagogical insights. The content used is language arts. The Popplet
Lite app can be used for ipads. This app allows children to learn through technology. It
also gives the teacher (myself) to see how and what students are thinking by actually
creating visual maps on the Popplet Lite app.
