Tyner for disparaging comments made to a Dutchess County Government employee that were inappropriate, dsrespectfuland hurtful. Lam certain youdid not wish to ake this action. While ths entire ordeal elilted many emotions, the one most palpable to me was sade Sadness because there vasa clear unwilingness to simply admit the comments were wrong. Sadness because there was:ne attempt to make amends. And, sadness that a choice was made to fan the flames ‘of eicocd rather than strive for civilty. simple apology would have made this resolution unnecessary. 'No one should ever fel stifled or prevented from speaking thelr mind and sharing thelr views. Bold, Impassoned speech must be protected, Differing views and robust debate should be welcomed. Having held publeoffiee since 1994, 1 know passion In our discourse Is necessary, and | weleome and admire those who eamesti and honesty seek to make a aference. Yet, in order to truly be heard, we must be wing to listen and seek always to treat each other with respect Individually and callectvely, we should admit when we have erred, apologize when we overstep and accept sincere remorse when is extended. Clty in our discourse is no weakness and to solve problems and mold consensus i should remain ahalmark of our service together. ‘oo often we complicate the value of basic human decency. Today It seems too many resort to shouting others down and dismissing those with whom they disagree. I’ not necessary or becoming for anyone — especially those in elected office ~and it sets a poor example.
