trip around the world. He's hoping to set a new world record. He'll be the oldest man
to travel around the world.
How do you feel, Phil?
PHIL - I feel great. I'm excited about the trip.
REPORTER - How are you going to travel?
PHIL - International Airlines is sponsoring my trip. They're letting me fly free for this
month because, thanks to reporters like you, they're getting publicity in return.
REPORTER - What countries are you visiting on the trip?
PHIL - I'm stopping in Portugal where I hope to spend a day relaxing on the beach.
In Egypt I'm going to spend a day seeing the Egyptian pyramids. I'm stopping in
India where I hope to see the Taj Majal. In Thailand I'm going to spend some time in
Bangkok. I'm also stopping in Hawaii to spend a day surfing.
REPORTER - What?!
PHIL - Just kidding. I haven't been surfing since I was 70.
REPORTER - 70? Wow!
PHIL - The final stop is in Mexico where I hope to listen to some of that
wonderful Mariachi music before I fly home.
REPORTER - Wow! Won't you get tired?
PHIL - My doctor says that I'm in better shape than him. I swim every morning.
REPORTER - Well, good luck. Send me a postcard from one of your destinations.
PHIL - OK.

LUCY - Hi Carl. Yeah! It's great. It's a magnet school.
CARL - A magnet school? What's that?
LUCY - It's a special school that teaches different stuff, not just math, reading, and
boring things like that.
CARL - What does your school teach?
LUCY - My school is bilingual. I spend half the day with an English-speaking teacher and
half with a Spanish-speaking teacher. For example, this month I'm learning science and
math in English but social studies and art in Spanish. Next month I switch. I learn
science and math from the Spanish-speaking teacher and social studies and art from
the English-speaking teacher.
CARL - Wow! Isn't that confusing?
LUCY - No. I started in the school when I was in kindergarten. When I started I only
could speak English. Now I'm totally bilingual.
CARL - That's cool. I heard about a kid in another magnet school that specialized in
the arts. He had a lot of theater classes and art classes and stuff like that.
LUCY - Different magnet schools specialize in different things.

En preguntas se puede usar some- o any- pero es ms comn usar any-.

Doble Negativo
No se considera gramaticamente correcto usar un indefinido negativo con un verbo negativo
(aunque se oye en algunos dialectos). Se llama un doble-negativo (double-negative). Se puede
usar uno de los indefinidos negativos (no one, nobody, nothing, nowhere) o un verbo negativo
con any- (anyone, anybody, anything, anywhere).
I have nothing. = No tengo nada.

I don't have anything. = No tengo nada.
I don't have nothing. No es correcto.

El Pasado en Ingls
Las reglas de como formar el pasado en ingls son ms faciles que las del presente. Las reglas
son iguales para todos los sujetos (I, you, he, she, it, we, they). Se aade -ed al verbo en el
afirmativo y didn't en el negativo (una contraccin de "did" y "not"). Para formar una pregunta,
aade Did al principio de la oracin.
Affirmativo - He walked.
Negativo - He didn't walk.
Interrogativo - Did he walk?
Si el verbo ya termina con e, nada ms aada d.
practice - practiced
Si el verbo termina con un consonante y luego la y, cambie la y a i y luego aada -ed.
cry - cried
Si la palabra termina con consonante, vocal, consonante, y la ltima slaba es la fuerte,

duplique la ltima letra.

Usamos pronombres reflexivos cuando el sujeto y el objeto de la oracin son iguales.
He hurt himself. = l se lastim (a l mismo).

burned myself on the stove. = Me quem (a mi misma) en la estufa.

La "e" Muda
Cuando las ltimas tres letras de una palabra son una vocal, seguida de una
consonante, y al final la letra e, sta e no se pronuncia. Estas palabras se pronuncian
con el sonido de la vocal situada antes de la consonante. Esta vocal se pronuncia como
el nombre de su letra (A, E, I, O, U). Decimos que la vocal "dice su nombre."
cake - La vocal "a" se pronuncia como la letra A.

Comparativos en Ingls
Comparativos son adjetivos que se usan para comparar dos personas o cosas.
Chicago is smaller than New York.

Generalmente formamos el comparativo aadiendo -er al adjetivo.
small (pequeo) - smaller (ms pequeo)
-r
Si el adjetivo termina con e, nada ms aadimos r para formar el comparativo.
large - larger
y -> ier
Si la palabra termina con una consonante y luego y, cambiamos la y a i y luego aadimos -er.
easy - easier
Doble Consonante
Si una palabra termina con una consonante, una vocal, y luego otra consonante y la
slaba fuerte es la ltima, duplique la ltima letra antes de aadir -er.
big - bigger
"More" con Palabras Largas

Si la palabra es de dos slabas o ms (una palabra larga) y no termina con y, usamos la
palabra more, en vez de -er.

Superlativos en Ingls
Se usan los superlativos para indicar un extremo en un grupo de cosas.
Bob is the tallest student in the class.

Generalmente formamos el superlativo aadiendo el sufijo -est al adjetivo.

Consonante-Vocal-Consonante
Si un verbo termina en consonante-vocal-consonante y la ltima slaba de la palabra es la

fuerte, duplique la ltima letra antes de aadir un sufijo (un final) a la palabra (-ing o -ed).
begin - beginning
La palabra "begin" termina con consonante, vocal, consonante y la ltima slaba es la
fuerte (begin).
stop - stopping - stopped

La palabra "stop" termina con consonante, vocal, consonante, y es de una sola slaba (asi
que la ltima slaba es la fuerte).
open - opening - opened

La palabra "open" termina con consonante, vocal, consonante pero la ltima slaba no es la
fuerte (open). Por eso no se escribe con doble n.
La excepcin a esta regla es la letra w.
blow - blowing
Aunque la palabra "blow" (soplar) termina con consonante, vocal, consonante, no se
duplica la ltima letra porque termina con w.
* En Inglaterra (pero no en los Estados Unidos) se duplica la ltima l aun si la ltima slaba no es
la fuerte.

El Condicional en Ingls
En el condicional imaginamos que pasara bajo ciertas condiciones imaginarias.
If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.

Si tuviera yo mucho dinero, viajara por todo el mundo.
(No tengo mucho dinero pero estoy imaginando que hara si tuviera mucho.)
En oraciones condicionales, ponemos el verbo en el pasado en la parte de la oracin que

empieza con la palabra if (aunque no refiere al pasado). Si el verbo es negativo, usamos el
verbo auxiliar didn't igual como con verbos en el pasado. En la segunda parte de la oracin (la
parte sin la palabra if) usamos el verbo auxiliar would. Si la oracin es negativa, usamos
would not o la contraccin wouldn't.
If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.

If I had a lot of money, I wouldn't work.
Podemos poner la parte de la oracin que empieza con if primero o segundo, pero si lo ponemos
primero, tenemos que poner una coma despus de esa parte de la oracin.
If I had a lot of money, I wouldn't work.

I wouldn't work if I had a lot of money.
NOTA #1:
El verbo to be es un poco diferente en oraciones condicionales. Esto es un aspecto de gramtica
que est cambiando. Antes en los libros de gramtica decan que se tena que decir . . .
If I were rich, I would travel around the world.
En oraciones condicionales como sta, el verbo to be siempre tena que ser were, aun en la
primera y tercera persona singular (I, he, she, it). Antes se consideraba mala gramtica decir
was en este tipo de oracin. Esto est cambiando y ahora hasta en libros de gramtica ponen las
dos alternativas (was y were).
If I was rich, I would travel around the world.

If I were rich, I would travel around the world.
NOTA #2:
No olvide que could es el pasado del verbo auxiliar can. Usamos could en lugar de can
para indicar una situacin imaginaria.
If I could fly like a bird, I would sell my car.

Si pudiera volar como un pjaro, vendera mi carro.
Tambin podemos usar could en lugar de would en oraciones condicionales para significar
podra.
If I had wings, I could fly like a bird.

Si tuviera alas, podra volar como un pjaro.
Haciendo Especulaciones
Se pueden usar could, might, y may para hacer especulaciones
Who is that woman?
She could be a famous singer.

She might be a movie star.
She may be a fashion designer.
Para cambiarlos a negativo, aadimos not. Podemos hacer una contraccin con could
(couldn't), pero no con might ni may.
She couldn't be the president.

She might not be from this country.
She may not be from this planet.

JENNY - I saw a news report saying that scientists are working on building tiny
molecular-sized robots that will be able to do different things in the future. Its
called nanotechnology.
MOLLY - Really? What will they be able to do?
JENNY - They might be able to use them in medicine to diagnose diseases and even
fix problems inside the body.
MOLLY - A tiny robot that goes into my body?
JENNY - Yeah. Like a little mechanic. It could go into your body to detect disease before
you even know youre sick.
MOLLY - Wow! I saw something on TV that said that in the future we might all have
computer implants.
JENNY - Computer implants?
MOLLY - Yeah. You may not even need a computer to surf the internet in the future.
Your implant could convert digital information into signals that your brain could
understand.
JENNY - Wow! Id never have to study for a test again.
