GENERAL APPEARANCE CRITERIA
COLOUR Light green leaves, with erect green veins and stem.
VISUAL
Flat glossy leaves; long erect, fleshy leaf stems, base cut cleanly, free from excess soil
APPEARANCE
SENSORY Crisp, fresh leaves with slightly bitter flavour; juicy stems; free from foreign odours and tastes.
SHAPE Oval leaves, with thin flat stems.
SIZE Minimum 400g net per bag.
MATURITY Firm erect foliage. Nil seed head development.
MAJOR DEFECTS
INSECTS With obvious live insects (e.g. aphids, slugs).
DISEASES With fungal or bacterial rots (e.g. bacterial or fungal leaf spot, powdery mildew, black rot).
With distorted appearance or yellow mottling (virus infection).
PHYSICAL / PEST With cuts, tears or holes affecting > 10% of bunch.
DAMAGE
With bruised stems or crushed leaves affecting > 10% of bunch.
PHYSIOLOGICAL With soft, wilted or yellowed appearance (dehydrated).
DISORDER
With brownish spotting or russeting of the leaves.
TEMPERATURE With discoloured, water soaked leaves (freezing injury).
INJURY
With bleached areas on leaves affecting > 10 sq cm (sunburn)

CONSIGNMENT CRITERIA
TOLERANCE PER Total minor defects (within allowance limit) to be < 2 defects per item Total minor defects (outside allowance limit)
CONSIGNMENT must not exceed 10% of consignment. Total major defects must not exceed 2 % of consignment. Combined Total not
to exceed 10%.
PACKAGING & Packaging as per Progressive requirements. Country of Origin must be identified. Labelling to identify grower or agents
LABELLING name/brand (plus growers name/code if via an agent), address, contents, grade/class, size and minimum net weight.
Prepacked product to identify a Packed On date on outer container and retail unit unless it is in a package that obscures
the nature or quality of the food. If the nature or quality of the food is obscured then a best before date with maximum 10
days from harvest is required.
TRANSPORT & Stacked to Ti Hi specifications onto a stabilised pallet that has been wrapped or strapped as per policy. Refrigerated
RECEIVAL van or truck with air bag suspension, unless otherwise approved. Pulp Temperature 4 10C during transport from the
CONDITIONS farm/orchard and at receipt into Countdown Produce DC. Must be received within 3 days of packing.
CHEMICAL & Imported and domestically produced food sold in New Zealand must comply with the New Zealand (MRL) Food
CONTAMINANT Standard. The standard recognises the Tans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement for food imported from Australia
RESIDUES and the role of Codex standard for imported foods in general. Complies with FSANZ Standard 1.4.1 and Schedule 19
Maximum levels of contaminants and natural toxicants.
Specifications reviewable: eg. to account for specific regional effects or adverse seasonal impacts on quality or early or late seasonal
variances as agreed with each state operation and communicated formally in writing by Progressive.

SENSORY Crisp, juicy stems; firm leaves; mildly peppery flavour; free from foreign odours or tastes.
SHAPE Approximately oval to round leaves with irregular edge on round stems.
SIZE Bagged hydroponically grown plant with a minimum 150 grams for the leafy portion.
MATURITY Young, tender shoots; leaves not fully purple coloured.
