My favourite actor, Johnny Depp

By Darya
One of the actors who made the greatest impression on
me is Johnny Depp. I like his acting very much. All his
characters are bright individuals, and it seems to me
Johnny Depp plays them brilliantly.
Johnny Depp was born June 9, 1963 in Owensboro,
Kentucky. In his young years Johnny wanted to become
a musician. He even played in a band. But his musical
career was not as successful as his acting one. After
several small roles Depp landed his first legitimate film
role in the horror film Nightmare on Elm Street. The film
had a great success.
In 1990 Depp starred in the 50s-kitsch musical, Cry-Baby, which became a cult hit and
succeeded in changing his image. In the same year Depp exhibited his versatility as an actor
in the title role of Edward Scissorhands. Johnny Depp played many interesting roles but my
favourite character is Captain Jack Sparrow from the movie series Pirates of the Caribbean. In
2004 Depp earned an Academy Award nomination for his starring role as Captain Jack
Sparrow. Initially, Jack Sparrow was supposed to be a comic hero, an eternal loser who is
completely sure of his irresistibility. But in the preparatory process and during the work on the
films, Jacks character has changed. It happened thanks to Depp. He added to the image of
Jack some features characteristic of rock musicians of the late twentieth century. No one
knows if the real pirates behaved like this, but playing this role Depp took an example of a few
rock stars. Im alive! Im alive! is the line of one of the rock songs and motto of many rockers.
The same can be said about Jack Sparrow. To my mind, Johnny Depp is the most fascinating
actor today. I advise everybody who enjoys good acting to watch his films.

Read the text and questions below.

For each question, mark the correct letter A, B or C.

Street art:
Odeith, the Illusionist
Odeith, also known as The Illusionist,
has a technical ability above the vast
majority of 3D graffiti writers. He is a
professional muralist and tattooist,
himself heavily tattooed. People in his
neighbourhood of Damaia, Lisbon, will
gladly provide Odeith with paint for his
murals.

He says:
I started painting in 1995 and I havent stopped since. Most of my pieces in the beginning were
just bombing. In 1997 I started to paint big murals; every time I went to paint, I always wanted
to do it bigger and better. I was always focused on 3D pieces.
I never studied art formally I left school at the very young age of 15 and I worked in a
furniture factory. Most people think that Im one of those guys who studied art when they see
my work, but I guess life didnt want it to happen that way!
I wrote the Portuguese word for HATE in my first piece. After 8 years of writing, I wanted
something that sounded Portuguese; so, in Portuguese ODEIO-TE means I HATE YOU and
when you say Odeith it has the same sound.
When I started writing, I think there were only 5 to 6 graffiti writers in Portugal. I used to buy a
famous magazine called Hip-Hop Connection only because there were 2 to 3 graffiti pages in the
middle and it was good to see different graffiti from everywhere.
As the years passed, more graffiti writers travelled to Portugal. Every year brings a lot of
writers and now we have a big community of artists that open new doors. Our streets are nice
galleries to walk through!
Sometimes I say to kids, though, that if you want to do something really original, the best
way is to watch other artists work; if you watch others, your mind gets influenced.
I have been making tattoos for twelve years now but at the moment Im making a living from
my anamorphic pieces: sometimes I sell my soul and make some money with some pieces but
its better than working in a factory.
For years most of my paintings had a message to society because I thought I could change
the World. Now I dont care about it; I just want to change my life before the World changes
me.

SCRIPTS LISTENING TEST

Part 1
Steven Spielberg
Filmmaker, director and producer, Steven Allan Spielberg was born on December 18, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio. An amateur
filmmaker as a child, Steven Spielberg became one of the youngest television directors for Universal in the late 1960s. A
highly praised television film, Duel (1972), brought him the opportunity to direct for the cinema, and a string of hits have
made him the most commercially successful director of all time.
His films have explored primeval fears, as in Jaws, or expressed childlike wonder at the marvels of this world and
beyond, as in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET. Spielberg has also tackled literary adaptations, such as The
Color Purple and Empire of the Sun. He amazed audiences around the world with the adventures of his daredevil hero,
Indiana Jones and his imaginative fantasy in Peter Pan, Hook and Jurassic Park.
His impressive historical films, Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan, earned him Academy Awards for Best Director.
He also won the Academy Memorial Award in 1987.
Spielberg eventually formed his new studio and he directed many other films. War Horse was the one that won him his
most recent critical acclaim. The movie received six Academy Award nominations.
Married twice, Steven Spielberg has a son from his first marriage to actress Amy Irving. He has five children and two
stepchildren with current wife Kate Capshaw.

Part 2
Books or films: whats better?
I went to see Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The film was amazing seriously, it blew me away. It was so, so much
better than its prequel, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Lightning Thief, and stuck so much closer to the book
something that obviously made me exceptionally happy.
The people who worked on the film they got a lot of things right. They got the characters, the world, the creatures, the
feel all right. They changed the plot, of course, and missed various things out, adding others in their place. But this didnt
matter. Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters was absolutely stunning.
So, why am I so obsessed with the things they changed? Why am I so much more in love with the book than with the
film?
The same thing happened with The Hunger Games. They got almost everything exactly right, but it still it didnt have

16
the same feel to it. The suspense and emotion just didnt project from page to the screen.
Films they can do a lot of things. They can bring whole worlds to life before our eyes, make characters into living
people. They can have us on the edge of our seats as vicious battle scenes are fought right before us, have us sobbing
over a death, a heartbreak or smiling with joy. And yet
They just dont have the same inclusion that books have. Youre merely an observer: you arent feeling everything the
character feels, arent reading every single one of their innermost thoughts, all of their doubts and fears and hopes. Books?
Books let you feel everything, know everything and LIVE everything. With a book, you can be the hero or the villain. You can
be an alien, an angel, a god. You can be in love, you can hate, you can triumph, you can lose. You can be anything and
everything. There are no limits. No restrictions. Nothing is impossible.
Thats why books are always better.
